LaHaye starts his book by telling how appalled he was when he realized America was experiencing a "homosexual epidemic" (p. 8) and how this book came about. His publisher at Tyndale said to him "The Christian community needs a penetrating book about homosexuality. Why don't you write it?" Apparently he was given the assignment not because he had any expertise, but because of his contempt for homosexuals. Homosexuals seem to be some lower forms of human in LaHaye's mind; he describes their alleged behavior in a way that an anthropologist would describe the strange ways of some less evolved human species.

He tries to hide his contempt with the usual "hate the sin, love the sinner"-rhetoric, but his true opinions are obvious; he shows no love, only contempt for homosexuals. He goes on to say things like, homosexuals are selfish, because of the "heartache and suffering they cause other innocent people" (p. 47). Well perhaps there would be less heartache and suffering in the world if it weren't for the type of Bronze age narrow mindedness of judgmental people like Tim LaHaye. And all homosexuals are angry. Perhaps they would be less angry were they not constantly attacked by people like LaHaye. We also learn that homosexuals often have 2000 sex partners and that they want to recruit children into homosexuality. LaHaye also claims that if society accepts homosexuals there will be an increase in crime and society will draw upon itself the wrath of God. This is idiocy on the same level of that of Jerry Falwell. Their type of rhetoric leads to crime: hate crimes against gays.

LaHaye's explanations to why people become homosexual are strictly Freudian. His solution to the "problem" is not. According to LaHaye, there is one cure for homosexuality - to become a born-again Christian. This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows who Tim LaHaye is. After all he is an evangelist, not an expert on homosexuality. It's funny that LaHaye repeatedly accuse those he doesn't agree with of being biased propagandists and still, his own work is anything but fair and balanced. The book contains a total of 36 footnotes, naming about a dozen different sources, including Anita Bryant's autobiography. Most of the time, he makes claims without naming any sources other than "someone told me that", "many scholars say", "others agree with me" and the likes.

If you're looking for a book with factual information about homosexuality, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a 200 page Christian rant against "perverts", this is the book you're looking for.

The reason gay people are unhappy is because straight people are assholes.

There you go. You don't need to read a whole book, I've just solved the mystery for you.

Apparently, this book is of the opinion that homosexuality is an explosive epidemic. An pandemic. Oh, the horror! Because, OMG, people are openly gay. And totes unhappy about it, if one is to believe this author.

The only likely reason the LGBT community is unhappy is because of homophobic assholes who think that they are a lower class of citizens.

I'm sure his next book is going to be about people who dare to fuck in non-missionary positions and/or have a little kink in the bedroom. I'm sure those people are terribly unhappy too.

Where's the sarcasm font when you need it?

I read The Unhappy Gays for research for my next book on the rise and fall on conversion therapy. Tim LaHaye has a lot to answer for.

What was considered to be a ground-breaking work was actually a rehashing of outdated preconceived ideas and misconceptions. His book significantly contributed to the internal harm done to gays and lesbians in the church for decades as well as reinforcing the existing negatives in straight Christian minds and in society as a whole. Whilst his works on marriage and pop psychology may have lifted him to a level of guru status in the evangelical Christian world this book only reveals his ignorance of the reality of gay and lesbian people and that he was nothing more than a product of his time.

This book was written by Doctor Tim LaHaye, a self described counselor with significant experience on treating homosexuals and on working with "Human Temperaments." By reading just the back cover of the book, one could easily acquire the wrong impression about this book. Tim LaHaye is not a medical doctor. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Bob Jones University (A university which did not admit black students until 1971 and banned interracial dating amongst students until 2000!) doctorate in ministry from Western Seminary and a Doctorate in Literature from Liberty University (The insane home turf of the Falwells and their unique brand of Christian Conservativism.) Tim LaHaye also founded the Traditional Values Coalition, which is recognized by the SPLC as a hate group due to their absolutely unhinged comments about homosexuals traveling door to door and kidnapping children.

I was originally going to give this book a 2 star review, because LaHaye started his book with being surprisingly respectful, but the more I read the more I realized this was not true.

LaHaye may open the book by pushing back on a variety of homosexual stereotypes as harmful and untrue, saying that gays, just like straight people are normal and want to be happy... he quickly drops this charade. As he goes through this work his statement that one shouldn't stereotype gays is entirely forgotten.

Gays go from being normal people to being sexual degenerates with an AVERAGE of 2000 sexual partners in their lifetimes! DOn't stereotype homosexuals of course, but LaHaye asserts that in his counseling homosexuals he has NEVER met a homosexual that had a positive relationship with their parents, that almost all homosexuals are extremely lonely with an extreme propensity to suicidality, that every single homosexual is an alcoholic, and that almost all homosexuals are degenerates who are obsessed with HOMOSEXUAL porn. (I do not know why LaHaye felt the need to emphasize that gay people tend to consume gay porn)

LaHaye, rather obviously, considers homosexuality to be an extreme negative in someone's life. In one of my personal favorite moments of the book, LaHaye responds to an author who listed a bunch of noted historic figures who were gay by claiming that they succeeded despite their homosexuality, not because of it, and that they would have achieved even GREATER things had they been straight.

In sheer frustration I wrote in the margins there "DOCTOR LAHAYE, ARE YOU GREATER THAN ALEXANDER!?" like come on man. There is nothing but actual childish levels of prejudice to see figures like Alexander, Frederick the Great, Michelangelo, or Alan Turing would have been more impactful upon history if they would have been sexually attracted to a woman instead of a man.

For all of us icky homosexuals, however, Dr. LaHaye does give us some EXTREMELY helpful advice.

If you are a man attracted to men, or a woman attracted to women, or a transgender person (They are lumped in as homosexuals by LaHaye, regardless of their actual attraction), one can escape their SINFUL TEMPERMENT by turning to the LORD OUR GOD!

LaHaye gives an 18 step guide to all the things a recovering homosexual can do in order to heal themselves, including but not limited to; Accepting Jesus Christ (Tried it, didn't work.) Walking in the Spirit (Tried it, didn't work.) Facing your homosexuality as a sin (tried it a LOT, didn't work), Learning to accept your sexuality (In this, he means assigned gender), and to become involved in a Bible-Teaching Church (which is utterly hilarious when you consider I went to church four times a week, a christian school, and routinely went to bible camp and on mission trips and STILL ended up gay.) Finally, LaHaye does suggest that some Homosxuals are in fact possessed by demons, who DRIVE THEM TO ABNORMAL SEXUAL EXCESSES!

In the preceding chapter as his 18 step guide to curing homosexuality, Dr. LaHaye includes this wonderful quote:
" This is not to suggest that Christians advocate for the death penalty for today's homosexuals, but I do have a question that needs consideration. Who is really being cruel and inhuman- those whose leniency allows homosexuality to spread to millions of victims who would not otherwise have been enticed into this sad and lonely life style, or those who practiced Old Testament capital punishment?"
And that's something I feel like isn't looked at enough about this book. LaHaye does not just consider homosexuality wrong, he considers it as something that should be regarded as so repulsive I SHOULD BE KILLED. LaHaye even is aware that this is a bad look for him, which is why he couches that statement with the expression that he is not REALLY advocating for killing homosexuals, he just thinks letting them live like this is more cruel. In this chapter LaHaye first states that homosexuality is not the most serious sin, then a few pages later states it is hated by God more than any other. Later in the work he notes that Christ never had to specifically address homosexuality, because stoning kept its practice in Israel to a minimum.

Despite his assertion that killing homosexuals is kinder than letting them live as normal people, LaHaye states that failing to react with love to homosexuals is a major failing of christians (literally the page after an entire monologue about how vile and degenerative the average homosexual becomes after giving into his temptations.)

Finally, I would like to talk about a reoccurring call to action throughout this book. This book was published one year after Anita Bryant founded the Save Our Children campaign, which sought to repeal a Miami Florida protection that prevented teacher's from being fired solely for being gay. Bryant considered homosexuals to be degenerates who were attempting to groom the nations children into a life of sin, a position that LaHaye fervently agrees with. He states that when you consider that all she is doing is protecting children from sin, Bryant is the one who is TRULY being progressive and tolerant, not the progay crowd. As he talks about how good Christians can resist homosexuality, LaHaye talks about how parents need to actively watch schools for homosexuals, and if one is found they MUST bring the matter to the principal, then the school board, then the State Superintendent of Education. He says "Remember, if we lose the battle with homosexuals in the school room, we have lost the battle!"

The connection with the modern day obsession with transgender students in teachers is obviously a development of this very idea! They lost their capacity to arbitrarily oppress someone just for being gay, so now LaHaye's modern equivalents are focusing all their energies using the same equipment against trans kids and trans teachers.

Ultimately, LaHaye and his entire thesis is repulsive and misinformed. His predication on the "reformed homosexual" movement as a way to naturally come out of this VILE SIN has aged about as well as a tub of yogurt from 1978 would have, since many of the Reformed Homosexual movements major figures have since come back out as gay and acknowledged that this movement was severely damaging to them. (See the Netflix documentary Pray Away.) America still exists even after we decriminalized homosexuality in 2003 and legalized gay marriage in 2015, despite LaHaye's ASSERTION that God will damn the United States if we ever tolerate the vile sin. LaHaye insists that the acceptance of homosexuality will lead to an epidemic of Crime, yet in the United states crime has gone down considerably since 1978.

This kind of mindset is ultimately why I no longer feel as if I can call myself a christian. I was raised in an extremely Christian community. My parents are fundamentalist Christians, and in all honesty the utter hatred and revulsion that this section of Christianity has given to me, my friends, and tons of people who aren't even LGBTQ has made me feel, apathetic at best towards Christianity. How can I practice a religion that has caused my own mother to tell me I am an embarrassment, a failure, vile, and just today that she will never ever accept me? It's like... it's like trusting someone who has hurt you time and time again just because you've known them for a long time. Do I truly believe anymore? I don't know. I don't know what to do next.

Dear author.
It's far too late for you. The gay is everywhere, creeping in, taking over your friends, your children, maybe even you. You can feel it deep down can't you? The gayness taking over. Soon the world will be fully overtaken.
As I type, I can feel it taking hold of me too. I have an sudden urge to listen to Lady Gaga and kiss girls.
But there is nothing you can do to stop it. It's coming for you.

Also, oh, I'm so unhappy. Because I feel accepted in the LGBTQ+ community and girls make me happier than I have been in my life, so therefore I am VERY sad.
Thank you dear author, for your dumb opinion.

Just one look at the worldly secular reviews made me realize that this is one book I need to add to my library. I will be praying for the souls of the mockers. The Bible says in the last days many will call evil good, and good evil. I pray that the mockers have not become reprobates, but their actions are telling me that they more than likely are reprobates. I pray God forgives them. I pray they repent and turn from their wickedness before it's too late.

The mockers ought to feel ashamed for what they are doing, but they cannot feel shame because it's evident they lack the Holy Spirit and Holy Conviction. They think they are having fun now mocking, laughing, and posting vile satanic reprobate - sodomite laced images, but sadly they won't be laughing when the wrath of Gods judgement is poured out on the world and them. Thankfully even though God is the ultimate judge, He is also merciful and He will forgive them if they sincerely repent and turn from their wicked ways.

Jesus Christ CAN free you from the sin and snares of homosexuality but you have to want it! you have to be willing to allow Christ full reign over your life, give your life fully to Him so He can set you free! whom the Lord sets free is free in deed! I know the power of the Lord to set people free of the snares of homosexuality! He has set me free of bisexuality! so contrary to what is being said there are MANY people all over the world still to this day who are being converted, people are leaving the lgbtq in droves to serve the Lord fully! The wicked lgbtq agenda wants you to believe other wise but the proof is in the pudding, look up Dennis Jernigan, he is a well known Christian singer who has forsaken his past homosexual lifestyle many years ago to serve the Lord. Dennis is happily married with I believe 9 kids, so change and happiness is possible!

If you love the Lord you WILL keep His commandments! Homosexuality IS and always WILL be an abomination to God! The media today paints homosexuality with a positive light, even going as far as to make homosexuals look like victims but this just isn't the case! The true victims are the Christians! Many Christians are losing their jobs, their houses, and even their lives for speaking the truth on the matter that homosexuality is wicked! We love the sinner but we abhor the sin! Homosexuality is not something anyone is EVER born with! homosexuality is a choice! I should know because I chose to be straight for my Lord and Saviour!

Choose this day whom you will serve! baal and his perverse ways that lead to destruction, or God and His holy ways that lead to life eternal! as for me and my house we are going to choose God and serve God!

Describe this book in 4 words: Informative, biblical, historical, counselling-perspective

Modern relevancy: 8/10
Writing quality: 8.5/10
Reread Value: 7/10

Review:
Though this book is in need of an update as it contains many outdated statistics and arguments, it is full of interesting nuggets of information regarding the homosexual community of the 1960s-1990s (approx) from a christian perspective. I think it is also worthwhile to note that this book is written from a christian perspective and from within a biblical worldview, so a lot of people (especially those of the modern-secular era) will likely find this book distasteful and disheartening, especially if they are unable to read it objectively/without allowing their emotions to run away with their brains (as seem apparent among many of the reviews bellow).
Despite this book being in need of an update, he brings many worthwhile arguments and discussion points to the table; His explanation of what causes homosexuality, why certain individuals are more attracted to the lifestyle and who are more vulnerable to the desires that come with it, as well as his points near the end of the book relating to the change of crime due to the growing popularity of homosexuality, are especially insightful and line up with a lot of the study I have already done in psychology (specifically forensic). There are a few books within christian circles that I’ve read that do not touch on homosexuality from a psychological perspective as LaHaye does here. He also goes into the psychological and philosophical foundations of the homosexual community regarding the contributions of Fraud, Havelock Ellis and the Kinsey Reports, though he didn’t go into as much detail as one should and I would prefer, his observations were very informative to read about even if it was very basic.
For such a small book, he certainly does go into a lot of detail and has clearly done quite a lot of research and has a good amount of experience in discussing (most of) the issues he addresses in this book, both as a counsellor and someone seeking to understand and better help those within the homosexual community. However, some observations he makes can be easily questioned as his knowledge on those conclusions don’t seem to come from an explicitly reliable source, yet despite this, there are other conclusions he comes to about the reasons and causes for homosexuality that also line up with my own observations found in both LGBTQ+ fiction and real-life LGBTQ+ figures, both from history and those still living in the modern era.

In conclusion, I would recommend this book (despite it being a bit outdated) to those within the church wanting to better understand and advise people within the church on the subject of homosexuality (and it's effects). The author, despite what other reviewers may say, is a compassionate writer who clearly has a heart for those within the homosexual community as well as a heart for God and his word. I’d say this is a goldmine for biblical counsellors and others interested in helping those within the homosexual community who are struggling and are seeking help from the church and those within it.

I would also recommend this to those within the church who are simply seeking to better understand and empathise with those within the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve experienced and observed a lot of hostility towards individuals who identify or even look as if they may identify as gay or trans, this kind of hostile behaviour coming from those within the church is disgusting and un-Godly behaviour that often comes from a place of apathy, unkindness and hate directed at people rather than their sin, so I think this book will give those people the information (and motivation) they need to be more compassionate and less judgemental towards those within the LGBTQ+ community, as well (as unbelievable as this may sound to secular readers).

If you found this book as insightful as me you should read: What does the Bible really Teach about Homosexuality? by Kevin DeYoung and The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield

Since the author is a Christian, he wrote from a Judeo-Christian-Bible Worldview and Values, it will make perfect sense to you if you reading the book from similar perspectives! For readers from different philosophical backgrounds (maybe Buddist, Hindu, Communist, atheistic-humanist, etc...)! I urge you to do some Objective Comparisons to see whether your philosophical systems have any good solid foundations and whether the Judeo-Christian-Bible Worldview and Values make more sense to you? Why do the first & many later centuries' Christians willing to suffer many persecutions even death for their Faith? Are there any Truth, any Good/Useful Ideas, any Beauty from the Bible??
