Stone Rose

15 people get hit in the head and conveniently lose consciousness in every Megan Derr novel I have read. She's got a great imagination, but lord has she seen too many American action movies...

I just finished reading it, and I must say I am completely horrified by how low this book is for Megan Derr's usual level. In this book you will find that the main character is 'blind', and basically he spends the whole book moaning about how he cannot do anything. It made me a bit angry, because I know blind people and they are not completely helpless!! And even if this Prince were... do not tell me that after spending all his life without being able to use his eyes, he wouldn't have adapted somehow? Why doesn't he use a cane? Or the snake could guide him? This little detail kept making the story completely unrealistic and it basically ruined it for me. Sometimes you will see other characters telling him how many steps in a room so that he is not lost, but he is still completely useless everywhere else. And he loves playing victim. They kept talking about his "hard past" but the reader does not see anything too dramatic and, honestly, it is very hard to pity him.
Then there is the threesome. I will not make spoilers, but let's just say that they kept talking about how they will never be able to replace a member of their triad, but in the end... they do, and pretty quickly! Also, it seems as though they cannot act as a normal pairing, they need a third member in their relationship or it fails? I would have liked a bit more explanation about why they have to include a third member, because if they miss the other one so much... perhaps it would have made more sense if they had gone on as only two?
Another little detail is that the Prince is supposedly shy and reserved (because of that "difficult past")...but he seduces men with lots of confidence and ease.
In conclusion: this book is not worth the price I paid for it. I would have paid half the price gladly, because from time to time I do enjoy to read bad literature, but not $6! It is one of Megan Derr's worse books, she has written better literature than this. I think she was just not inspired in this book.
Then there is the threesome. What is with MD's books and editing? Silly little things, really, but the sheer amount of them takes away from the story, no matter how good.
I think every single person in this book save the king and the snake had gotten hit in the head at one point or another. Even poor Culebra, blind as he was, experienced the world going dark (or black, don't remember 100% now). True story, says so in the book!
Other than that, pretty good stuff. 3.75 stars :)

As with all of these there are the kinds of typos spell-check won't catch and some line-edit fails. Luckily the story's just as good as #1 & #2, and I already bought the last two in the series. There's a flaw in the plot, but not an important one. I really appreciated the relationship caveat at the end, so I'll call it even. :)

Oh. I was so looking forward to this one and it was worth the wait. Culebra is the incarnation of the Lost God, Basilisk. But, now one of the Roses has him in their hands and the fate of the world rests in the hands of the lover he drove away; the Captain who comforted him, his kidnapper and his kidnapper’s closest friend.
A great re-written story based on the original blog story. The story-line may have changed, but the plot is still the same (well with one added addition). Culebra is still reeling from the shock and horror of listening to one of his lovers being killed by mermaids and driving his other lover away. When he gets a visit from Captain Midori (now a Lord), he begins to think he might be able to put the past behind him. Cortez is given little choice in the matter of kidnapping the Basilisk Prince and it leads to an outcome that nobody could have foretold. Dario was pushed away by Culebra after the death of Dario’s brother. Now, he has been kidnapped to force the prince to do as he is told. Fidel has also been kidnapped, as a way to force Cortez to do as the cult wants. Now, as they all come together, the actions of a few have terrifying repercussions that could affect the world.
Okay. After all that and getting all the main characters a mention, I’m tired *sigh*. Okay, I’m refreshed, so this installment of The Lost Gods saga has quite a bit going on and is separated to different character’s POV. Luckily, we don’t lose track of what is going on or what is happening to whom, and although there are five MCs it doesn’t lessen the enjoyment of the story. We have seen Culebra and Midori in previous books so we have a good idea of their back stories. Dario is the bodyguard who was also Culebra’s lover and also the brother to Culebra’s other lover (confused?). Cortex and Fidel are former members of The Brotherhood of the Black Rose. I will be honest, for more information you will have to read the book otherwise this review will be an essay!

And for those of you who read the original then this is definitely worth reading.

If there's anything in common with the characters in this series first three books, it's the fact that these characters are suicidal dickwads!
I really tried to like Culebra. This has a promising start, I was warming up to both characters when all slowly came falling down to shit! I understood Culebra's circumstances but there's a limit to self-pity. Not to mention his thoughtlessness and indecisiveness. One moment he's whining of not wanting to be with Corinos but when shit hits the fan he's crying out for Corinos to help him like wtf bitch you got yourself in trouble not even thinking of how it wil affect to Corinos and now you're wishing for him to help?!
Culebra is still young and carries a great burden. I want to excuse his action but he's just too careless and thoughtless at the most important time. Corinos is just too good for him. He never even thought that Corinos might be punish just because of his selfish act.
So no, Culebra wasn't being heroic or shit like that.And don't start me with how lame Corinos was being when he should be quickly saving little shit Prince. Time is gold. Did he really have fall unconcious in the most critical time? Uhg.
This was a very frustrating read. I just wanted to strangle every character in this book. The level of disappointment was too much I wanted to rewrite the story myself. This was supposes to be a very good plot!
This book was ridiculous. I want to be so done with this series but I need to know the end! I don't think I'll be able to sleep not knowing how this clusterfuck of a series is going to conclude. But for now, I need a break.

First of all snakes! I hate snakes and made the error to start reading it before going to bed, let's just say the dreams were not all that pleasant.
Aside from that the story of Stone Rose is interesting. Like in the other Lost God books it's unclear what happened to the god of the country but here it's where all begun. One fraction of the former priests are trying to kill the Basilisk reancanation, Culebra, the other part, which is the Order, is trying to resurect him. Both priest(Brotherhood of the Black Rose) and the Order are not successful until a new player appears, who knows more about Piedres secrets and their god but his motives are not the best for the country. It's left to Dario, a former bodyguard and lover of the Basilisk price and his companions, to stop the destruction of their god and therefore their country.
Fidel was once a follower of the Brotherhood of the Black Rose but after the one woman he loved, the best assasin of the Brotherhood, Corteza, left them, he decided to follow her. What he had not accounted for was a child of Schatten, who captures him to gain Cortez's cooperation, to capture Culebra(and why is it that the country that has a german name is cast as the one of Teufel(translation: devil)).
Captain Midori came as a diplomate but now that he has lost another prince he wants to help to rescue Culebra, even if it means working together with Dario and Fidel. A race of time begins and since all begun with death, in it's tempel lies the answer.
So it's a good adventure story, but and I don't usually say that about Megan's books, the romance between Culebra and Midori, happened pretty fast for my liking. Oh and did I mention that there is a threesome? And past mention of incest as well, so yeah the relationship part was not really my cuppa but I still liked the storyline and am looking forward to Verde's book!

Continuing the Lost Gods adventure with Prince Culebra.
This one hit my buttons in a good way. Culebra already captured my interest in book one but he stole my heart in this one. Corino was perfect in every way. I loved him from the start.
The main story is still a little confusing at times. Trying to keep track of names and places that I can't pronounce is hard. But I still get to enjoy the overall adventure.
Not sure how she did it but Megan Derr even had me feeling sympathy for the bad guy.
Not totally sold on the ending with Cortez. But it gave Culebra the ending I was hoping for so I guess I have to be content with that.
A very enjoyable series.

Just like with its predecessors, I've read the new/revised version rather than older one for this book, and by doing so left me feeling grateful that I made right decision to pick the revised version, which is a better version, so it seems, after reading the negative reviews here and there, it's confusing to be honest, it's like the older one is a completely different story. I mean, the bodyguard/lover of Culebra has different name in each version. Dario, for older version. And Corinos for newer one.
At first, I was preparing myself for a menage in this book. Actually, I seldom check the genres beside the description of the book on GR, however I accidentally glanced at one of the reader's unclosed spoiler, so unthoughtful to put spoiler on the first line after the word : WARNING. Good god... at least put some spaces between WARNING and your spoiler if you don't know how to use spoiler tags... tsk.
Well, thankfully no menage has ever happened in this revised version, I'm not particularly hate or avoid MMM, but by all means, I prefer MM (mostly), three or four is kinda too much IMO, kinda busy and confusing, unless you can't pick between twins so you got them both, end of story, lol. Another reason why I'm kinda relieved this is MM not MMM (like in the older version) is because I totally can't picture Corinos would be willing to share Culebra with other. And as usual, just like its prequels, the sexy time in this book is also faded to black... sigh... It's not necessary there, but it's a bonus if it's there...
Cortez is interesting woman for sure, strong and easygoing, meanwhile Culebra is too somber and despondent, even though he has Corinos beside him. Cortez is really like a sun while Culebra is like a moon, they totally completed each other, which is why I can accept the arrangement at the end of the book. Oh, nothing like you imagine though, lol. This is MM, not MF, haha.
This time, I'm not totally sure it's an AU of which country. My guess it's Spain. Given that Culebra means snake in Spanish. And also, Culebra's brother Pruebas means trial/test.
This is truly an enjoyable book about relationships, not many actions in it like in the book 2, this is supposedly to clear out some mysteries that were buried with the dead of Basilisk god along with the reawakening of his great and deathly power.
However the snakes were also very good at entertaining us readers here, especially our giant snake Ruisenor (means Nightingale in English, but Fidel called her Nightmare snake, lol), she's a great supporter of Culebra, a very devoted snake of Culebra, she could make you think she's adorable when you see her deep affection for Culebra, it's just like another version of puppy, but this one is a snake as pet, lol. And she always made me laugh whenever there are unfortunate people crossed her path, lol. It's comical how those people reacted and shrieked when they saw her for the 1st time, I guess I would too if I were in their position, lol.

Hmm compared to the first 2 books this was lackluster... Even the dialogue felt trite at times.
Once more the timeline is vague. 2 years after the first book and some time after the 2nd. The end was open ended like the first one, where we have no clue what happened to Kundou and the royal family. The same here the story ended but no actions happened toward the royal family and the brother that pretty much has send people to kill Culebra.
I'm not fond of and MMM rarely works for me but still when we had Dario's POV there was backtracking and the chemistry was missing between Culebra and Midori, which went from 0 to 100 in 1 second flat, between Culebra and Dario and Dario and Midori. I have to say that trying to work the mechanics of how those 3 would work in whatever POV we were at the time, while being in a time crunched, deadly mission but a dumper on things for me.
The parts that worked best for me where the Cortez-Culebra ones. And I gotta say I cheered more for Fidel and Cortez than I did the trio.
I gotta note as well that based on the first impressions I got from Culebra about Dario and Granito, I thought that they looked identical, even though they have a 2 year difference, but almost at the start of the last 3rd of the book from Dario's POV he says "He was nearly as short as Fidel and compact. Nothing like Granito, who had been tall and broad and nearly unstoppable." So yeah, that got me by surprise and also let me say that we have no idea how short Fidel is.
Anyway onto the next I go because I want to see what will happen between Ivan and Ailill.

Oh, what went wrong with this one? Good plot, mystery, world building... And then there is the Prince. Gods, I understand that being blind (well, kind of) since birth is not exactly the best experience, but seriously, I'd rather read about a person that's hardened by this kind of life and Culebra feels like a helpless emo kid. 'I'm blind and weird, nobody likes me, my life is humiliating, I'm all alone, it'd be better if I died', etc, etc. He was not appealing in the least. So he's the first fail of this book. The second one is the threesome. Don't get me wrong. I love well written threesomes and consider them incredibly sexy. But in this story it felt sooo forced! No angst, no possessiveness, there was an insta-lust between Dario and Midori and BAM! we're happy ever after in a love triangle. Very poor development.
Overall, I'm a bit disappointed in this volume. Still I wouldn't pass it, as is reveals more about the Lost Gods mystery.

I did like the setup of this book, that Culebra was a known reincarnation, and that Midori was a known character from book 1.
What I did not like was the incest. Thankfully the brother is already dead when the book starts, but the way the other character frequently talk about the incestuous relationship... Like, why?? Given that the previous book already had a cousin marriage, and there is mention of a known sibling triad that is gonna be big in the next book, I hate to see it getting more and more normalized?? Ugh.
The rest of the plot was nice though, I enjoyed the developments overall, though I think the one and only female POV character deserved SO much better - her romantic partner was barely mentioned, meanwhile all the male characters get detailed romances and sex scenes.

The most decent out of the three in this series so far, but the V romance becoming a proper menage was randomly sudden and shoehorned. There was a better relationship growth between the prince and his kidnapper than in the romances, of which there are two: one being MF and the other being MMM.
Also the attempted murder by the prince's brother, the king, was just left hanging, unaddressed. Nameless henchmen get punished with a curse to live until they've done enough good to outweigh their evil, but King Pruebas, murderous brother, ruler of the entire kingdom protected by the god brother?? We'll never know....

DNF. My suspicion that these books didn't have an independent editor just grows stronger. The MC was a bit whiny and young and I found myself unable to empathise with him at any level. I'm not reading these older works of hers again.

Ce qui est sympa dans cette série, c'est qu'à chaque tome une nouvelle histoire commence. Ce sont les même bases, mais pas les mêmes personnages. Pas la même intrigue. On peut dire qu'à chaque fois, c'est une histoire dans une grande histoire. Ce qui a comme conséquence de ne jamais s'attendre à quoi que ce soit, mais en même temps de retrouver tout de même une certaine atmosphère.
Le démarrage est un peu plus lent que ses prédécesseurs, notamment parce que l'histoire se focalise beaucoup plus sur les personnages que sur l'intrigue. L'auteur a commencé d'une façon plus cal, je dirais. On s'approprie tout doucement ces personnages.
Quant à ces personnages, tous se retrouvent à un moment de leur vie où ils n'ont jamais autant été à la dérive, perdus car incapables de voir ce que l'avenir peut bien leur réserver. D'autant plus que le sort s'acharne sur eux...
Ils ne tombent à aucun moment dans le cliché. Ils vont au bout de leurs convictions avec ce qu'ils ont de faiblesses et de force. Ils font ce qu'ils peuvent quand ils le peuvent et au final, nous montrent bien plus de force qu'ils en on conscience. Car oui, on ne peut plus, passé un certain point, les voir que comme fictifs. Ils arrivent à nous toucher de telle sorte qu'on a l'impression qu'ils nous appartiennent un peu. L'auteur arrive à faire cet effet-là avec son histoire.
Le suspens m'a frustré aussi des fois. On voit à travers beaucoup de personnages, et leur voyage se ressemble. Pourtant, on ne cesse de se demander quel sera le prochain mouvement.
On arrive à presque une routine vu les évênement qui se passent et tout à coup boum, des révélations, de l'action. Ca nous ébranle entièrement, et on devient avide de savoir ce qui va se passer, ce qui va arriver à nos héros. On a peur aussi pour eux, enfin vraiment on passe par tout un panel d'émotions car on y tient à ces héros, on les porte dans notre coeur.
Après il y a beaucoup de personnages dont on suit la traversée, de sorte que jusqu'à un certain point, j'ai trouvé que c'était trop. Le fait de devoir "attendre" le chapitre suivant pour savoir la suite de se qui se déroule ailleurs est trop. Et à cause de ça j'ai dû vraiment ronger mon frein et du coup ça perd de son élan. Mais j'imagine aussi que je suis vraiment trop impatiente. L'auteur nous met sous le nez des histoires super intéressantes pour nous faire patienter ensuite !
Des questions trouvent enfin des réponses, pour notre soulagement, et de ce fait, les pièces du puzzle s'assemblent pour construire au fur et à mesure une image dont on voit mieux l'ensemble.
On rencontre aussi grâce à l'auteur plusieurs formes d'amour, qui nous ouvre l'esprit face au monde qui nous entoure. Mais pas que, il y a aussi différents modes de pensée qu'il nous fait découvrir. Dans ces livres, il n'y a pas de discrimination. Que ce soit les genres des personnages, leur orientation sexuelle ou leur façon de vivre en général, il concentre son texte sur le thème abordé. Sur le sujet et l'histoire qu'il veut nous faire découvrir. C'est aussi en ça que le livre est attachant. L'auteur ne se donne comme limite que celles que lui-même s'est donnée. Et je trouve ça très courageux de sa part.
L'histoire a quand même réussi à me tenir en haleine de sorte que je ne voyais pas les heures passer.
Après m'être immergée dans ces trois tomes, l'univers, l'écriture et les aventures de ce récit vont me manquer. Ca m'a vraiment enveloppée. Je me suis sentie entourée de bien des manières durant ces traversées. Et bien que je sache que ce n'est pas fini, et que je vais devoir patienter quelques temps pour pouvoir avoir la suite des aventures, ça ne me console pas. En tout cas c'est vraiment une de ces histoires qui vous marque profondemment dans la durée...
Et maintenant que j'ai fini ce troisième tome, je vais encore plus ronger mon frein en attendant la suite !

Terminé! J'adore cette série, comment résister ?
Donc, commençons par les points positifs, car je crois qu'il faut se baser là-dessus! Quelle histoire superbe! J'ai été très déçue par le deuxième tome, car j'ai trouvé que l'auteur n'avait pas donné trop d'importance au couple, laissant l'aventure des dieux primer sur leur relation au lieu de faire une juste dose, par contre, celui-ci rejoint le premier, que ce soit au niveau de la relation ou de l'intrigue! J'ai passé un trop bon moment avec ce livre fantastique ! Je pense que ce dieu Basilic reste le top pour moi. Il faut d'abord comprendre le plan de cette série pour comprendre les histoires, comme je l'ai dit dans le premier tome. Et je dois vous prévenir, il y a de l'inceste, légèrement, cela dit pour que vous compreniez le couple, et enfin, c'est une relation à trois. On ne le devine pas au début, mais ensuite, cela devient plus claire. Leur histoire est bien travaillée, quoi que bien trop rapide, mais heureusement, la fin laisse entendre qu'ils vont explorer cette relation plus en avant. Les personnages secondaires aussi ont leur places dans ce roman, ils ont leurs points de vue, et on apprend à les apprécier. On revoie aussi d'autres persos du tome 1 et 2, dont le tome 1 où l'auteur a invoqué l'un des héros. Quant à l'aventure, je n'ai rien à dire là-dessus, elle était parfaite et complète. Voilà, pour ne pas vous en dire plus. lol. Pour vous donner une idée, ce livre est du même genre que "Prince Captif", mais fantastique. A vous de découvrir !
Maintenant, venons-en aux point négatifs que je déplore vraiment ! Je vous en parle, car c'était trop! DES FAUTES! Des fautes d'orthos, il manque des mots, ils ont oublié d'effacer des mots, du présent parfois, alors que c'est un texte au passé! Bref, ça m'a gâché ma lecture ! Ce n'était pas le cas pour les deux premiers tomes, alors pourquoi celui-ci, que j'ai le plus aimé! Je trouve ça vraiment dommage, s'il n'y en avait que quelques uns, je crois que j'aurais laissé passer, mais c'était vraiment trop. M'enfin, très déçue de ce côté-là.

High fantasy adventure with ideology.
So, I should probably confess that I just hopped right into this one rather than reading the first two in the series. That said, I actually want to read the first two books and the final one after reading this. I found this entertaining and the pace was great.
The mythos and the world building were well done. The basilisk and chthonic deities in general have always fascinated me. The vanquishing of the earth gods by the sky gods in religions tickles me. Basically, I was sold on this book as soon as I read the word "basilisk". I'm weak like that.
The characters spun around all these ideas of gods and their power struggles and lost worshippers are solid. Hard not to love the otherworldly-hued Culebra, who truly seemed like an early manifestation of the white stag of Christian symbolism.
That intrusion of black is quite lovely symbolism in itself. And all Culebra's companions are nicely detailed, each adding a facet to his coterie.
There is a disturbingly high amount of people being knocked unconscious plot-wise, but other than that I enjoyed the ride. 3.5 stars that leans towards 4 stars.
Overall, intrigue and a quest set amongst the gods' chess match.

He flinched at his own thoughts, which immediately called up Culebra in all his pale, delicate beauty, the long line of white broken only by the black bandages wrapped around his eyes.

This one was much more heavily weighted toward the fantasy end of the spectrum rather than the romance like the first two. In fact, the various couples only spend maybe 5% of the book actually being together amidst all of the kidnapping and chasing and rescuing.
That's not what made me enjoy it less, however. In fact, much of the story I was more enthralled with than the first two books, the traveling and the new country to explore and the new characters were fascinating. Especially having a strong female character--I enjoyed that more than I anticipated I would. I also really did like Culebra, Dario, and Midori for the most part... Much as I wish I'd gotten to see more of them together.
What made me enjoy it less was how it ended.

The story of Piedre. I really liked this book as well as the series so far. It was absolutely frustrating to see Culebra fight against Corinos every step of the way. I presume this was part of why I like this series; although the stories should feel complete clichés, they somewhat don't. From the three books I have read so far, Culebra seemed the most godly one. I mean, it's probably the fact that he was a prince his whole life, all the authority that he transpires, it was clear that he was always god first and prince second.
As for Corinos... I have to give him credit, I haven't seen anyone that persistent in a while. But waiting around Culebra years almost makes me not like him. For a while I just wanted to shake him while shouting Grow some balls, man!
Cortez was awesome. I always liked when girls had more balls than the guys and were all badasses. She did slip a bit towards the end but I can forgive her that. I definitely did not see that ending coming (thumbs up).

I like this series better with every volume. It has everything a good fantasy novel needs. Characters with depth and flaws, an absorbing plot and a world which is believable planned. I enjoy Megan Derr's books a lot and I love that she pays so much attention to detail. Every country in this series has its own customs and believes, people say hello and goodbye according to their deity or the element connected to it. I just love those little things.
The only thing why it's not 5 stars is the whole thing with Granito. Of course, some things have to be a certain way and you can't always make everyone happy. It's all believable but I still don't like it :) I hurt for the characters and want them to be alive not dead. So this is as much a point for the book (because Megan Derr doesn't force a happy ending for everyone when it's better for the story there are a few casualties) as it is against it (for me) (because, damn it! I want them to be happy! ^^).
So, I can recommend this book (the entire series) to everyone and I can't wait to read Poison!

Almost the same review as the ones of the preceding instalments. After reading it a second time (and then a third and a fourth and a fifth time), however, I do not mind the negative points listed below and absolutely loved the book! I also rated it four stars from the start, it is just that good even with it's flaws!
Same old, same old:
The world building is really intriguing, but the story is told very superficial. The missing depth, all the details that were left out and the fact that the story was told, rather than experienced are again clearly negative aspects.
I really enjoyed the style, the story, the characters and the world building very much, but it had so much potential to be something more. I like Megan Derr, though I wish she worked together with an author of good epic fantasy - together they could create real master pieces. And maybe Megan would get a better editor, too many mistakes.
This time one of the main characters is actually female and it fits perfectly, a really good plot! A really good M/M fantasy series!

First things first, I love the characters, love them all from the first book. BUT, I hate their stupidity sometimes. It's a personal grudge, not really directed to the characters. It just makes me feel frustrated of their decisions coz it conjures up memories I don't like. xD
Secondly, I am fascinated by the cultures of every country, but most especially the religion that is being painted. Their beliefs, makes me wonder of our own religion. I also love the dresses, even though I mostly imagine it, but the picture in my head is so vivid coz of the descriptions so I say I really love it.
Third, I can't wait to know what really happened to the Gods!!! xD
oh and here's a PS:

Right I am really starting to believe that no one actually edits this book. I mean at one point she spelt the word piece as peace LOL and then started off quotation marks and never finished them on countless occasions, or then just randomly shoved one at the end of a sentence. As hysterically funny as it is to read SOOOOOO MANY mistakes, it’s also quite annoying that I’m paying for the privilege of it. The story that’s being told overall is good, but it’s really starting to miff me off that in the end I’ll have spent a good £35ish on books that don’t even seem to be proof read and if they was it was by illiterate children.

What to say? I am rather torn here... It was either 1 star because there are BLOODY SNAKES EVERYWHERE!!! Or 5 stars because of awesomeness... Clearly, I have put my feelings aside and given this book the rating it deserves for an all-around great read (despite the shivers), comprising all the telltale signs of a Megan Derr book: characters you love to love or hate, page-turning storytelling, and breath holding suspense. Read, or die at the eyes of the Basilisk!

A 2-3 read. Seemed tightly written, although the storyline was a tad predictable.
It reminded me of 'Bound' for some reason. Not sure why.
