In the 1940s it was not done for a gently reared middle-class English girl to marry an unknown Indian with no visible means of support. However Heather is swept off her feet by the fascinating Mohendra. Their marriage is unconventional, erratic, funny and sad.
I adored this book. I devoured it. The scope of the background, India and Britain, 40's -70's is breathtaking. The subtle way in which the heroine is passive and yet daring is masterful. A chance discovery I went on to read all her other books and was not disappointed by a single one of them.
