Amy's marriage to Mark isn't the best - he can't resist the girls, he can't hold down a job. But she doesn't want to know just how bad things are until his gambling habit brings the debt collector to her door. He makes it brutally clear how she can pay off Mark's debts . . . And Amy's troubles are only beginning. Someone else wants Mark for herself, and she is ready to steal Amy's man, her self-respect and even her children. As the stakes rise, Amy will either lose everything, or she'll have to learn how to be as hard and ruthless as her enemies . . .
Mandasue was born in Cheshire and moved to Manchester in 1982. She spent ten years living in the notorious Hulme Crescents which have since become the background to her novels. Not only is she a talented writer, but she has also sung in cabaret and rock groups, seventies soul cover bands and blues jam bands.
Thank God that's over. Started quite well and had some promise but went down hill rapidly. I couldn't feel any sympathy with any of the characters. Story was flat, felt like something on Eastenders, Coronation Street or a Jeremy Kyle story.n In other words CRAP. I normally only award 1 star to books I DNF, and was hoping to give it 2 stars, but could not bring myself to do it. As ending just didn't help boost it.
I think that must be one of the bleakest books I've ever read. Amy and Mark got married too young and now they have two young children. Let's be blunt here - Mark is a waste of space, an oxygen thief. He's lazy, can't keep a job, blames anyone else for what is wrong with his life and he can't keep his dick in his pants. But Amy still loves him and he loves his kids, when he bothers to spend five minutes with them. After he gets fired, again, Amy hits the roof. There is no money for rent, electricity or even food. She packs up the kids and goes to her parent's house telling Mark to get his act together before she will come home.
Then Mark makes a huge mistake, he borrows money from a loan shark and lies to Amy about where it came from but she goes back home with him. When the inevitable happens and Mark misses a repayment, things get really bad. The loan shark comes around and gives Mark a beating and an ultimatum. So he disappears, too scared to confront him again. This leaves Amy to wear the debt along with the ever growing interest. You can imagine what's involved here, its not pretty!
Things spiral downwards for Amy until she has lost everything including her self respect and almost her life. How low can you go? Very, very low apparently. There were few redeeming moments for her. Many people would have just killed themselves.
Did I enjoy it? I think its hard to enjoy a book that bleak. It was well written and I know it got glowing reviews from many readers but I'm sorry, I just couldn't get past the bleakness. I have to read something more uplifting now.
New author to me so with the label of "if you like Martina Cole you will love Mandasue Heller" still slapping me in the face every time I looked at the cover it was actually with some trepidation that I decided to read the book anyway. I am not a fan of Martina Cole you may have surmised.
Thankfully Mandasue Heller is nothing like Martina Cole. Her book was a lot easier to read for one thing and there was a pull to the characters that Cole for me doesn't achieve.
In Broke we are taken on the journey of a young couple in Manchester who marry and have kids too young and the addictions of gambling and heroin, one a choice the other forced upon the person to make them controllable.
A bit slow to start, Heller soon picks up the pace and sets off at a fast trot towards the finishing line and although I don't think I will be Heller's number one fan, these types of books are generally not my cup of tea but always willing to give things a go, I wouldn't snub her books either.
To say if you like Martina Cole you will love Mandasue Heller is a tad unfair to the author - Heller has her own style and will be pleasing to a multitude of those who don't enjoy Cole books as well - in fact this tag line may be a little offputting to those who don't like Cole and force them away from trying a well written, enjoyable story.
Althogh this is only a novel, it paints a graphic picture of the addictive effects of alcoholism and gambling, where vulnerable folk are preyed upon by unscrupulous loan sharks. While happy to forward a few hundred pounds, the lender knows full well that their victim is unlikely to be able to repay the loan. This provides a stranglehold on the victim and family, who become owned by the loan shark.
The book then portrays the awful steps taken to recover the money, which keeps racking up by extortionist amounts. Pressure is then applied in a brutal and disgusting manner, including forced addiction to drugs and worse, descriptions of which are too unpalatable for this review.
This story brings to mind the current proliferation of ‘Pay day Loans’ which are the legal side of this questionable service, and subject to much debate.
All in all, this is an interesting novel, which brings home the dark side of life for ordinary folk with financial problems, exacerbated by various forms of additive behaviour.
When I won a free copy of this from Goodreads first reads I was pleased as it was an introduction to an author I've never even heard of never mind read. However when I received it and read on the cover the line "If you like Martina Cole you'll love MandaSue Heller and I thought "Oooer" because I HAVE tried Martina Cole and absolutely loathed her writing!
Anyway we were setting off for a weekend away and I grabbed this book to take with me as it happened to be lying on the coffee table, and on the way there as I sat in the passenger seat, I got it out and began reading - just to see what it was about ... and I finished it in less than 24 hours, which is quite unusual for me as I'm quite a slow reader. Safe to say then that its a very easy read - but also that its a real page turner as I didn't get sidetracked or distracted and it kept me wanting to know what was going on.
It was very different from most of the books I read - the characters in it inhabit a world I'm not really that familiar with (thank goodness) and I must say right from the start that I absolutely detested nearly all the characters, in fact most of them I held in the greatest contempt - but thats no bad thing - they must have been realistic to engender such strong feelings.
It's basically the story of Amy and begins on her wedding day to the revolting and despicable Mark, who starts married life having a knee trembler up against a wall with a ginger slapper called Jenny whilst the hapless Amy goes into labour - during the reception! Sounds a bit like a sit com but life for this couple and their friends is far from humour filled. Married life with a new baby for this barely old enough to be called adults couple presents difficulties galore and even as a few years pass Mark doesn't mature much, he is an idle so and so, more interested in going to the pub with his mates than giving the kids a goodnight hug and more addicted to a trip to the bookies than to turning up for work. Pity he's not a bit more like his mate Steve who is the only character in the book I had some time for.
Amy's life revolves around her kids, stuck at home all day with 2 toddlers it has to but she's no yummy mummy - sinking into boredom and letting the housework slip. But when Mark loses all his wages at the bookies and gets sacked into the bargain the cracks in this pairs marriage really split asunder.
Turning to dodgy money lender Lenny Yates seems to him to be the only answer but when he ends up on the wrong side of him he scarpers and leaves Amy to face the music and this is where Amy's real nightmare begins.
OMG most of these characters really are low lives and I never realised I was such a snob until I began to cringe every time one of them spoke. I didn't manage to dredge up a great deal of sympathy for Amy even though what she ends up going through is truly horrible, she is just a rather pathetic character. Rape, drugs, prostitution, gun crime, homelessness are all every day words in the world of Lenny Yates and she gets forced into this world.
I'm not really sure what the appeal of this kind of book is, maybe it's seeing how the other half lives and appreciating your own situation more as a result, but it did make compelling reading, lots going on and well constructed. I'll certainly keep an eye open for more books by this author, which is after all what the first reads programme is all about, so thankyou Goodreads for my free copy.
I have mentioned in previous reviews that although I consider myself a fan, I don’t LOVE every MH book I read. Having said that her last book Lost Angel was absolutely brilliant. With that in my mind I was really looking forward to reading the new release Broke. The story centres on Amy who at a young age and with a baby on the way marries Mark. Within the first two chapters I had the urge to slap Amy around the face and ask her what she was playing at. The character Mark is an absolute idiot and one that I loathed from the very beginning. A few years later and with another child in tow Amy and Mark find themselves stuck in the doldrums. When Mark loses his job and his gambling gets out of hand he makes the major mistake of borrowing money from the local loan shark Lenny Yates.
From that point on the story takes a rather sinister and dark turn. Lenny Yates decides that Amy can pay off Mark’s debts his way. For fear of giving plot spoilers I don’t want to divulge any more of the story, but hence to say things are not particularly nice for Amy and her children. As Amy’s world takes a turn for the worse, her situation spirals and becomes almost unbelievable. The one thing I would say is that Mandasue touches on many subjects that are hard to deal with. Although Amy’s situation made me feel sympathetic towards her, I also felt irritated by her as a character. The fact that her life is all about Mark and nobody else grated on me, and at times it seemed like her children came second although at the end this seemed to have done a 360 degree turn? That was my only real bugbear about the book.
Other than that, the story drew me in and I went through quite a few emotions from pure rage at reading what characters were doing to sheer irritation at how stupid they can be! I managed to read this in just under 4 hours which is a record even by my standards. It’s certainly written in a way that makes you want to keep reading. Although I really liked this book her previous book Lost Angel was outstanding. That and the fact that Amy irritated me so much means it’s only a 4/5 read from me, but still a great read. Can’t wait for the next one.
It's been a while since I have read a Mandasue Heller book but I got stuck into this one and finished it within a couple of days.
It was very gritty, and certain parts were uncomfortable at times but it was well written and I was intrigued to know how things were going to turn out!
Broke is gritty and true to real life, the main character Amy was very believable and quite moving. When Amy's husband Mark gets deeper into debt and then turns to a loan shark Kenny Yates, obviously he does a runner after Yates gives him a beating. Then Yates abuses her and expects Amy to take on the debt, which she does as she has know choise in the matter, you could not help feeling for her especially when she spirals into drugs pushed on to her and the abuse she suffers. Once you start to read this book you cant put it down - you have been warned!
If when I wake up at 1am and the first thing I do is pick up a book and read until 3am, that book has gotta be a 5. Bloody brilliant! I hated that bastard Lenny Yates. I cringed every time his name appeared on a page. Mark was a waste of space, he could've had a wonderful life with Amy but threw it away. Jenny: ugly bitch, I wanted to punch her in the face! Marnie is a two faced slag and Amy should kick her to the kerb! Amy, poor, poor Amy. Unfortunately, shit like this does go on and there are too many Amy's around. I swear my blood pressure went up 30 points reading this book!
Broke is a cracking read with a terrific cast of characters. It's one of those books you find hard to put down as the need to know what happens next builds up. I've read and enjoyed all Mandasue's books and I think this is one of her best. Can't wait for the next book Respect.
Brief review on Amazon.co.uk. I could write a load of things but I would not do the book justice. The characters and places are brought to life through amazing descriptions.
I absolutely love Mandasue Heller and imo, she is by far, a better author than Martina Cole, all Coles characters are exactly the same as one another, even in different books, whereas Heller writes about many different things albeit in the same genre, if you see what I mean.
I have read all of her books and Broke is one of my faves, I felt so sad for the little kids in this book, and so angry at Mark & his evil girlfriend, Jenny, who also happened to be Lenny’s niece, I got annoyed a lot throughout the book because no one would believe Amanda, and they were all too ready to believe that Mark had turned his life around, and was suddenly the better parent?! Mmmn come on!
I felt like the story was from the 1980s because of the some of the stuff that happened, and infact it was a story from the 21st century!
If you are not really into Cole, then you’ll absolutely love Heller, I know I do!
I’m eagerly awaiting her new book Brutal, which is due to be on sale in March 2019, it’s the only book of hers that I haven’t yet read, I’m sure it will be great, like all her other books!

My Review
I think I along with all the other fans waited patiently, or impatiently, for this book. I love Mandasue Heller's writing and she hasn't disappointed in this book.
The book starts jumping right into the story, Amy is pregnant and celebrating her wedding day with her another blue wicked, this is my favorite drink so I loved this wee add-in, when her waters break and everything kicks off. The story then jumps a few years later and Amy and Mark are about to have their lives turned upside down when a money lender comes to collect and Mark leaves Amy to face it. What follows is drugs, prostitution, abuse, heartache and betrayal, this book has everything!
I haven't had a great run with books lately as when your studying and reading academic work I think it is hard to get into fiction as you normally would and worried books had been ruined for me. Heller has flung me back into my love of fiction and provided a much needed break from reality. Had it not been for the demands of work and study I would have devoured this in one sitting.
The characters put you through your paces, I went through disliking Amy, to hating her, liking her, hating her, feeling sorry for her and back full circle. Mark I disliked from the off and I won't even start on Jenny as it would evoke spoilers which I hate. You get totally swept up in the drama and can't put it down.
It is nitty, gritty and some of the writing makes you uneasy however this is what makes a fantastic crime writer, she draws you into the belly of the under world of drugs, money, sex and paints a very dark, depraved and realistic picture. I loved this book, 5/5 - I would recommend it to any one looking for a Martina Cole crime type style and who isn't easily offended.
Thanks so much to Hodder & Stoughton Publishers for providing me with this ARC, you can get your own copy from all good retailers from the 31st of January 2013, paperback for £12.99
I had preordered Broke & couldn't wait to get started, I was not disappointed. Gripping opening chapter with great characters. It's starts off at the wedding of the main character Amy, but don't be fooled into thinking her life was going to be happy ever after & plain sailing, in true Mandasue Heller style there are so many twist, turns & shocks in store as her Amy's life spirals out of control, & the people close to her let her down, struggling as she tries to get back on track. Another truly brilliant book from Mandasue Heller, a gripping & at times heartbreaking read.
This book was captivating from the start, and I pretty much read it in one sitting. What started off as an introduction to the author soon turned into a very gritty, enthralling read. Parts of it were really difficult to read, and there was a lot of violence, particularly in the scenes between Amy and Lenny which were gruesome at times. I liked the ending of the book, which.I wasn't expecting, and found it very well written. I'd like to thank the publishers for my free copy, and I'm looking forward to reading more by Mandasue Heller!
One of the best books I have read in ages. Gripping I couldn't put it down from start to finish. Very realistic story of drugs alcoholism and gambling. Its about Amy and Mark both married at 16. Years later and 2 kids later. Mark borrowed money from a lender. But he couldn't pay it back. Mark disappeared and met up with woman he slept with on his wedding day. and Amy had to take the fall from the lender. This tells of Amy and her harrowing ordeal and what she went through to pay it back. Very good cant wait to try some of her other books.
An authentic insight into how poverty can & does influence the choices people have. A thought provoking novel that drew me into the vulnerability of Amy & her children. The self obsessed husband Mark who manipulates, the vile perpetrator Yates who abuses & the tender loving care of Kelvin the rescuer. The moral of this story is don't judge the behaviour of others, judge what others have done to them.
One of the best books iv read in ages , i always enjoy her books Amy is pregnant at 15 married at 16, but her husband cant hold down a job and is addicted to gambling, when he looses his job he turns to a loan shark, but the payments are hard to keep up so he does a runner leaving amy to face the music, the shark rapes her gets her hooked on drugs then makes her sell her body,
TRUELLY AMAZING BOOK , ONCE YOU START YOU JUST CANT PUT IT DOWN

4½ stars This was another great book from Mandasue Heller. I've yet to read any of her books and be disappointed. The story had the usual mix if good and some very unpleasant characters in just the right mix.
loved it fantastic book - be prepared for slightly uncomfortable reading at points it really is quite a traumatic story - this book will have you up all night turning the pages
