"Quitter le Japon fut pour moi un arrachement" ("Leaving Japan was a wrenching separation for me") she writes in Fear and Trembling. Nothomb moved often, and did not live in Europe until she was 17, when she moved to Brussels. There, she reportedly felt as much a stranger as everywhere else. She studied philology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. After some family tensions, she returned to Japan to work in a big Japanese company in Tokyo. Her experience of this time is told in Fear and Trembling. She has written a romanticized biography (Robert des noms propres) for the French female singer RoBERT in 2002 and during the period 2000-2002 she wrote the lyrics for nine tracks of the same artist. Many ideas inserted in her books come from the conversations she had with an Italian man, from late eighties and during the nineties. She used the French Minitel, while he used the Italian Videotel system, connected with the French one. They never met personally.

Im Rahmen meiner Autorinnenchallenge komme ich jetzt öfters in eine Enscheidungskrise und diesmal stellte sich beim Buchstaben N die Frage: Nothomb oder Niffenegger? Da mein Lesefreund Semion wahrscheinlich die Zwillinge von Highgate lesen wird, habe ich mich für die mir bisher noch nicht bekannte Autorin Nothomb entschieden, und ich bin positiv überrascht. Dies wird sicher nicht das letzte Buch bleiben, das ich von dieser Schriftstellerin lese.
Die Geschichte ist relativ simpel mit sehr wenigen Protagonisten strukturiert. Das pensionierte Ehepaar Hazel - Emile und Juliette - er war Lehrer für alte Sprachen - erfüllt sich endlich den Lebenstraum vom einsamen und einfachen Landleben. Abseits einer kleinen Ortschaft stehen zwei Häuser, die Zivilisation in Form eines Bauernladens ist leicht erreichbar, der noch unbekannte Nachbar ist praktischerweise auch gleich Arzt. Wie passend!
Der bereits in den Plot eingeführte Nachbar, Monsieur Palamede Bernadin, übt sich ab dem ersten Tag wie Sun-Tse in der Kunst des Psychokrieges. Jeden Tag kommt dieser Quälgeist um 4:00 Uhr Nachmittags vorbei, bleibt bis Punkt 6:00 Uhr, schweigt mürrisch und antwortet einsilbig wenn er was gefragt wird, bleibt aber hartnäckig im Wohnzimmer sitzen. Der gesamte Besuch ist eine einzige Qual und vergällt dem Ehepaar ihren Traum vom friedvollen Leben in der Idylle. Das Ehepaar Hazel hat auf Grund ihrer Erziehung zur Höflichkeit am Anfang wenig Instrumente, sich gegen das schlechte Benehmen des Invasoren in die häusliche Gemütlichkeit zu wehren. Aber nach und nach, gemäß der Kunst des Krieges beginnen die Hazels, Strategien als Gegenmaßnahmen zu entwickeln, die Palamede stets mit einer weiteren Eskalation beantwortet. Da hilft es aber auch nichts, einfach nicht zu öffnen, Monsigneur Bernadin poltert so laut an die Türe, dass er sie beinahe einschlägt, wenn Juliette Hazel krank ist, entblödet sich dieser übergriffige, unhöfliche Mensch doch tatsächlich nicht, im Schlafzimmer der Kranken aufzutauchen und sich hinzufläzen.
Die nächste Finte der Hazels ist, die Frau von Palamede miteinzuladen um etwas Schwung in die Konversation und die nachbarlichen Beziehungen zu bringen. Dieser Abend gerät zum absoluten Desaster:
"Eine Zyste, dieses Ding war eine Zyste! Eva war aus der Rippe Adams gemacht worden, und Madame Bernadin war sicherlich als Zyste im Bauch unseres Quälgeists herangewachsen. [...] Bernadette besaß keine Nase; zwei undeutlich erkennbare Löcher schienen der Atmung zu dienen. Zwei schmale Schlitze oberhalb davon öffneten sich vor den Augäppfeln, doch konnte man nicht mit Sicherheit sagen, ob diese Augen etwas sahen. Am meisten zu denken gab der Mund: man hätte meinen können, der eines Kraken. Ich fragte mich, ob diese Öffnung wohl Laute hervorbringen konnte."
Zug um Zug steigert sich dieser Kleinkrieg und nach einem Eklat, begeht Palamede Bernadin einen Selbstmordversuch., der von Emile Hazel vereitelt wird. Nun wird das Ehepaar noch weiter in den Strudel der Angelegenheiten der Nachbarn hineingezogen, denn die offensichtlich behinderte Nachbarin Bernadette benötigt Hilfe, solange ihr Mann im Krankenhaus weilt und irgendwie fühlt sich Emile immer mehr verantwortlich.
So geht die Story mit 2 Schauplätzen 4 Personen mit viel Action weiter, ein Psychokrieg der kleinen Nadelstiche. Kennt Ihr den Film "Das Duell" von Stephen Spielberg genauso ist die Stimmung und der Plot - sehr minimalistisch inszeniert - aber es tut sich wahnsinnig viel von der tiefenpsychologischen Seite her.
Das Ende des Romans ist sowohl total moralisch verwerflich als auch atemberaubend, da ich zugeben muss, meine moralischen Skrupel ein bisschen über Bord geworfen zu haben und die schändliche Tat beginne, ein klein wenig zu rechtfertigen - beziehungsweise kann ich sie ein bisschen nachvollziehen.
Fazit: Für Fans der vielen Personen, des Gewusels und der Action in Romanen vielleicht ein bisschen zu minimalistisch, für mich aber absolut lesenswert und psychologisch köstlich! Definitv nicht die letzte Nothomb - Tipps von Euch diesbezüglich sind mir herzlich willkommen.

This is the 8th novel of Nothomb's I've read. While I always enjoy her works, some are obviously more entertaining/impressive to me than others. That being said, I LOVED this one. I've typically enjoyed her semi-autobiographical works more than just her stories, but this was definitely an exception. The story was amazing. It was short (like everything I've read by her) with very little background, consisting mainly of dialogue between a husband and wife, but I couldn't wait to finish it. Her descriptions, as always, range from profound to comical in this simple story. The basic premise is that we can never really know ourselves, and for anyone like me that's ever ruminated on the subject, it definitely rings true. It only consists of 4 main characters, but each of them comes to life through her writing, all of them completely engrossing in their own way. The only way I could've liked this book more is if it was slightly longer, as I enjoyed it so much and read through the entirety of it so quickly. I can't wait to get my hands on more of her writing!

Ma quanto mi lasciano spiazzata i libri di questa donna!
A cominciare dal narratore, che è molto strano, eh, lui con la sua Juliette e il loro rapporto matrimoniale che dura in pratica da quando avevano sei anni. Ed è morboso, proprio morboso, con la sua voglia di ritirarsi in campagna e vivere isolati da tutto e da tutti, come fine ultimo della loro vita (o forse solo della sua, chissà se Juliette è davvero d'accordo...)
E il suo vicino, che risulta strano a lui - che è già strano di suo - e invadente da non crederci, al limite dello stalking. E poi chissà perché, i personaggi negativi di Amélie sono sempre obesi da fare schifo. E senza possibilità di riparazione. Sono grossi e cattivi; ingrassano per la loro stessa cattiveria. Non c'è giustificazione che tenga per la loro obesità. Anche se poi la povera Bernadette non è così cattiva come il marito... o no?!

Si les 50 premières pages sont très bien écrites et prenantes, toutes les suivantes sont ponctuées d'une grossophobie si infâme qu'il en devient difficile de finir le livre… Si Mme. Nothomb avait un souci de grossophobie intériorisé si violent, elle aurait pû en parler à un thérapeute plutôt que d'en faire un énième livre. Immense déception pour cette nouvelle qui avait du potentiel. Je ne l'ai terminée que parce que je tenais à connaître le plot-twist final, qui s'est avéré être lui aussi vulgairement orchestré et posé comme un cheveu sur la soupe (c'est le cas de le dire lol). Il est bien dommage de constater que décrire avec une telle véhémence sa haine des personnes grosses et de leurs corps fasse tant de succès auprès des boomeurs.

In The Stranger Next Door by Amélie Nothomb, childhood sweethearts, Emile and Juliette Hazel, married for 43 years, decide to abandon city life for an idyllic retirement in the country. They have a burning need for solitude, to become true free spirits liberated from "what men have made of life." And so, in true fairy tale fashion, they buy a cottage in the woods, a house covered in blue wisteria set near a river, and get ready to begin their golden years in peace and tranquility.
But then comes a knock at the door.
Soon their Garden-of-Eden getaway is interrupted by a visit from their neighbor, Palamedes Bernardin. At first, Emile and Juliette are delighted. Mr. Bernardin is a retired cardiologist (how convenient to have a doctor living so close!). Better yet, he isn't a nosy chatterbox, as they feared. But the man's behavior quickly takes a turn: first just odd and then boorishly weird. The Hazels are baffled though still amused after this first fairly innocuous visit. He stays exactly two hours and leaves without ceremony. Emile and Juliette laugh it off—easy cruelties: their neighbor is large and portly, and has the personality of a sack of boulders. But as Mr. Bernardin visits the next day, and the day after that, in succession, when it looks like the visits will never cease, a low-grade paranoia and anxiety begins to settle on them.
By the middle act, we meet Mr. Bernardin's wife, Bernadette. In an effort to fill the void of a conversation, Emile blurts out an absurd dinner invitation. He is morbidly curious. He wants to know who would marry such a man. When they meet Bernadette, Emile and Juliette are shocked. Nothomb's descriptions of Bernadette are grotesque: "a protuberance," a "cyst" who shakes hands with a "tentacle," has a mouth "like that of an octopus" and speaks in indecipherable grunts. She repulses the couple but also elicits their pity and sympathy. Juliette eventually makes it a personal crusade to 'save' Bernadette from what she sees as Mr. Bernardin's cruelties and oppressions.
The book darkens in tone with every turn of the page, like a stain that deepens on white carpet. The Hazels' sense of social obligation prevents them from saying what they mean. Soon their need to understand their neighbor, to understand why he acts the way he does, to ascribe some logical motive to his actions—gets turned inward. The inscrutable Mr. Bernardin becomes a psychological foil to Emile's own buried anxieties and fears. In fact, it reminded me of a psychiatrist and patient relationship, albeit inverted and corrupted. Emile is enraged by the intrusions, which evolve slowly in the book from being a nuisance to daily tortures. He can't sleep at night. He starts to babble and drone, just to fill the silences. He becomes so obsessed with the visits he is helpless to prevent them. "I hadn't realized that I was a coward," Emile muses. With wicked glee, Nothomb inserts small pinpricks into her characters. Nothing you can see or feel at first, but eventually it does serious damage.
The Stranger Next Door is a dark, absurdist comedy with existential edges that only novelists writing in French seem capable of pulling off. It is also a novel about change and transformation: in this case, Emile's mental descent (or ascent, if you're really cynical...). Nothomb captures this idea well when Emile starts musing about good and evil as different states of matter:
How are gases different from other states of matter? Well, gases expand; they are elastic and can be compressed; and they have weight. The Stranger Next Door is one part laughing gas, two parts gas chamber. It's a novel about a man's downward spiral to self-destruction. One criticism I have, though, is that you can guess the ending of the book fairly easily, but I suppose mystery isn't the point. Before that fateful visit, Emile thought his life was perfect. Then this impenetrable, impassive presence makes him reflect and think otherwise. It becomes a kind of violation from which he never recovers. These are just one of the many dark 'truths' that Nothcomb explores in this short but explosive book.

It has the unfortunate tendency not to act; it prefers, passively, to be seen. Evil on the other hand, is like a gas: it's not easy to see but it can be detected by its odor. It's most often stagnant, disbursed in a suffocating sheet; initially this aspect seems inoffensive, but then suddenly you see it at work and you realize the ground it has won, the tasks it has accomplished. And by then it's all over; gas cannot be expelled."

След прочита на " Изумление и трепет", бях с толкова противоречиви чувства от стила на Нотомб, че се двоумях дали изобщо да направя нов опит с някоя нейна книга. И все пак, реших да дам втори шанс с " Речи против Катилина". Честно казано, тук разказът е доста по- различен от това, което очаквах. Да, изказът на Нотомб е както и преди--отсечен и без описателност, но поне има някакво развитие, навлизане в човешката психика и философски размисли, а не само сурова наблюдателност, тъпчеща на едно място. Погледнато от този аспект, първоначалното ми впечатление в този случай бе по- позитивно от предходната ми опитност с нейното писане, така че смело тръгнах от 3+ звездички, които постепенно започнаха да се сриват до 2.
Има нещо извратено симпатично в стилът на Амели Нотомб, но въпреки всичко, тя надмина очакванията ми в своята циничност.
" Речи против Катилина" е трагикомична история за опазването на личното пространство на възрастна семейна двойка и тяхното разкъсване между любезността и желанието им да поставят граници.
Целият разказ се осланя на дилемата на Жулиет и Емил да нарушат своите принципи на учтивост, за да съхранят хармоничното си усамотение и с главоблъскането им да намерят подходящ начин да разкарат любезно натрапчивият им съсед Бернарден. Не мога да повярвам как това се оказва толкова голямо изпитание за тях и то спрямо човек, който няма никакъв такт.
Беше ми любопитно да наблюдавам как досадният Бернарден им лази по нервите и ги изкарва извън равновесие, докато накрая не разчупи оковите на цялото им насадено благоприличие, на цялото им търпение и стереотипи.
Всъщност, точно съседът се оказа ключов фактор към личното себепознание на героите и преоткриване на техния вътрешен свят.
По- натам в историята, Нотомб сякаш избухна в своята сурова бруталност. Имаше доста гнусни и отблъскващи описания, които на моменти преливаха чашата на моята търпимост.
Маската на лицемерна учтивост у Жулиет и Емил постепенно се пропуква, изкарвайки наяве тяхната неосъзната душевна уродливост. Първоначалната ми симпатия към възрастната двойка се наклони към нетърпимост, неприязън и отвращение към тяхната псевдо- загриженост.
"Предимството на пречките в живота е, че тласкат индивида към крайното му укритие."
В цялата история, нямаше нито един персонаж, който да ми легне на сърце. Имах усещането, че авторката сякаш се стреми да изгради кой от кой по- шантав образ.
В крайна сметка, моята опитност с Нотомб приключва до тук. Не бих проявила повече мазохизъм с нейните нескопосани опити за оригиналност.
Добре, че "книгата" беше кратка и от време на време имаше проблясъци, че иначе това може би щеше да прецедент за мен, да не довърша нещо, което съм започнала.
Определено творчеството на Нотомб не е за мен и не е по мой вкус.

Je dirais que c'est jusqu'à présent mon Nothomb préféré. L'histoire est très simple, un couple à la retraite déménageant dans un coin retiré pour finir leurs années dans une solitude à deux, sauf que cette thébaïde comportait un voisin imprévu et non moins étrange. Palamède Bernadin a pris l'habitude de venir s'imposer chez eux de 16h à 18h, et ce, tous les jours, et presque sans dire un mot. Les tentatives de le rebiffer ou de le dissuader étant toutes vouées à l'échec, ces visites absurdes deviennent une source d'angoisse énorme pour le couple qui voient leurs jours se transformer en une "attente" stressante de la fatalité.
L'écriture est fluide et simple aussi, le livre étant court, y a pas place à de longues descriptions, néanmoins les personnages sont bien travaillés, on s'y attache facilement. L'humeur y est en abondance, un humour noir, très noir même, mêlé à une lucidité dérangeante, des réflexions presque philosophiques sur la vie sans plaisir (le voisin étant un parfait nihiliste), le suicide, l'handicap (la femme du voisin étant une masse tellement grosse et amorphe que le narrateur l'appelle "le kyste")...
On découvre peu à peu les "motivations" de cet intrus, des aspect de sa "vie", son épouse "spéciale" et si la fin s'avère prévisible on ne peut s'empêcher de méditer là-dessus.
Un petit joyau littéraire qui ne vous laissera pas indifférent.

Hui, kurz und knackig! Diese Geschichte ist wie ein Wirbelwind, hinterlässt tiefe Furchen und macht definitiv Lust auf mehr. Das war sicher nicht mein letztes Buch der Autorin.

The rules of politeness and social conduct make it hard for them to get rid of him, but when they finally do his horrible presence still lingers in the air next door.
Bernardin is a person who finds pleasure in nothing: it makes it his thing to be as miserable as ever and wants everyone around him to be the same way. Will they manage to escape his curse?
A very ingenious way of showing misery as a skillful weapon against other's happiness. It was a thrilling read :D .

„Der Professor“ von Amelie Nothomb – ein weiteres Buch der Autorin ist gelesen und ich muss sagen ich bin wieder einmal sehr begeistert! Amelie Nothomb schafft hier auf wenigen Seiten ein so bizarres Spiel und zeigt die Wandlung eines Menschen und winkt unterschwellig wieder ganz deutlich mit dem Zaunpfahl, das ist einfach der Wahnsinn! Auch zeichnet sich dieses Buch sehr durch seine Dialoge im einzelnen aus, finde ich. Man merkt hier schon sehr, dass die Protagonisten mit denen man es zu tun hat nicht dumm sind, das gab dem Ganzen wie ich finde nochmal eine ganz eigene besondere Note. Also auch hier wieder absolute Leseempfehlung!

покъртително отвратителна книга, меко казано.
не мога да повярвам, че това е хрумнало на някого, че го е написал, след това някой го е издал, а накрая все пак е преведено на други езици и някой го купува и още по-лошо - чете.
отне ми месеци да завърша книгата и до последно мислех, че ще стане нещо изненадващо, в положителен смисъл. но тя бе от началото до края досадна, ужасна, грозна и безсмислена.
за четвърти път чета Нотомб и се убеждавам, че нейните опити не са нито литература, нито изкуство, нито каквото и да е градивно или приятно четиво, за което си заслужава да отделиш време.
преди години бях чела "Нито Ева, нито Адам", като мъките ми приключиха с въпроса - "е, и какъв беше смисъла от всичко това?". след това беше ред на "Синята брада", която ме остави със смесени чувства, но по-скоро негативни. след това обаче попаднах на "Петрония", чийто анотаци�� ми звучеше като нещо приятно, и действително - книгата беше даже доста приятна.
и сега - този ужас.
идва обаче въпроса - защо продължавам? знаем кой повтаря грешките си до безкрай.

Un libro dall'incredibile capacità di analisi psicologica. Dapprima non ce ne si rende conto, i personaggi sembrano caricature - forse in fondo la coppia Bernardin lo rimane fino alla fine (Bernadette mi ricorda incredibilmente la versione finale della Strega delle lande nel Castello errante di Howl) - eppure possiamo parlare di una vera e propria epifania, c'è un momento in cui tutto, perfino lo straordinario, ritorna sotto il controllo dell'ordinario e si riesce ad aggiustare la prospettiva con cui guardiamo e giudichiamo gli eventi.
Sempre se di giudizio possiamo parlare. Arrivati all'ultimo carattere stampato dell'ultima pagina, si viene colti da un senso di presenza onirica. Quello che abbiamo letto diviene un sogno, comparso e scomparso in un attimo, è successo davvero?
Leggero sia fisicamente che emotivamente mentre lo si legge, pesa come un macigno una volta terminato.
Sempre se di giudizio possiamo parlare. Arrivati all'ultimo carattere stampato dell'ultima pagina, si viene colti da un senso di presenza onirica. Quello che abbiamo letto diviene un sogno, comparso e scomparso in un attimo, è successo davvero?
Leggero sia fisicamente che emotivamente mentre lo si legge, pesa come un macigno una volta terminato.

Das Buch ist voller literarischer Anspielungen, zuvörderst in den Tiraden, mit denen der Erzähler gegen den Nachbarn angeht, als dieser sie täglich und unaufgefordert besucht. Die Autorin greift zu den Mitteln der Groteske und läßt uns in menschliche Abgründe blicken. Ihr gelingt das Kunststück, den kurzen Text dicht anzufüllen mit Handlung, mit Beschreibungen sowie mit innerer und äußerer Rede, ohne daß er überladen oder kurzatmig wirken würde. "Der Professor" von Amélie Nothomb ist ein packender Roman, der Lesevergnügen auf hohem Niveau bietet.

Ma come si fa a recensire questa donna?
Due anziani coniugi decidono di passare ciò che resta della loro vita in un tranquillo paesino di campagna, lontano da tutto e da tutti, per godere della loro solitudine. Ma non hanno fatto i conti col vicino invadente, che mette a dura prova il loro amore per le convenzioni sociali e la loro buona educazione. Ovviamente, trattandosi della Nothomb, la vicenda deve prendere una piega grottesca, con descrizioni forti e riflessioni filosofiche non da poco.
C'è il lieto fine? C'è il lieto fine, ottenuto tramite mezzi non ortodossi che siamo portati a credere siano stati necessari.
Due anziani coniugi decidono di passare ciò che resta della loro vita in un tranquillo paesino di campagna, lontano da tutto e da tutti, per godere della loro solitudine. Ma non hanno fatto i conti col vicino invadente, che mette a dura prova il loro amore per le convenzioni sociali e la loro buona educazione. Ovviamente, trattandosi della Nothomb, la vicenda deve prendere una piega grottesca, con descrizioni forti e riflessioni filosofiche non da poco.

Zwei Handlungsorte, vier Personen und knapp 200 Seiten. Mehr braucht es für Amélie Nothomb nicht um mal wieder die Abgründe des Menschen darzustellen. Und mir gefällt das.
Wir begleiten das Ehepaar Hazel welches sich den Traum von einem kleinen abgeschiedenen Haus auf dem Land erfüllt um dort in aller Ruhe seinen Lebensabend zu verbringen. So weit, so gut. Wären da nicht die etwas merkwürdigen Nachbarn.
Anfangs zeichnet die Autorin ein sehr deutliches Bild von Opfer und Täter, welches sich aber mit der Zeit wandelt und irgendwann nur noch aus moralische Abgründen und psychologischer Folter besteht. Die Leben beider Ehepaare verstricken sich immer mehr miteinander und am Ende scheint es als ließe sich die Eskalation nicht mehr abwenden.
Es ist interessant zu beobachten wie Amélie Nothomb den Wandel der Charaktere beschreibt und zeigt zu was der Mensch fähig ist, wenn er sich in die Enge getrieben fühlt. Hier verschwimmt sehr schnell die Grenze zwischen Gut und Böse. Zurück bleibt ein Leser, der zwar weiß, was moralisch (und gesetzlich) richtig ist, trotzdem aber nachvollziehen und vielleicht sogar gutheißen kann was er da gerade gelesen hat.

Odious protagonist, odious premise, odious life scheme. It started like an intriguing tale but it was just loathsome. Totally predictable, it did not challenge a sick world view held by the protagonist, it rather supports it. The pusillanimous and judgmental nature of the main character made , this very short book bore me and annoy me. I was waiting for the author to surprise with a completely different assessment of the situation but, alas! She seemed to endorse her despicable character’s views. I found this book in the Bois de Boulogne apartment and read it following the praxis of reading books I find in my path. (Sometimes works better than others!!).

quand on lit plusieurs livres de suit d'Amélie, les histoires perdent un peu de leur charme et on commence à trouver les points de similarités et des répétitions dans ses écrits: la laideur et la beauté, le froid, le changement psychologique du protagoniste allant du neutre, bon, vilain et enfin confus. ceci est applicable à tous les romans non autobiographiques de l'écrivaine.

Nakon što je kao profesor grčkog i latinskog zaslužio mirovinu, Emil i njegova supruga Juliette kupuju kuću u ruralnom dijelu zemlje s namjerom da daleko od ljudi provedu ostatak života. Emil i Juliette znaju se oduvijek, a u „braku“ su još od svoje šeste godine. Proveli su cijeli život zajedno i za sreću im nije potreban nitko osim njih dvoje samih. Svojoj kući daju osobnost nazivaju je Kuća i čini se kako njihovo planu da uživaju u samoći usred pitoresknog kraja ništa ne stoji na putu. Čak ni prvi susjed.
No kad prvi susjed, šutljivi liječnik Bernardin jednog popodneva točno u 16:00 zakuca na njihova vrata, jasno vam je kako je prvi korak kojim će ova šutljiva grdosija prijeći prag novih susjeda, zapravo početak putovanja u kaos.
Dan za danom, točno u 16:00 Bernardin lupa na vrata, ulazi u Kuću, spušta se u naslonjač i tamo šutke sjedi do 18:00 kad konačno završava svoj posjet nakon čega bez riječi odlazi. Ritual u kojem susjed Bernardin svakodnevno u 16:00 dolazi na njihova vrata, gleda ih ispod oka, šuti i na svako pitanje odgovara s „Da“ ili „Ne“, Emila i Juliette dovodi do ludila. U bračni par se uvlači nemir u kojem kreće preispitivanje odluka o tome kako se postaviti prema ovoj šizofrenoj situaciji, no što god njih dvoje smislili ne daje rezultata, pa razrješenje ove priče neumitno vodi u propast.
Kako i sam naslov sugerira, Amélie Nothomb piše modernu priču s uvrnutim zapletom koju bazira na povijesnom sukobu između slavnog rimskog govornika i konzula Marka Tulija Cicerona i senatora Lucija Sergija Katiline.
Otkrivši Katalininu zavjeru i njegov pokušaj prevrata kojom je ovaj senator želio srušiti Rimsku Republiku i uspostaviti diktaturu, Ciceron je postao meta Katalininih ubojica, no izbjegavši atentat slavni govornik već sljedećeg dana saziva Senat gdje započinje svoj govor protiv Katiline poznatom rečenicom „Dokle ćeš, Katilino, zlorabiti strpljivost našu?“, a tijekom govora uzviknuo je i svoju poznatu misao „O tempora o mores!“, koja se i danas često čuje kad se osuđuju loši običaji nekog vremena.
Amélie Nothomb transponira poznatu povijesnu govorničku optužnicu gdje likove Cicerona i Katiline zamjenjuje Emilom i Bernardom, no sasvim je legitimno ako se tijekom čitanja zapitate nije li riječ o istom liku gdje je jedan od njih tek sjena ovog drugog, možda ne baš posve mu nalik, no svakako neodvojiv i konstantan.
Cijeli roman prožet je ironijom i crnim humorom, a zavidna je sposobnost spisateljice da običnu popodnevnu čajanku pretvori u govorničku arenu u kojoj vladaju domišljate doskočice koje u jednom trenutku, kao da odjednom u rukama držite punokrvni triler, prijete postati smrtno opasne.
Napeto, stiliziranih rečenica, prožeto humorom i majstorski napisano, sve što za početak ljeta želim od knjige.

Totalnie nie mam pojęcia, co myśleć. Byłaby to książka idealna do rekomendowania znajomym, by podyskutować, ale: 1) jest niesamowicie fatphobiczna, 2) a także ableistyczna, 3) na dodatek trudno uwierzyć, że pisana przez autorkę, bo z podejściem do kobiet strasznym.

В началото не знаеш дали четеш абсурдна комедия (черна при това) или психологическа драма с нотки на „това няма как да е нормално“. Но Нотомб държи читателя точно там – в златната среда между симпатия и смущение.

Прелиствах ли страниците със скоростта на светлината, за да разбера какво не им е наред на въпросните люде?
Абсолютно.
Имаше ли изненади?

Липсваше ли ми нещо?
Може би – очаквах кръв и драма.
Каквито имаше, но авторката толкова дълго подгряваше сцената ,,с пушката”, че накрая имах нужда да се изсипят снаряди. Вместо това получих игра с водни пистолетчета. Образно казано.
Историята ни среща с Емил и Жюлиет – двойка пенсионери, които намират мечтаната си къща и с удоволствие заменят интровертния градски живот с още по-откъснат и затворен – провинциален. Какво може да смути това спокойствие? Съседът Бернарден – възрастен лекар, който всеки ден се появява в дома им точно в 16:00. Два мъчителни часа траят неговите неканени визити. Странни, смущаващи, лишени от каквито и да е възпитание и такт.
Защо нашата двойка продължава да допуска натрапника? И защо той, видимо отегчен и недоволен, не спира своите редовни визити?
В книгата нищим навици, характери, страхове. Разплащаме цял живот изграждани ценности. Има една приказка- ,,прекаленият светец и богу не е драг”. Тук важи с пълна сила. Слабост замаскирана като куртоазия. Страдание скрито зад грубост. И една гротескна госпожа Бернарден, която стряска със своята поява.
Не препоръчвам за първа среща с Амели. Това е роман по-скоро за заклетата й публика.

Un romanzo che mette al centro l'uomo, in continuo mutamento con l'ambiente e con le persone di cui si circonda. Amèlie Nothomb con l'opera "Le Catilinarie" tenta di dare un'impronta mediana al lettore che viene sedotto dai dialoghi strutturalmente perfetti, lirici sotto certi aspetti. Una scrittura avvincente, che affascina e coinvolge il lettore, pronto a emergersi negli ambienti in cui vivono Emèlie e Juliette, personaggi alle prese con la metafora del nulla vivente; di questo nulla che appartiene a Palamèdele Bernadin. Ne risulta un romanzo ricco di dialoghi e di avvenimenti affrontati da Emèlie, ormai completamente trasformata a contatto con la grassezza di Palamèdele. Uno dei migliori romanzi della scrittrice, a mio parere.

„Речи против Катилина“ (ИК. „Колибри“, 2017) определено не е подходяща за първа среща с Амели Нотомб, но за феновете на авторката удоволствието е гарантирано. Белгийската писателка е майсторка на шантавите сюжети и неочакваните обрати, а този роман определено не прави изключение от останалите й.

Нотомб отново си играе с простотата на думите, оголва ги и ги поставя в такава редица, че от значение да останат само усещанията – погнусата, желанието да побегнеш, играта на нерви със случващото се.
Лудa, шокиращa, междувременно невероятно забавна – прозата на Амели ще ви докаже, че дори малките битови неща могат да извадят наяве дяволите у нас...

L'idea iniziale dei libri di Nothomb mi piace sempre tantissimo, poi arrivati ad un certo punto si scade un po' nella retorica frivola e nello sfoggio di conoscenze che però non arricchiscono in niente la trama...
