I used this curriculum for homeschooling; my kids used this volume for most of 3rd grade (ages 8 & 10) - it went very well, and provided an excellent suggested reading list for them, with a lot of variety, but some real "must-reads" for all kids. Easily modifiable to the individual needs of my kids. Highly recommended!

This book takes the lessons from the previous book a step further. This time instead of asking questions for comprehension there is a brief narration. The copy work is expanded to include dictation. I think this format is wonderful, though a parent could just as easily come up with a similar curriculum.

That being said, I find the writing lines much to big for a second grader. The lines are the same oversized ones from the first book. I prefer to use separate paper, especially the incarnations may not even fit on the page.

On the plus side, the student is encouraged to sum the story up, coming up with important details from the story. This will certainly help a student focus on what the important parts of the story really are and what details can be forgotten in retelling. It's about organizing thoughts.
