Genesis provides us with a foundation for correctly understanding the world. Within Genesis, the character and the role of human beings within the world God has created is revealed. In reading Genesis we find on every occasion, in his dealings with mankind, God steps in by his grace and demonstrates that he is in control.
Dr. Belcher is the Professor of Old Testament. He is an ordained minister in the PCA and pastored an urban nondenominational church in Rochester, NY for ten years before pursuing the Ph. D. This pastoral experience in an unusual and challenging setting gives him great insight into the practical, modern issues that will be faced by future pastors studying with him at RTS. He graduated from Covenant College and received his M. Div from Covenant Seminary. He also received an S.T.M. from Concordia Theological Seminary, and his Ph. D. is from Westminster Theological Seminary. He has served as stated supply for numerous churches in the area since coming to RTS Charlotte in 1995.
A solid Reformed commentary that's especially valuable for prep for teaching in the context of the local church. Belcher packs a lot of material into pretty short compass, but for preaching or more in-depth teaching you'll want something more substantial.
Helpful for understanding Genesis as I worked through the book in my quiet times. This book is divided into chapters rather than individual verses making it a smoother read. Not overly technical although Belcher goes into the Hebrew at some points. Belcher explores lots of the NT references to Genesis as he walks through the book. Personally, I would have liked more application as well as typology- discussions around how the characters and stories of Genesis point forward to Christ and His Kingdom.
I read this commentary as I am teaching through Genesis this upcoming semester. This was a great commentary: not technical but a very capable scholar gives a brief comment about most of the more complex ideas under the study of Genesis. Toward the end, a bit too much of the commentary became summaries of the text, but a solid laymen commentary on an amazing book!
Good book, not great. I would use it for small group study, but not for serious academic work. I also take issue with the amount of time and the specific position taken on the earliest chapters of Genesis.
