I read this sometime last week, but I've not been keeping up with my Goodreads account as well as I should.
I bought Write Your Own Fantasy Story by Tish Farrell to read with my kids. I hoped to find tips to spark their interest in writing.
Farrell does a great job of explaining character development and how to plot a story in ways that young readers can understand. She uses popular books such as the Harry Potter series, The Choronicials of Narnia, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and others as examples for young readers, allowing them to see what she's talking about through stories they know.
Farrell gives tips and writing exercises in each chapter. Many of the writing exercises Farrell gives are new to me, even though I've studied creative writing on a collegiate level.
Write Your Own Fantasy is one in a series of six books. The other books in the series include Write Your Own Science Fiction, Mystery, Historical Fiction, and Adventure. This series is indispensable for young writers. I wish I had a series of books like this in middle school.
I can't wait to work through Farrell's writing exercises with my children!
I read this at the same time as "Write Your Own Fantasy", so I am going to use the same review. Especially since a lot of the content was almost the same, with some sentences/paragraphs being identical. It just seems like a very formulaic advice book in that respect and I am unlikely to explore the other "Write Your Own" titles. This book was filed under young adult at my library, and so I was expecting something of a bit higher level. After finishing reading I looked at the copyright page and found it is listed as "juvenile" which is definitely a much more appropriate audience. I think the target audience is really for 3rd to 5th grade. That being said, it was a lot of very "obvious" information for anyone who has been instructed in any kind of narrative writing. Also for a book published in 2006, it makes using a computer to type up the document seem revolutionary, when the target audience at the time of publication grew up with technology. There are a few useful tidbits in here but it is very much for someone who has never written anything before, rather than someone who wants to improve his/her craft.
This will depend upon what age you are and how experienced you are with creative writing.
This book, I believe, was aimed at budding young writers (Children to Young Adults) who are just beginning to dip their toes into storytelling. This was my first book that introduced me to creative writing, when I was in school, and it works well to get you started without bogging the reader down (and maybe putting them off the whole venture) with lengthy explanations and topics like grammar. This book is just there to get you started with topics such as Characters, Plots and Generating ideas.
The Book is also presented in a nice way, with lots of coloured images on the pages to add visual interest. There are also examples from well-known authors (like Philip Pullman, Eion Colfer)that a younger audience might have heard of and enjoyed reading.
This book is great for sparking that first interest.
Very helpful for budding young authors like myself who are interested in writing fantasy stories. I shall be reading this book often, as it has many helpful tips and techniques, and the pages are filled with inspirational pictures and author reccommendations and their tips and techniques for writing. This book has really been worth buying from the little old breaking down book store I got it from!
In retrospect I felt this book was pitched to a younger audience potentially but I think I still got something out of it. Besides, it does provide a good overview of how to write a fantasy story.
