Yamato used to have a big crush on Suzuka, a gorgeous track star. But even though he’s now dating someone else–cute girl-next-door, Honoka–he can’t get his mind off his former flame. He has a good thing going with Honoka, but can she help him forget Suzuka?
Koji Seo (瀬尾 公治) is a Japanese manga creator from Shobara, Hiroshima, Japan.
He debuted in 1996 with the one-shot HALF & HALF in Magazine Fresh. His two hits, Suzuka and Cross Over, both mixed the genres of sports with high school romance. Suzuka focused on track and field while Cross Over used basketball. He was an assistant to Tsukasa Ōshima, and respects Fujiko F. Fujio and Masahito Soda. In 2009 he designed the High School Girl Kimchi for Hokubi Construction food company.
He has stated in an interview that he was a member of his high school's track and field team and that he loves to watch baseball both emphasized in his hit manga Suzuka.
It's official: Yamato and Honoka are in love. And although Suzuka seems to be unmoved by them together, she seems troubled by this turn of events. Still, she supports their relationship and tries to help Yamato make Honoka happy. How long will this love last?
In "Suzuka" Volume 6, readers will begin to notice the title character's mood swings to be a tad one-dimensional at this point. With the sports part of the story completely taking a back seat here, the focus is on Suzuka always belittling Yamato by making him look stupid each time they interact, perhaps slightly more so than the previous entries.
On the other hand, we get to see more of the blossoming relationship of Yamato and Honoka. There is even a new character introduced to the story named Nana, who is a friend of Honoka's and also a celebrity in-universe. Although not too much is revealed about her, Nana is more intelligent than she appears and even provides Yamato with helpful tips on how to care for Honoka.
The art style in this volume is practically as good as the previous ones, especially the background art. This time around, readers will get to see very accurate and realistic drawings of the Shinjuku train station and shopping districts. The character art seems to be of slightly less quality than before, but only just a little. Also, this volume is the beginning of an amusing little bonus manga at the end called Suzuka-mon, which is a parody of another Japanese manga called Doraemon which is about a cat with magic pockets. Suzuka-mon hilariously depicts the normally serious Suzuka with absurd-looking plush cat paws, ears, and tail.
Although noticeably shorter and of less significance to the story than previous volumes, "Suzuka" Volume 6 is still a solid entry to this wonderful rom-com manga. Not only do readers get to witness Yamato's character growth with regards to his love life, but we also get some deeper hints here and there about Honoka's personality. Current fans of this manga will not be disappointed!
Suzuka: Volume 6 is continues the drama of two people who love each other who are not together. If only Asahina would admit to both herself and Yamoto she she is also in love with him, all would be right in the world. But she continues to deny what she knows to be true. This will only lead to heartbreak for both Honaka and Asahina. Yamoto will soon come to realize that he can no longer data Honaka because he really is only in love Asahina. So, Honaka will be hurt. In the mean time, Asahina is being hurt because she is watching Honaka with Yamoto wishing it was her with him. Oh, what a mess this has become.
As for the story, I did enjoy it a lot, but I sure wish Yamoto hadn't started dating Honaka. He is just lying to himself if he thinks this is going to work out. He isn't in love with her, even though he told Honaka that he was.
The artwork is wonderful once again. I really like the way Kouji Seo draws.
The Translation and Adaptation from Japanese to English works really well. I sure wish that David Ury worked on more manga titles. I know of one translator he run circles around.
Overall, Suzuka: Volume 6 is a great addition to one humdinger of a series. I wonder what will happen in Suzuka: Volume 7 now that Honaka has seen Yamoto out shopping with Asahina, even though she doesn't know it is for her own birthday? I guess I need to start reading to find out the answer.
