Shadows Over Sheradan is an epic fantasy adventure.
Tasked with bringing Izzasha the Betrayer to justice by the Solarin ruler King Dershai, Prince Trigarius pursues her relentlessly. Izzasha’s trail leads the prince deep into the crystal Rings of Zalaghorn, where shadow creatures from another plane of existence have lain dormant for centuries, undisturbed.
When an ancient seal is accidentally broken deep within a cavern on a remote asteroid, a deadly awakening is unleashed. If Trigarius and his team cannot stop the shadows in time, the world of Sheradan may be lost forever.
Scott Barker was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He holds Bachelor degrees in French Literature and Education as well as a Masters degree in Education. In addition to being a full time high school teacher, department head, and father of two, he has always found time for creative writing and storytelling. The plot of Shadows Over Sheradan takes place on a fantasy world that the author has been developing for nearly three decades. He lives with his lovely wife and two young children near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
The world that Scott Barker created is amazing. I love how he drew me into his world and everything made sense. There wasn't a moment where I thought something was stretched beyond my ability to believe, which I think is the sign of a highly talented fantasy author.
The adventure is riveting with clear action scenes and a true sense of peril for the heroes. Prince Trigarius does come off a little Superman-like with a wide variety of abilities, but there is a surprising level of vulnerability for someone so powerful. This comes from the connection he shares with the other characters, which you really feel through the book.
The only nitpick that I had with this book is the sudden exposition that is used. This was mostly in the first act of the book where the characters were being set up. The scene would be playing out and there would be a sudden jump to a story or explanation. It created a stuttering of pace for me, which took me some time to adapt to.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone that loves unique worlds, colorful characters (loved G'Kota), and high fantasy adventure.
I'll be buying it tomorrow (01/12/2012) and with any luck should have time to do a proper review sometime after I've read it (which shouldn't take too long, I hope.)
