Heidi Butzine goes into great detail about the pros and cons to shopping at your local businesses versus the big conglomerates like Wal-Mart or Costco. By shopping locally you are helping boost your local economy which also helps small business owners. I personally shop at local, businesses because I like to support the people of my community in their small business. Heidi goes into ideas and tips on how you can support your communities small businesses.
I felt I could relate to all her advice, since we are from the same part of town. It's so sad when you see local small town restaurants or shops that are taken down and replaced with national chains. How can they compete when the chains win every time? With the recession still hanging over all of our heads, you can imagine how rough it is on a privately owned shop. We should all do our part and support them so our favorite shops stay in business.
This was an enlightening and fun book to read that gave me great insight into a great concept that everyone should be learning about. I think that this book should be read by everyone, to fully understand where your money goes when you spend it at franchise versus a local shop. I give this book 5/5!
Shop Local by Heidi Butzine is quite enlightening short read that this very informative in regards to shopping local and feeding money directly back into the community. Shop Local opens my eyes and hopefully others in why it is important to shop local. Not only does Butzine give us the reasoning for shopping local, she also provides statistics to back up her claim on how shopping local directly affects the community in which we live. No she does go hard on big corporations throughout the book but this only reinforces her points on the benefits of shopping local. As Heidi implies we need to really support our community, by doing so we support our immediate economy as well.
Shop Local is not only full of statistics it has a lot of nice graphics, charts and pull outs sporadically placed in some of its chapters. I believe this helped move the information along; when Butzine made reading for lack of better words interactive. As I will not implement all of her recommendations I am quite thankful that she laid quite a few instructions on how to shop local while not breaking the bank to do so.
