Good nonfiction book of space travel and what is needed to travel in space.

Opening: “Today we will read a book that teaches us how space vehicles fly to outer space. Let’s look at the Table of Contents. [Teacher shows the page.] Here we see how the book is laid out. There is a page number listed for each topic in the book. You can see we will learn a lot of new information in this book. Let’s start by looking for a fun fact from page 29. [Teacher turns to the page and reads the first fun fact.] Have any of you seen a picture of a space shuttle? [Teacher waits for responses.] Now, let’s go back to the beginning and find out how these vehicles get to outer space.”
Opening moves: helps children understand organization of book, models using table of contents, alerts reader it will be an informational book, engages attention
Rationale: I chose this book to go with the theme of outer space. I wanted to include a non-fiction book in the set. I felt the language would be easy for first graders to comprehend. I also thought the full color photos included in the book would be very interesting for the students.
