Koji Seo (瀬尾 公治) is a Japanese manga creator from Shobara, Hiroshima, Japan.
He debuted in 1996 with the one-shot HALF & HALF in Magazine Fresh. His two hits, Suzuka and Cross Over, both mixed the genres of sports with high school romance. Suzuka focused on track and field while Cross Over used basketball. He was an assistant to Tsukasa Ōshima, and respects Fujiko F. Fujio and Masahito Soda. In 2009 he designed the High School Girl Kimchi for Hokubi Construction food company.
He has stated in an interview that he was a member of his high school's track and field team and that he loves to watch baseball both emphasized in his hit manga Suzuka.
Yamato is still in love with Suzuka but she turned him down flat. What's a guy who joined the track team just for a girl to do? Just when he starts to think on it his old friend Honoka throws a wrench in the works. She kisses him!
As Yamato still tries to understand Suzuka, he is suddenly enchanted by the girl named Honoka whom Yamato knew from years before. As Honoka increases her advances to gain Yamato's love, how far will they go while Suzuka knows about their hanging out together?
"Suzuka" volume 5 briefly shows the sports angle of the story in which Suzuka earns a respectable place in the school sports event. As a result, her team decides to celebrate her success by arranging a trip for them all to go to Hiroshima, which just so happens to be Yamato's home area. While they all enjoy themselves at the hotel/inn and its hot springs, Honoka finds ample opportunities to become even closer with Yamato.
The majority of this volume focuses on Yamato's relationship with Honoka, as well as how he compares her with Suzuka. Some scenes can be slightly heartbreaking depending on the viewpoint of the reader; whether Yamato's actions are acceptable or not is debatable. Either way, Suzuka does not take this very well and gets visibly angrier at Yamato every time she notices him interacting with Honoka.
Yet again the artwork is brilliant. Characters are drawn in very attractive designs consistent with the previous volumes, and high quality background art is seen. I especially like the drawings in the background of Hiroshima as well as the buildings and fields, all of which are fairly high detail.
"Suzuka" volume 5 is an interesting continuation of the rom-com part of the story, digging deeper into Honoka's intentions and showing Yamato's more confident side. This volume is for mature readers only due to nudity and some explicit language.
Suzuka: Volume 5 is another fun book where most of it takes place at a track meet. And, get this, Yamoto actually gets a girlfriend in this book. Well, we have seen that coming for a long ti . . . wait a cotton, pickin' minute! Hey, that's not Asahina. That is Honaka, the girl that has been in love with Yamoto for years. Say, this is a twist I didn't see coming. Isn't this series entitled "Suzuka?" Isn't Yamoto supposed to be dating Asahina Suzuka? Hmmm . . . this must be another ploy by Koluji Seo to keep his faithful readers waiting, and waiting, and waiting for what we know must eventually happen. I just feel bad for Honaka. She is going to get her heart broke when Yamoto dumps her for Asahina. Maybe she will see that he truly isn't in love with her, but with another girl and dump him.
The story in this volume is great, but I wanted Yamoto to make progress with Asahina, not Honaka, although, she is cute too. And she has a much nicer personality than Asahina.
As for the Adaptation and Translation from Japanese to English, it is very well done. The dialog flows very well.
The artwork is absolutely wonderful. It is what I picture great manga to be.
Overall, Suzuka: Volume 5 is another excellent book in a series I just cannot seem to put down. All I can say is, "Wow! I love it!" Now that Asahina has decided to spend an extra night in Hiroshima with Yamoto, I wonder what will happen? I guess I will have to read Suzuka: Volume 6 to find out. I look forward to it.
