A long time has passed since Elsie's heart was broken, since the person who always shielded her from pain broke her heart. Just when she begins to rebuild, Henry returns and upends everything all over again.

ENGAGE is the fifth (and second-to-last) installment of The DISARM Series.
I didn't care for this book, the hero, or the heroine's lack of backbone. It's a shame, because when I started this series, I truly loved these two characters. One thing's for sure; I may not love this book, but I do love this author's writing style.
The story is told through Elsie’s POV. The thing I loved most about this installment is how much both Elsie and Henry's character have grown emotionally.
June Gray really has outdone herself with this one. For a novelette, this really reads and feels like a full length novel. It’s smooth, engaging and the heat has been “cranked” up to sizzle.
He surged to his feet and took me captive with his mouth as his hands cradled my face. I reached behind him and pulled him closer to me, rocking my hips into his.
“Do you believe me now?” he asked, pressing his hard length into my stomach. Before I could answer he flipped me around so that my back was pressed to his bare chest. His hand snaked up to my neck and forced my head to the side, his mouth devouring mine again. “I will want you always,” he rasped, pressing kisses down my neck.
2 1/2 stars (rounded down to 2 stars because I actually rooted for "the other guy" - Sean, Elsie's new boyfriend - and wanted Henry to go far, far away and never come back)
Life’s in an uproar while Henry tries to deal with his identity crisis. And whether Elsie likes it or not she’s got to learn to cope without her BFF, her lover and someone whose been the most important man in her life for the first time since she’s been a teenager.
Then just when Elsie’s dried her tears and decided to take a chance and move on with her life...heeee’s back...with a vengeance to mess with her life once again.
In theory, Elsie should be telling Henry to hit the road and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out...but they’re soul mates and meant to be, the ultimate loves of each others lives...so it’s not all cut and dried, black and white and certainly not an easy decision for Elsie to just kick Henry to the curb.
And then Henry pulls out the rock; that damned star-shaped sentimental rock.
Henry’s getting a second chance and he better not screw it up this time.
I couldn't wait to get my hands on Engage today and it didn't disappoint. The author wrote the time jump well and I liked how we got to see Elsie try to get her life back on track but Henry was never far from her thoughts. Looking forward to reading Capture and seeing how June Gray completes this mini series. 5 stars
Disarm was originally written into six parts, so I will break out my review into six parts. Overall, I am rating the book 3 stars-ish.
Book 1 – Disarm
I liked the beginning. Henry is Elsie’s brother’s best friend, Jason. All three grew up together. Henry and Jason are in the military. Jason dies overseas. Overcome with major distraught, Henry and Elsie grow closer and move in together.
It’s a sad beginning, but I love it! I’m so into the brother’s best friend for some reason. Oh the pain Henry goes through. He is so in love with Elsie but he doesn’t want to pursue her because of his best friend, yeah, I know even though he’s not alive.
Book 2 – Besiege
Henry goes overseas and after six months of waiting, he’s back. I’m really excited for this because I want to know what will happen next?! Major events happened in Disarm.
Elsie is a great character. Yes, it took her awhile to understand where Henry’s coming from, but she’s just going through the emotions. You really do feel for her because Henry isn’t like how he was before.
Book 3 – Retreat
This is where things get kind of tough and really difficult for me. I felt like Henry and Elsie was getting on track with working things out, but Henry is just messed up. I guess I just don’t understand where he’s coming from. I can’t relate. I understand stuff happened overseas, but he’s being a prick and it’s pissing me off.
Book 4 – The Henry Session
This is Henry’s POV, flash back. In all honesty, this book could have been omitted from the series. It was not needed, I skimmed and it was just kind of boring. There were some sweet parts, but I felt like it was kind of already addressed in the previous books.
Book 5 – Engage
Getting back on track with the original tone of the series, I’m ready for Henry to redeem himself and kind of explain and show Elsie why he is the way he is. It’s a short section and I’m warming up back up to the series.
Book 6 – Capture
All things come to an end and you must wrap it up. I felt that Capture had a lot of the same look and feel of Disarm and I was happy about that since I enjoyed the beginning so much.
Overall
It was difficult for me to read the book broken into six books. At some parts, I felt like there was some disconnect, maybe it’s because of the Henry sessions kind of threw me off. I really enjoyed the beginning of the series (YAY STEAM!), but it was a slight struggle to get through the second half. I was however, very satisfied with the last book and I am not sure if Henry ever fully redeemed himself, he tried very hard to.
Elsie is still in pain and trying to move on with her life as best as she can. Henry still tried to remain a quiet presence in her life, but his phone calls went to voice message, a birthday card taped to her door. He was there, but at the same time not. It was probably naive of him to think that she would be able to go from being blissfully in love to mere acquaintances. But then she hears news through the grapevine that he’ll be leaving for a one year tour in Korea. She shows up at the going away party to say goodbye, and find some sort of closure one way or another. Unfortunately things don’t go quite as expected. Her hurt leads her to do something he once did to her.
I wouldn’t say that I agreed with her actions at all, but I suppose that love and hurt will make people lash out in ways that seem like a good idea at the time, but only end up causing more pain for both sides. And what he said to her at the party, I REALLY want to know what he was thinking at that moment. Oh the cruelty.
After reading On One Condition this book was recommended and I bought it by mistake as I thought I was getting a preview instead of a purchase. Winds up that this is a short book or story. The only interesting concept is where the former girlfriend gives her old boyfriend the assignment to "make me fall in love with you in three dates or less." The Novelette ended on that challenge and unfortunately the writing is not good enough for me to want to keep reading even though the concept is intriguing.
Another amazing ride on the Elsie/Henry rollercoaster of love! At the beginning I really wanted to punch Henry in the face for the mean things he told her before he left on his other deployment! Once he took her to Dallas for the "surprise" then I began to love Henry again! So looking forward to Captured to come out soon!
This novelette pushed all my buttons. I like romantic novels about as well as any sixty year old guy can but let me tell you I hate Henry. How could he keep breaking E's heart? I know they will probably get together at the end of the story but she should do better tanthis half way bad boy. She could have had Seth but instead she broke his heart. Can hardly wait for the next (last?) installment.
Tear jerker! Started off hating Henry but then loved him again at the end. Love these books. Love the characters! Love their story even though its sad sometimes. Can't wait for the next one. I hope it's not the last one.
Love love love this next chapter for Henry and Elsie!! This book surprised me in many ways!! Can not wait to see what the conclusion will be for these two. This series has been such an emotional high and low. Patiently waiting for the final book in this series!!
How could such a short book annoy me so much. I found myself thinking Elsie has no self respect when she allowed Henry back into her life with no reservations. Was she hit with a stupid stick between books?
Another great one in the series, i've read all five of them just today! Really looking forward to the sixth book! The way it finished off left such great possibilities :)
Brace yourself for a painful case of whiplash! Poor Elsie should file a claim with her insurance for the pain and suffering Henry’s train wreck has put her through. As anyone who has experienced a breakup of epic proportions can attest to, the results are not just emotional and mental but can leave you feeling physically ill and I could feel Elsie’s pain upon her return to OKC and then again when she attended Henry’s farewell party, visited his hotel room, and once more when she opened her apartment door to find him standing outside. This installment in the series gave me stomach cramps from the heartbreak we had to witness.
Ay, qué ganas de complicar las cosas, aunque entiendo que Henry quiera buscarse a sí mismo. Lo que no vi venir fue lo de cierto personaje que aparece por ahí. Yo esperaba que alguien volviera, no esto...
Engage is the fifth installment in the Disarm series by author June Gray.
When we first start reading this installment, it is five months after Henry left Elsie. We are back to reading from Elsie's POV. While I am a little disappointed that we have switched back to her POV, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The last book quenched my thirst for his side and now we get to see the fall out on Elsie's side. She is having a hard time moving on from Henry. He was her happily ever after and he ripped it away from her like a mother pulling a bandage off.
Then we flash forward another 10 months and just as Elsie is starting a new relationship, Henry comes back. He has finally found his way and himself. He also is planning on winning Elsie back even if it takes the rest of his life. He even drops the bomb to her that he has given up the military for her.
The first part of this book was a little ho-hum for me. It was depressing and I really got tired of hearing about how she will never get over Henry. Then when Henry comes back, the story takes off again. This series is definitely one where the hero is what makes it so good. When Henry comes onto the page it just sucks the reader in. While I still don't believe how he had to 'find himself' to make the relationship work, I agree that it did make the story richer and have the characters grow.
I think the best part about this installment though is when Henry takes Elsie to Dallas for a surprise gift. What he reveals to her was quite a surprise in those few chapters. Why it did seem to come out of left field and probably just something that needed to help the story arc, it was still sweet.
This isn't my favorite in this series, but it is one that matured the characters and helped them find their own way. I am looking forward to reading the final book in this series and I am keeping my fingers crossed that Henry doesn't blow it again! Bring on the HEA!
This segment begins five months after Henry's big reveal and is told from Elsie's POV. There are some nice surprises here that pulled on my heartstrings.
The story moves quickly to fifteen months and Henry has returned. Without revealing much, I'll just say I'm disappointed in Elsie. I'd hoped for more backbone.
Henry is still as sexy as ever. While Elsie may be teetering the line of forgiveness, I'm still mad as hell at him. And just as confused. One of the first things he says to Elsie upon his return is, OK, so, I thought that's why
Hopefully, the last installment,Capture, will included the magical text that will put me back in that happy place with Henry.
As always, Ms. Gray continues to gives us exemplary writing and I'm looking forward to more.
As much as I loved Henry and reading his perspective in The Henry Sessions, it was painful reverting back to Elsie’s viewpoint in Engage. I am so emotionally invested in these stories that I once again felt the hurt and anger she felt when he broke her heart, and the pain would not go away.
This installment jumps months ahead for their initial meeting after their breakup (which killed me!), and then again when Henry is deployed and Elsie attempts to move on with her life. When he returns after his deployment, he makes his intentions to win her back known and Elsie struggles with her inability to trust him all the while knowing that she never stopped loving him.
I completely understood Elsie’s conflicted feelings and wanted to strangle Henry at times. But at the end of the day, I truly love these two characters and want them to have their HEA. I’m really looking forward to reading the final installment, Capture, to find out what Henry does to win her back. Here’s hoping for something romantic and amazing to conclude this wonderful series!
Arrrrgh. I just wrote a long and detailed explanation of why and how I want to enjoy this series more than I actually do, but GR ate it.
Oh well, suffice it to say that the writing here, while endearingly earnest, is awkward and keeps straining at my ability to suspend disbelief due to: bewildering and inconsistent character motivations; internal and external dialogue that lacks the flow--or rather, fits and starts--of unrehearsed verbal or mental speech; the unconvincingly executed narrative fiction of recorded therapy sessions in the last installment; and a straight up continuity error in this chapter.
I don't usually like to read series books because, I can't stand to wait for the next one to come out after I've read the 1st, 2nd or 3rd...however I really like this Disarm series and even though I was so excited to see what happened in the story I was ok about waiting on the next book to come out. I was so excited when I saw that Engage was out I brought it and read it in no time. So now I am patiently waiting on the final book "CAPTURE" in mid December to come out. I would recommend this series book.
The Cover: The cover doesn't grab my attention The Characters: Elsie is cute, funny and awkward. The girl next door type. Henry is hot and sensitive, strong and sweet. The Story Line: The story line is the same as the rest yet different - I like it. The Ending: It ties into the next book...
...omg, omg omg lol, I didn't expect that at all. So sweet, loved that little ray of sunshine in this book. Break out a few tissues. Best book out of all of them maybe.
After nearly one year since Henry left for Korea, Elsie is determined to move forward. She is dating Seth, a nice guy that makes her laugh and cares for her. She can see a future with him even if she can't see herself ever loving someone the way she ever loved Henry. Then a phone call changes her life again. It took Henry a long time to find himself, and he might have lost the love of his life in the process, but now he will do whatever it takes to win Elsie back. She is his and nothing will ever change that. In this installment of Disarm a lost secret about Jason comes to light.
