Great book for those who are looking for help networking during a job search. I'm a bit introverted and very nervous about this whole networking thing. The 5-step approach presented here makes it appear to follow and only takes 20 minutes out of your contact's busy schedule! I'll be putting it to use this coming week as I have two networking meetings set up! A must read (and quick read) for all job seekers, and really all people! 8 out of 10.
I have now recommended this book to over 100 people. I am always happy to accept a LinkedIn request of someone in a job transition, and this is one of the few business books I have enjoyed. Really worth a read if you're in a job transition or thinking of one.
Quick but excellent read. Very clearly and succinctly describes how best to network (i.e., interact with other professionals in a mutually beneficial way) in just 20 minutes of time. In other words: how to construct a very effective meeting that provides you an opportunity to learn or connect with others who can help you on a job search while offering something of substance and meaning to the interviewee in return.
Having been on the receiving end of such meetings - even business development meetings - I can see and vouch for power-packed punch of such an approach.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in business. It could easily transform your business relationships for the better.
This book is great for anyone. We will all be looking for employment or at least looking for connections to help us with starting new businesses or will need help for something personal and don’t know where to start. This book taught me it’s perfectly ok to talk to someone with the express intention to get a reference for a job or a business deal. But you should follow the guidelines mentioned to make the meeting effective. I just finished reading this book and implementing the lessons learned and I already have a meeting scheduled with a potential partner for a deal that can be worth 7 figures.
This was extremely helpful. Very succinct, clear, and engaging. Unlike other business self-help-ish books, this book seemed to be grounded in how humans actually behave (save for the "gifting" part at the end, which I think would be a little much for my region/field). I read the Executive version, because that's the copy I had access to, but I am going to check my library for the Graduate edition because I'm interested in seeing how the authors adjust the give-and-take model for people with less experience (who might have less to "give").
Good book from Executive Recruiter perspective. Definitely can use techniques for job hunting, business clients, and to build your professional network. Very easy read, supplemental details are good for tablets and smartphones. I could not imagine flipping back and forth through the actual book. Good idea to keep people interactive but most readers like to read through a book and highlight important information versus flipping back and forth.
What a great and important read! Marcia Ballinger uses her expertise to help advise all those considering how best to network. I love the structured and time-sensitive approach:
1) Great first impression (2-3 minutes) 2) Great overview (1 minute) 3) Great discussion - including ask for other connections (5 questions, 12-15 minutes) 4) Great ending - thanks and wrap (2 minutes) 5) Great follow-up (right after meeting)
Just seeing the steps is helpful, but reading the context and advice for each is incredibly valuable. A must read!

Simple, quick read that distills critical points of networking, getting the networkers down to business. This makes networking doable, and then coupled with gratitude and helping those who have agreed to network, the approach is simple and very effective. Worth a quick read to up your networking game.
Would recommend to anyone job hunting in 2024. It felt like an outline for how to set up these meetings to be respectful of everyone's time. I wish the book had went more in depth about networking for remote roles but was really clear about networking for jobs that you have physical access to 'contacts'. Enjoyed the audible version tremendously.
Useful practical information and method to hold meetings. A lot of good information that shouldn’t have gone to a book and should’ve stayed in an article. If you haven’t done a lot of job search, this is a good start.
Short, digestible and to the point. It serves as a primer and inspirational format for transitioning job-seekers and eliminates the idea of “networking” being a dirty self-serving effort.
This book was extremely helpful for two reasons (1) it was short and to the point; (2) I left with a great outline of how to conduct networking meetings moving forward. I really appreciate the advice from experienced professionals and the examples!
Practical, straight to the point, and filled with the tools to practice and execute strategies. As someone who has sat on the receiving end of these types of meeting requests, I appreciate the goals in this book. And am looking forward to testing them out as the seeker!
Very interesting and helpful in network preparation and execution. Was able to put many of the suggestions into practice with ease. Would definitely recommend to all aspiring networkers.
Practical and clear process for networking. I've started implementing some of its premises and it does work. Perhaps too much filler with stories, but that lends credence and proof of concept.
Lots of great, easy to understand information about how to conduct a networking meeting. This book is a must if you are out of work, underemployed or looking to improve your networking skills. I only gave it three stars as I already knew most of the info in the book, and felt a lot of it was common sense, but it is well written and thought out. I have interviewed with the author and she's a terrific recruiter.
Extremely enjoyed the book. Gave me a new perspective on how to network more at my work. Even though this book is more geared towards job transition, I am using the tips in here in my networking meetings within my current employer. I enjoy the 20 minute rule , the agenda. It is very effective. I tried it few of my networking meetings with senior leaders at my company and felt good. Felt I left a good impression with them.
