Rate this book
After being abused by her stepfather from the age of six, and put on the street by her boyfriend at the age of fifteen, Star uses her experience to become a top escort in London with a lucrative sideline in Bondage and Discipline. However, a wrong move lands her in Siberia as the unwilling leading light in a series of extreme S&M films.

Refusing to give in to fear, Star fights back. She ruins productions by laughing at the Master, makes herself pass out at critical moments, and finally drives her captors to present her as a gift to Alexei, a prison officer who is feared throughout the state.

Star quickly discovers Alexei has a penchant kinky sex that he expects her to satisfy. What she can't decide is if he is her rescuer, or if she is in worse trouble than before. All Star knows for certain is that the seemingly unending supply of chocolates Alexei rewards her with hide a secret even darker than her own past.

Chocolate is a fun fast read with a feisty heroine and a dark hero with a soft center.

Who doesn't love chocolate! Great story based in Russia with chocolate, sex, and healing. Chocolate tells us the story of how Alexei and Frances Emily Jones (aka Star) fall in love. This is not your normal love at first sight, happy ever after. While some may not like Alexei's methods (if happening to them), they worked really well for Star. Normally when I read romance books, I picture myself as the heroine (if you are honest - who doesn't?), but my life and circumstances do not relate to Star's - maybe that is why Alexei didn't seem offensive to me.

And now, a bit about the story... Star has worked in the sex trade from a young age - her step father started abusing her at 6 and her mother kicked her out when she was 14 - prostitute, porn star, sub, etc. She made her way across Europe from London to Russia as a result and finds herself in a very bad situation. Alexei rescues her and uses his special talents to gain her trust. His special talents come from working as an information gatherer for the Russian government. If you want to learn his secrets, give this book a try! Star's reaction to his secrets is not your typical romance storyline - so I enjoyed that this book was different.

I do not normally read erotic novellas or novels. I also have no other mild or extreme BDSM novels in my 'READ' folder, neither in print nor in e-reader format. So this book was an introduction to the genre for me.
I was enthralled with the character development. The antihero Alexei and his seeming conquest Star were both interesting in their backgrounds. How they got to where they are was thoughtful and plausible. I enjoyed the descriptions of the sexual play and discovery of one another as the plot developed.

Unfortunately the plot was thin and only late showed a secondary thread. So the overall story was disappointingly thin. Alexei was clear in his internal insistence that Star was going to >ahem< star in his life in some way. It was clear he saw her "employers" as a vehicle to do his job, whatever it is.

What was unclear was just WHY she was a necessary vehicle for him to bring down the filmmakers. Or even if bringing them down at all was his goal. Early on in the story he was glad he found her and seemed to see her as a necessary piece he was missing in his life. But other than the "oops, I've gone and fallen in love with my sexual 'prisoner' " storyline, >yawn< I wasn't ever really made aware of what interest he saw in her. Sure she showed spunk and stood out in some way to him but, to me, it wasn't a fleshed out part of the story.

I also do not enjoy the inference that this English girl could effectively communicate with anyone with easy fluidity when EVERYONE around her was Russian. The language barrier was clear in the opening but barely a mention later. The author seemed to realize that too and had a subplot character deliver language tapes to help her out.

So the story moved. It was never boring. The characters were fun. The sex was descriptive. The plot, such as it was, is aimed at men. The hokey cockney accent of Star was only slightly distracting. I would've enjoyed more a development in the whys of the story:
Why her?
Why did he choose her to begin with?
Why did the men try to locate Alexei through the filmmakers. Or moreover how did they know to look for him through the filmmakers?
Why did Alexei see her as a redemptive figure in his sordid life?
What did the sexual toys have to do with Alexei's life other than as little used props? I mean, are they representative of what he WAS and no longer IS?

Anyway. It's an easy read, fun and not hard to get through. It's a welcome respite fro. The days bad news on tv. Go read it. You'll enjoy the vacation from reality.

Chocolate ~ An Erotic Romance in Siberia was a different type of romance story. It started with a rescue of Star. She had been abused so badly both physically and emotionally that Alexei gave her time to heal before even touching her. The use of chocolate gave her comfort, a way to find her way back from the dark place she was in from the abuse and gave her incentive to improve to gain the reward of a piece of chocolate.

Alexei used many techniques to gain her trust and finally her love. He kept the dark side of his work from her as much as possible but when it finally can to light she had to deal with the reality of his tough side or decide to leave.

Star's emotions were first written as Alexei perceived them as he manipulated her toward her recovery. It gave an interesting point of view and as she started thinking for herself the two merged perfectly to keep the story flowing. I enjoy an unusual love story with lots of twists along the way, so this one I found very much to my tastes. It has a dark side that might bother the faint of heart but the love was pure for the two damaged characters for an excellent story.

Storm Chase definitely knows how to captivate a reader and immerse them in her stories. This fast paced erotic story is a page turner and ends before you even feel like you read ten pages. As with all of her books the storyline and characters are well developed. Hope to read many, many more books from this author.
