So incredibly informative. Some skimmable parts near the end, and places where I would've liked to see more citations -- but overall a very valuable read that I was able to apply and benefit from right away.

This book brought back memories of the strict middle school chorus teacher who taught a lot of this--she would scold us for whispering because it's not good for the vocal cords; explained diphthongs and diagrams of the throat. After having done a series of lessons with a singing teacher in 2019 and learning to feel the soundmakers of my body while harnessing the breath and shaping the sound, I understand the concepts of both those old familiar middle school topics and the new information presented in this book more intuitively.

I hadn't before been able to connect with phrases like "pulling the sound from the core" of your body, but having been able to successfully do it with training and solo practice, and know intimately what it feels like in the body to do it, I can read the mechanics of what the author says about the lungs and the ribs and breath control and opening the throat and put the steps together to produce the clear, crisp, and resonant sound she describes.

All this is me trying to say that Lyle took what I have been working on intuitively based on my fuzzy memories of prior vocal training and has crystalized it with terminology and diagrams and historically helpful exercises for improving. So I really liked it!

I didn’t agree with all of the points made in this book (like forcing the tongue to stay against the tip of the bottom teeth), but there were a lot of useful exercises and tools that I will be incorporating into lessons. I also enjoyed the section on chants—I will definitely be playing with those.
