Do I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

How can I, when the truth will destroy us all? Now that I’ve started telling lies, I can’t stop. Not until all this is over, and I’m free of the family that never felt like mine. Maybe it’s wrong. Maybe I’m a bad person.

But it’s definitely the only way I’m ever going to escape them. I have to take the opportunity, no matter how terrible it is...don’t I?

I couldn't wait for judgment to be released and I'm pleased to say it was worth it! After reading book 1,2&3 in quick succession I was left on a terrible cliffhanger that meant I was wanting more but not able to read it, so when I saw Judgment was released I had to buy it and start reading straight away.

The book picks up pretty much where it left off, with Rain in prison and Asher working hard on her case. I was unsure how Jade Varden would keep the momentum through the book and where she would lead us with the story but learning from previous experiences with her work I didn't eve try to guess, knowing it would be unpredictable.

Judgement moved at a fast pace which pleasantly surprised me as most of it is set in the court room. I loved the way Varden made the trial interesting and engaging to read with elements of cleverly placed humor. I thought it might be a little like To Kill a Mockingbird (which bored me to death when I studied it) but Judgment, although similar was far more interesting. Constant battles between the lawyers, witnesses and judge kept things moving at a rapid and engaging pace, keeping me hooked to find out what the next testimony would be.

Like always with Varden's work, the writing flows effortlessly to create an interesting, intriguing and well developed plot that is easy for the audience to understand. She also kept the terminology pretty basic which I was thankful for as it meant I could enjoy the story without worrying about complex lawyer terms. She struck the balance perfectly with the detail she went into and the terms she used. The plot was easy to follow and even though it summed up what we already knew, Varden wrote it in a way that made it seem like a separate and different narrative which was great as it didn't feel repetitive in anyway.

Throughout the book Varden leaves subtle/not so subtle hints about some big turn of events and a plan Rain is devising which kept me turning pages until about 2am, as I had to finish the book the same day. I must admit that I could not predict what happened in the ending though. I had an idea of what might occur in general but what I read was even better and worth the wait. It rounded off the series nicely and made sure there was a big enough resolve to keep the reader satisfied and without questions.

While reading there were a few minor typos "Ran" instead of "Rain" or "dd" instead of "did" but the quality of all the books in general have been to a high standard that even if there are a few mistakes they don't detract in any way from the writing. Believe me you will be too engrossed to notice and I only spotted them as I was in editor mode when I started reading.

Over all I would not only high recommend this book but the whole series as a must read! This book rounds everything off nicely and gives enough detail about characters to leave you satisfied with the feeling of finality I'm so glad the author contacted me about Justice(#1) so I could buy the others and experience this great series. All the books have unpredictable twists that will keep you wanting more, fast paced action, romance and so much more. You would be silly to miss out on reading this book!

At last, AT LAST I have finished the last book in ‘The Deck of Lies’ series (see reviews for book 1 here, book 2 here and book 3 here) and it was SOOO GOOD! Just the right drop to satisfy my thirst for Rain to get the justice she deserves!

I won’t elaborate on the characters here, as my opinion about them is pretty much the same as book 3. However, what I will write is that I really like how Rain finally grew into the person that she was destined to be. It took guts for her to get through all these trials and tribulations, all these secrets and heartbreak, but she finally did it and she pretty much did it all by herself. She kicks arse!!!

In terms of the actual story, without giving too much away, I LOVEDDDDDDD the courtroom scenes!!! Oh my freakinggggg goodness, it was gooodddddddddddddddd! WELL DONE JADE! It was as if I was watching an episode of ‘Law and Order’. I absolutely loved the personality of not only Asher when he was the super calm and charismatic defence lawyer but also the very dramatic attitude and personality of the prosecutor. Both personalities was used very well to add to these dramatic scenes.

The court room takes up much of the book’s plot and to a good reason. It is here where we find out the anticlimax of the story. I just want to say one thing about this.....IT WAS A BLOODY GOOD TWIST (imagine this being said in a very British accent). As much as I loved the court scenes, the witnesses testimonies, the teasing and insults that Asher threw as the prosecutor from time to time as well as playing along with the juries, the finale of the court scenes made me buckle ten times over. And it wasn’t just the reveal of the twist that was shocking (although it was just as shocking) but it was the way the twist was revealed. Now for all who hasn’t read this book, won’t have any clue whatsoever I am talking about, but I want this review to be a spoiler free one, because, well simply, I don’t want to ruin this epic conclusion to the series. You just have to find out yourself and experience these emotions and feelings in your own time. I AM NOT SPOILING ANYTHING FOR YOU.
But for those of you who have read it, will know EXACTLY what I’m talking and would probably have felt....or is still feelings...these emotions (or at least I hope). It’s a shame that most real court scenes are not as dramatic and spine tingling as this was.

Again, not revealing the actual ending, but I felt very satisfied the whole conclusion and thought the Rain got the justice she actually deserved. This also applies for the other characters. I like how each one got their final ending, some bad (well most of them) and some good.

Finally, I would like to point out that I am pleased Jade used both Rain and River’s name as a metaphor within this book. Of course, both names are an unusual name for characters but I’m pleased it served as something in this series, something like a symbol for their love and for the fact that they will always be together in whatever situation.

I am pleased to give not only this book, but the WHOLE series a 5 OUT OF 5 STARS! I am extremely pleased Jade first contacted to review the first book, so thank you Jade and thank you for bringing this whole series to a brilliant conclusion.

The time has come. After sitting patiently in her jail cell for months, Rain's trial is about to begin. After months of plotting and planning, she can finally gain her freedom. Or can she? Surrounded by all the lies, she is left wondering if Asher will really try to get her off, or if she is walking right into his clutches once again. But Rain has her own plan, and if she gets her way, her life will finally be hers to control.

This book was perfect. I was so nervous for Rain. I was a little afraid of who was going to get happy endings, and how things were going to pan out in the end. The writing lovingly holds your hand and leads you through the story.

The characters were all the same as they have been. A few bonds are formed, a few bridges burned, but things all play out for the best with the friendships. I was very pleased at how things ended with everyone. Hard to say much on them because of a spoiler risk, but things are good. I am pleased.

When you begin reading, you are filled with so many questions. You are anxious and just burning for answers. Varden tosses you a curve ball right from the start by making things almost boring. This is not a bad thing. You start off seeing some of the day to day life that Rain spends in her cell. It calms you. Your questions go to the backburner. You are certain they will be answered, but you have to learn patience. This book was all about Rain showing that she herself had learned patience, so teaching it to the reader is brilliant. Then the trial begins. I cannot lie, the trial is dull! The court proceedings are written brilliantly. The courtroom is stuffy, dull, drab, and very true to life. It was all captured so fantastically. It is really a brilliant writing technique. It slowly builds up, you almost feel like you are right there in that boring courtroom along with everyone. When the Defense begins their case, you can tell the climax is coming.

Then you get another curve ball. You learn about two things that had happened in the shadows, and things fall into place as the world tumbles down for some and rights itself for others. I remember my jaw dropping and a smirk taking over my face. It was brilliant. I wish there was a better word to describe it, but there really isn't. Then you get to see the aftermath as everyone puts their lives into the new shells that are created for them.

It was really wonderful to watch it all.

Judgment was a fantastic ending to an amazing series. Loose ends were tied up, lives were changed, and justice was served. I am so happy to have been exposed to this series. Highly recommended to all.

So… IT FINALLY CAME OUT! I have to say, I was SO nervous about how this series would end! I really cared about Rain and wanted her to have a good ending. Her life was ALL kinds of messed up. (not to mention, I always want the good guys to win and the bad guys to get justice) and I just really couldn’t see a way that could happen. I mean… at the end of Death… (the 3rd book) I just could NOT find a way this could end up that would make me happy.

So, this story starts out with Rain in jail, waiting until her 17th birthday, the day she would have the trial for a murder she didn’t commit. Her pseudo father is now her lawyer but his priorities do NOT lie with Rain. His loyalties are actually with the murderer… so her situation totally sucks!
The realities of jail are actually a lot harsher than portrayed in this book, but I supposed if you have millions of dollars at your fingertips than you can create a sort of safe haven in jail…? Not too sure about that.

Finally the trial starts, and for minute I thought I was watching an episode of Law and Order or something! Haha. (A show I used to watch regularly for years) For a brief moment, I got kinda tired of the back and forth banter between the lawyers and the witnesses that I really didn’t care about. I mean… I was so ready to figure out where all her little clues were leading to! I know Rain had SOMETHING up her sleeve, but I just didn’t know what.

I have to say… I LOVED LOVED LOVED this entire series! BUT I love the ending best of all!! It is everything I could have asked for (had I known what to ask for) in an ending!! JUSTICE was served!!! (not 100% but enough to satisfy me) Rain grows emotionally and mentally after all the trauma she has endured through her short life! (she was a much better person in the end than I could have been. Way more generous)

PLUS… OMG… Wait for it…

RIVER!!! *fan girl squee*

I always loved River! From the very beginning through all the ups and downs!! And though this is NOT primarily a romance novel… River made me love this series SOOO MUCH!!
And like I said… the end? PERFECT

I gotta say. I rarely read novels that are not in some way paranormal/fantasy/something strange that doesn’t actually happen in real life. I mean, ill do a contemporary romance every now and then. But that’s it!

This series does not lay in ANY of those categories! BUT I love it!!
This was a perfect ending to a GREAT series!!

Rating: 5 Stars!!!

"Judgement" by Jade Varden is the final instalment of her great Deck of Lies series. The final showdown is a courtroom drama, professionally written, cleverly thought through and skilfully executed. There are a lot of threads to tie up and Varden does this once more with a few more trumps up her sleeve to spare us predictability and boredom. How she keeps it up for four books is amazing.
Don't miss it.

Judgement is a great conclusion to the series, bringing everything together into a satisfying and memorable climax. Part courtroom drama, part YA the mysteries of the previous books, the key relationships and events are all delivered in Jade Varden's clear, crisp writing. This is a great YA series, one of the best I read in 2012 - definitely recommended.

Judgment (Deck of Lies, #4), Author Jade Varden, was all I hoped it would be... I couldn't and didn't put it down... In the end, there were a few things I thought Rain should have addressed differently, but if you know Rain, she had to do it her way. The final day in court was amazing... perfectly orchestrated!

A must read... 1, 2 and 3 first!

This is book 4 in the ‘Deck of Lies’ series.
**Warning – some unavoidable spoilers for books 1, 2 &3.**
Rain is now in jail for killing Laurel Riordan, even though her entire family know that it was actually her supposed sister Carsyn who really did it.
Will Rain be convicted though? Can Asher really talk his way out of this? Or does he have his own ideas about what should happen to Rain?

This was a great end to the series, but there were just a few little niggly things at the end that spoiled it a bit.

Rain was once again brilliant in this story. She played the hand she was given and won, again! Even against the biggest player of them all – her fake father Asher. I really wish that she hadn’t had to spend 6 months in jail to do it though, no matter what, 6 months in jail is going to affect her and her job prospects for the rest of her life, especially considering that she was accused of murder!

I liked the storyline in this book, though again I really wish that Rain hadn’t had to go to jail! I thought that the court room scenes were pretty good, and there was plenty of drama, and I also liked the way that Rain eventually managed to turn the tables on Asher himself. I did feel that once the court room drama was over though, the book lost its way and its pace, and the ending was a little boring.
There was a bit of romance, although this was very much a side-line, and I wasn’t overly impressed with how the romance angle played out, as the couple in question went from not speaking to playing happy families extremely quickly, and I didn’t quite believe it.

I thought that the overall storyline was pretty twisted in this series. It seemed that everybody was having affairs with everyone else, to the point where one person was both someone else’s half-brother, and step-son. It also seemed like everybody had their own agenda, and everyone was pretty happy to go around backstabbing people as well.

The ending was okay, but I was disappointed over certain things. It’s really hard to explain without dropping spoilers, but I just felt that certain parties weren’t really brought to justice, and certain cases were not truly closed. I was also surprised at where Sawyer and Laurel’s daughter ended up, and didn’t quite get why there weren’t disputes over this.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, and the whole series in fact, but there were just these little niggly things that stopped this for being truly spectacular.

MORE REVIEWS AT: LITTLE BOOK STAR

*Sighs*. Where do I freaking begin? I seriously do not know how I’m going to explain all the feels to you in WORDS. That’s just impossible! This book is such a FANTASTIC conclusion to the Deck of Lies series. Round of applause to our amazing author, Jade Varden! I read this amazing book in one day. I read it until my eyes were twitching and watery because it was such a page-turner (like the rest of the books in the series). First of all, I love how vague the summary is! I think it was wise for the summary to be vague because there are just so many mysteries and plot twists in this whole series from page 1. Each book just got better and better, and I think Judgement is the best out of all.

This book is written in first person point of view of Rain Ramey, a junior in high school who’s life was basically a lie. She’s been through so many crap and I LOVE how she changed from the first book until the last one. Jade Varden did a fabulous job on developing her characters. The romance was also cute, and it did not overpower the main plot which is awesome! What I love the most about this book are the plot effin’ twists. THERE ARE SO MANY! Just go read the book guys, PLEASE! Judgement is about Rain currently waiting in her cell in jail for her trial for a murder she did not even commit. The jail part was unrealistic though, but it did not really bother me. But the court scenes…Oh my gosh, the court scenes were freakin HILARIOUS but SCARY! You guys should have seen how tense I was because it was freaking INTENSE, but funny at the same time because the people that were testifying were being witty! It was soooo funny to see the judge pissed at them, and how the lawyers were getting HEATED!

Overall I really love how the story was wrapped up. I thought it was well-done! If you are looking for a book that can get you out from your reading slump, this series is the ONE. It has mystery, adventure, plot twists (for like the hundredth time), cute romance, and lots of funny court scenes! So yes, just go read this series because it’s one of the best out there! GO, NOW!
