It's been a year Laura Walcutt would just as soon forget — especially since she broke up with her boyfriend and lost her lifeguard job at the Springwood municipal pool… Great.
No boyfriend. And now no job.
Luckily, Laura bumps into a classmate who works at the local hospital, and he thinks he can arrange an interview for Laura.
The boy is new in town, and Laura likes his easy smile and dark eyes. Best of all, he isn't anything like her ex-boyfriend Chester. He seems to like her, too. Laura realizes that it may not be such a bad summer after all.
But when a killer goes on a bloody rampage, Laura must confront her worst fears and suspicions about the new boy in town.
Is he Laura's dream come true? Or is he her worst nightmare?
Laura is desperate for a job, but isn't having any luck. While at the hospital applying for a position, she learns the job has been taken, but hits it off with Buck Lochner, the new boy in town who works there. However, his behaviour is a little off. Laura is also dealing with an ex, Chester, who is still obsessed with her. And her friend Doug seems to dig her too! Then people start to die. Who could be behind it?
Another fairly decent entry in this series, with a few gruesome murders and a couple of interesting plot turns. I'd have actually preferred these books if Freddy Krueger had only book-ended them as a narrator, rather than being the reason behind the mayhem each time. David Bergantino is able to come up with good storylines for these books, so I'd like to see what he's capable of when not bound the publisher's apparent mandate to have Freddy Krueger be the villain for each book. Of course, at 150 page, it's far too short to have much impact, but it's still a fun horror story.
I like how the author adapted to make sure that the killer won't be easier to predict this time. Freddy's MO has been exposed in the previous books - at least to us, the readers, and not to his unfortunate potential victims.
Laura has a huge problem, and it's not just about finding a job (hence the title) that she doesn't really need. She has two alpha guys fighting over her, and between an ex and a prospective bf who sadly blew his chances, she has had enough of men who can't control their aggression, impulsiveness, and obsession. As luck would have it, she still has another paramour waiting in the wings. And now a killer is mowing down people who are close to her, whether they're friends or antagonists. She has to figure out exactly what's happening before the axe falls on her neck.
Like the others in the series, this was a very quick read with a neat resolution. The books' epilogues were also entertaining if expectedly gory, always taking place in Freddy's infamous boiler room where he details the bloodily creative ways he's punishing his victims in aeternum.
Snippet: Another quality Tale of Terror, and this time the title actually makes sense! I thought Laura was a great heroine for the most part, but she definitely lost me towards the end a bit. Although we spent little time with most of the side characters, each one felt quite distinct and had their own traits. I liked that most of them were antagonists in some way too, which made it harder to guess who was doing the murdering...

This was pretty bad. The series was so promising with the first two books. Since it's really hard/expensive to find numbers three and four of the series, I'll probably never resd them. I know I read Twice Burned before and liking it, but this was just bad.
Great god what a terrible book. I thought it would at least have Freddy in it, and it finally did in the last 10 pages of the book. But really, what was I expecting?
I guess there was a series of these books in the mid 90s, Freddy Krueger's Tales of Terror. This one had a hot pink (maybe it was originally red 20 years ago) cover, and at 140 pages it looked like a teen romance book, which it almost was. I can't see what kind of market they were aiming at here.
I read almost the whole thing while waiting for my girlfriend during her doctor's appointment. I will probably not be reading another one.
