This essential book explores the importance of understanding the range of values of a subject, from light to dark and all the variations in between, and demonstrates the drawing techniques that can be used to render realistic forms. The step-by-step projects help artists develop their skills through shading, contrasting elements, studying composition, drawing white objects, using lighting effects, and more.
The book was above my capacity as an artist to follow but it certainly gives the basic understanding of values and a few important paradigms for the artist to adopt. Each new concept includes step by step exercises, but again, not for beginner to follow.
Quick and easy read, lots of info laid out simply and efficiently. Most of the info wasn’t new to me, but reinforced what I know. I did pick up a few ideas and tips that will be very helpful.
