Titulo: Outside the Wire
Autor: Richard Farnsworth
Motivo de lectura: Letras Macabras (Isla Macabra 2023)
Lectura / Relectura: Lectura
Mi edicion: Electronico
Puntuacion: 3/5

Excellent writing, interesting stories, each could have been made into a whole book. In fact it made me want to read more werewolf and monster stories asap.

Richard Farnsworth presents us with a collection of short stories in Outside The Wire. Two of these are just snippets of larger stories, Succumbing To Gravity (everyone who knows me, knows I will force you to read this book), and Gift Of The Bouda. Both of which show how well Farnsworth can write the internal struggle.

I found all of the other short stories just as engaging as Richard’s previous works. One story, B.E.K.s is about ??? The writer created some terrifying creatures. Who, or what, they are remain a mystery to the reader and the characters in the story. In other stories, it’s same with the mysterious creations. The Sacrifices Of Automated Tabulation a woman starts a new job, only to find out things are not what they seem.

The Long Road To Sanctum feels familiar. The rules and aspects of the story seem to coincide with the were-creatures of Gift Of The Bouda.

I absolutely love Farnsworth’s gift for writing the dilemma of the internal struggle, and he showcases the highlights of this in Dougies’s Hand. The story is about a young man with an uncontrolled hand, which reminded me of Idle Hands, or the fight Ash puts up in Evil Dead.

The last story of the collection, Virtual Huntress, brings the horrors of the very possible to light. I think I’ve already stated this a million times, but the real monsters are always the scariest.

Richard Farnsworth has proved yet again, whatever genre, or path he takes in his writing, he will always have my attention.

This short novella to this awesome author's writings Is a shocking short 66 page of delightful morbid horror stories about fallen angels, demons, lycanthropes, monsters and a disembodied hand (or is it), it is a collection of six previously published short stories about things we don’t want to let in, all anthologized for your reading pleasure. This is the introduction from the author himself.

Reading these tales sent spine tingling chills up my back and my theeth chatting as each story described interesting characters and their dilemmas they all encounter and the conclusion of each story took this reader's breath away.

This author has a natural talent to weave words into descriptive stories that pulls in the reader and make them lose themselves in the plot; the style of writing with details keeps the reader's interest and savor each word knowing the tale will end too soon. It is short but very entertaining horror taunt, a teaser to some of his full published books available in the market and as ebooks on the internet.

He is professional that he gives the reader a glimpse in his introduction into each of the story so there is no confusion just delightful reading that ends to quickly and compels the reader to Goggle this author's other works to continue the addiction to the dark and bizarre tales. He varies with his topics; so the reader can take a break and move into the next story and be satisfied with a different conculsion. It has wit and surprises in each story. He has won many adwards for horror and fiction writing and he deserves them.

from the first story in this compelling teaser of dark wicked strange tales;

Succumbing to Gravity

"It stood taller and broader than me. Great leathery wings stretched out from the
second set of scapulas. One wing in the hall, the other reached back into the room. The smoky gray skin was thick and covered in oozing boils where the ancient words had been written. It turned to me and paused, the eyes were dead, the pupils blown. The skin of the lower face had torn away and the yellow-white mandible shown through.

“Araqiêl? Is that you, little brother?” His voice rasped like a file being pulled across
a steel pipe."

This is one teaser of the above story; does it made you want to explore further about this creative witty author with a dark sense of humor that leaves you scared and laughing at the same time. Highly recommend this flash fiction at it's best and his other books all available at Amazon.com and Smashwords.com and other fine retailers.

These stories were all very interesting, I enjoyed them even though some of them were a little out there and no I would not want to let them in. They are all well written showing the author can really get into the turmoil that each main character faces. I look forward to seeing more of his work.

A fun anthology:

“Succumbing to Gravity” - **** - I really like this one.

“Gift of the Bouda” - ***** - Again, a really good and fun story.

“The Long Road to Sanctum” - *** - Entertaining, but it really needed to be fleshed out. Plus a lone WereBear against a hungry pack of WereWolves? Just not convinced he could have survived.

“B.E.K.s” - **** - Really good, loved it!

“Sacrifices of Automatic Tabulation” - ** - Too bad, I love steam-punk; but this one just didn’t ring my chimes.

“Dougie's Hand” - *** - Again, just didn’t really care for it.

“Virtual Huntress” - ***** - Wow, I love it! I can see this happening.

So overall a solid 4 and I have to get more from Mr. Farnsworth
