Tony Perez is one of the literary influences of my favorite local author, Edgar Calabia Samar. A couple of decades ago I was able to read Cubao Pagkagat ng Dilim: Mga Kuwentong Kababalaghan and I remember liking some of its stories but not enough to push shove this book to my elder brother. The stories are basically paranormal in nature. Once I've read a paranormal book, there is no motivation for me to read it again. Well, of course, if you are a fan of paranormal nature in Tagalog, go for this book. Samar is a big fan of Tony Perez and I have a huge respect for Sir Egay (Samar). So, I thought I should give Tony Perez's books a second chance.

Si Crispin tells the story of what happened to the young Crispin who in Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) (5 stars) is maltreated by a sakristan mayor. When he is asked to run from his life, he is said to have been shot. But nobody made sure what happened after the shots are fired. In the story, Crispin is a lonely boy because he has just been separated from his mother Sisa and older brother Basilio. He seeks the help of an old couple, husband and wife in the province. The couple and their children seemed to me as strange for provincial people as they are straight, non-nonsense talks and they speak and pray the Latin. Some of those prayers are part of the oracion for the dead and sounded like some melancholic lamentations for the spirits of netherworld.

The appearance of Dr. Jose Rizal as Pepe and the husband of Sisa is a surprise treat. It is a deviation from the story in Noli where the husband of Sisa is Pedro, the drunkard and a pathetic man. Here, Rizal is the father and Crispin is very proud of him as he has inherited his literary skills from him. There is also the appearance of Ibarra who later turned into Simoun. They are the best characters in this book because you would easily remember these characters from reading your Noli and Fili when you were very young. The only interesting new character is Damian the mysterious boy who first threw bolos to the angry friend and then later a ball of fire.

Perez's storytelling is concise and straightforward. He has no frills and he tried to make sure that he "sounded" like Rizal in El Filibusterismo (5 stars). I am not sure if Tony Perez writes in this mood but he will surely make you remember the last time you read Fili if not Noli too.

Overall, not really a bad book.

At iba't ibang mga what if's na kuwento. O what if ako na yung magsulat ng mga yun? Haha!

"Si Crispin" is part alterna history-part meta-part speculative fiction. Did Perez pull it off successfully? Mostly. I like how the author tapped into the lore of local ritual magic.
