In this volume we get a never seen before trope: the love triangle! *sigh* The second guy of the love triangle is not at all better, he’s unsympathetic and kinda shady that he fell so fast in love with Shima.

But the story had some moments and I especially like the art school as the theme of the manga, but the students are never shown once in a lesson lol.

Akatsuki is honestly just toxic and possessive and does things without the consent of Shima. Shima herself acts randomly childish which was extremely weird.

And I still have my problems with the art style: I don’t like the look of the faces and the male guys don’t look good; their faces are kinda too sharp, the blushing looks weird as well. At one point, Shima is supposed to be crying but you couldn’t see it at all because of the art style.

Crayon Days is still your average Shojo manga, and this volume gets a 2.5 again.

Akatsuki is kinda a jerk but so is Rei. We have insta love and a super weird love triangle in this🥴 Shima acts weird sometimes but nothing too bad. I just have to keep in mind that all the characters are 16. It just feels like they are all 13 or 14 tho lol. Overall, this volume is better than volume 1.

Review for complete series

Shima wants to do something different in her life and decides to make more of her hobby: drawing. She enrols at a famous art school where people are soon to point out that she doesn't even know the basics of art. But that doesn't let Shima down - she loves to draw and won't let anything put a damper on her passion, not even the school's most-praised artist Akatsuki.

I am baffled by the number of average ratings Crayon Days is receiving - as far as I'm concerned, this is a beautiful manga. First and foremost, art is not just a means to make Shima seem to have more depth - art is indeed a core and important theme throughout this series. She loves to draw and it shows - there are several beautiful panels in which she just drifts off and is wholly in her element of spreading colours on whichever surface offers itself.

Not unsurprisingly, there is a love story between Shima and Akatsuki, and they make such a fun and wholesome couple. They bicker a lot but it's done in a rather loving way; Shima doesn't let Akatsuki's comments bring her down and instead she boldly stands up to him. The bickering lasts throughout the series but both of them are also very caring and gentle toward each other - I love that they talk things out so that there's never any serious drama around things such as jealousies. Akatsuki in particular is very supportive in his way and, despite teasing Shima a lot, he never puts her into a situation where she truly doubts herself which I find is often the case in shoujo where the male leads act distant to make the girl feel bad.

Shima herself makes a lovely heroine - at times she may appear naive but I just love her positive attitude. She's such a ray of sunshine who loves what she does and doesn't waste time moping about. Sure, even Shima has moments where she feels sad, she's human after all, but she always gets back up on her feet to face whatever it was that caused her grief - she's definitely a proactive main character.

The supporting cast is ok - nothing too special, nothing too bland. Perhaps it's notable that Shima's friends are a lesbian couple, but that's about all that makes them stand out in any way. What was a bit of a shame is that Shima mentions quite early in the series that she feels unhappy about her parents; her younger sister is sickly and gets a lot of the parents' attention while they never paid much attention to Shima's interest in art. It would have been nice if this had been picked up on again but sadly that was not the case.

Chiba's art is quite typical for shoujo, but it's a beautiful style nonetheless (if you like shoujo art, which I do), and it becomes more refined with each new work she creates. The art alone is a big reason to give this one a go. It's beyond me why this series receives such a poor rating as I consider it to be well above the average of its kind.

I loved it from the beginning to the end; well it yet had to be translated to English the last chapters, but whatever. I think if you have read my review on Unmasked Noise, you might have noticed that I said a bit about Crayon Days, I didn’t want to start this manga because of several things. First one was because it was about painting and I didn’t think that the Black & White could transform colors. And the other one was because it was not finished being translated yet. I sincerely apologize for the first one, because while reading this manga I was really thinking that colours were coming to life on my tablet.

The story is about a young girl – Shima, who loves to paint and because of that she leaves fro Tokyo to study arts. There the amazing adventures of a country girl start. On the very first day she meets the person she will soon fall in love with – Saki Akatsuki. He is a genius painter, and quite an eccentric one too. When he sees her looking at his work-in-progress, he just rips the canvas saying, “don’t look!” Their relationship began not as great as it would have been thought. Saji is a pervert and a sadist, while Shima, who is a country bumpkin, knows her value and though in the beginning they can’t stand each other, very soon they will reveal their feelings. However, will everything be as easy as it seems?

This manga is really amazing. Every page of it radiates positive feelings, and you just can’t put it down. Every chapter leaves you wanting more. Shima and Saji are really great characters; you love Shima for her simplicity and for her kindness. Even though Saji might seem bad in the beginning, he has a really nice side to him. They are artists from the bottom of their heart. The moments when they are engrossed in painting are the best parts of the whole manga. Another quite interesting character is Inocchi, that’s Saji’s friend. He is really mysterious. I still don’t get it, if he really likes Shima or is just having fun with her.

Thought the 16th chapter does give some clues about his behavious. However, it doesn’t only give that, at the end of the chapter a love-rival for Shima appears. Who is she? I do have my ideas, and they can’t be wrong, but I am not saying anything. It’s up to you to fin out!

I hope you will find some time to read this story. You will love it a lot, both the art and the plot too. As always Chiba Kozue brings us an amazing story to read. Enjoy it to its fullest. Have fun and don’t forget to leave your thoughts below. Stay tuned for more reviews and promos on Katie’s Corner. Happy reading!
