Written by Peter Joyce, who is a current criminology lecturer and a leading researcher, Criminology - The Essentials is designed to give you everything you need to succeed, all in one place. It covers the key areas that students are expected to be confident in, outlining the basics in clear jargon-free English, and then providing added-value features like summaries of key books, and even lists of questions you might be asked in your seminar or exam
A good introductory book to the subject for 15 out of the 20 chapters. However in the final five chapters the author rather spoils his work by including both personal beliefs and unsubstantiated claims. A good book to start with but the reader should be aware of presumptions from the author which permeate the content.
This work is a cursory basic introduction to the field of criminology for self-study. The book was written and published in England and is so slanted toward the British system. Numerous references are given throughout.
