I don’t have kids of my own, but after twenty-five years of observing family dynamics from behind my teacher’s desk, I’d have to say that parenting is the hardest job in the world. At our Christian high school, we dedicate ourselves to coming alongside parents as they seek to lead their children to Christ, guide their character development, and prepare them for life. So I’ll be sharing my copy of Lead Your Family Like Jesus with as many parents as possible.

I discovered this book as part of inspirational fiction author Tricia Goyer’s Launch Team. She co-wrote the book with Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges.

Are you wondering what qualifies Tricia to write a book on parenting?

She began motherhood as a teen mom.
After she gave her life to the Lord, He led her to marry a godly man.
She and her hubs had two more children.
Tricia became a working mom (she’s written 30+ books) and homeschooler.
She started a Crisis Pregnancy Center.
She leads Teen MOPS.
Her family teaches children’s church together each Sunday.
Now that Tricia has a married son, son in college, and daughter in high school, she and her husband recently adopted 3 young children.
She provides a home for her grandmother, and Tricia is a grandmother herself.

Are you catching on that Tricia has much practical wisdom to share with parents in all stages of their journey?

How will reading Lead Your Family Like Jesus benefit you? This book will help you “take Christ out of the spare compartment of your private spiritual life and give him free rein in all your daily actions and relationships.”

I’d sum up the main takeaway with these lines: “Leading like Jesus as a parent is first a spiritual matter. Whenever you have an opportunity to influence the thinking and behavior of other family members, the first questions you have to answer is, ‘Am I motivated by self-interest or by the betterment of those I’m serving?’”

My favorite chapters discussed the concept of EGO. Initially EGO stands for Edging God Out and allowing Pride and Fear to dictate our choices, actions, and reactions. The authors remind us that “Edging God Out separates us from Him, from others, and from knowing the true selves He designed us.” They then encourage us that “when we replace our tendency to Edge God Out with Exalting God Only,” we operate from Humility and "influence our kids in a way that points them to Christ."

***Thanks to Tricia and Tyndale House for sending me a copy of Lead Your Family Like Jesus to review. Please, don’t miss picking up a copy of the book! Both parents and parents-to-be will appreciate this book. And if you are a grandparent, one of the nicest things you can do for your grandkids is to share this book with their parents.

More encouraging quotes from the book:

“By looking at Jesus, you can learn how to build a loving relationship with your children and extended family—no matter how you were raised and no matter what challenges your family faces.”

“When the bills appear bigger than your income, trust in God by acknowledging that He is your Provider. He will supply what you need—not always what you want. He promises to take care of His children.”

“Family members will experience what’s in your heart and head when your motivations and beliefs about parenting affect your hands—your actions.”

"Why is a single gal like her reading a book for parents in leading their families?"

Good question. I wanted to read the book for a few different reasons. I wanted to read, learn, and see how this book could help me in the areas of:

1. my own personal family. I am an aunt to three, sister, and daughter.

2. my job since I work with children.

3. my ministry since I work with our youth.

Let me tell y'all...this book is AWESOME!!! (And, I am so not just saying that either!) The authors put in a lot of great advice, personal testimonies, principles to follow, and Scriptures to encourage and help in being a "servant leader". So many times, I have been guilty of being a "self-serving" leader and not a "servant-hearted" one. I want to be the best that I can be (play the army music with that-lol). I know that I will never be perfect. I will fall short at times, but I want to love and serve with all I am/have. I want to be better equipped in dealing with others (whatever their age). I don't want to be one that "harps" all the time, but one who disciplines out of love, respect, and gets the point across without beating them over the head with it. I also know that this book will be something I will keep for when I have my own family one day (if it's His will).

After I read the first page of Lead Your Family Like Jesus (LYFLJ) I had to grab a pencil. I wanted to study this book, not just read it. I appreciate how the three authors bring decades of parenting, grandparenting, and business leadership experience to the pages of this book.

LYFLJ is one of those books I will refer to often throughout my life, applying its principles in the situations life throws at me. If I had to tell you about LYFLJ in two words, I'd say, "Servant leadership."

If you want to learn more about leading with a servant heart--the way Jesus leads us--then pick up this book.

How does one lead like Jesus? The book will answer that question along with the following:

The Heart: To lead is to serve. How does that look?
The Head: What is your vision and direction?
The Hands: How do your motivations and beliefs lead your to serve?
The Habits: What are key habits that help you follow in Jesus' footsteps as you parent?

My copy is dog-eared, underlined, scribbled in the margins, circled and bent. Check out this book. Your return on the investment will be high and worth the while.

*Thanks to Focus on the Family and Litfuse Literary Group for a preview copy in exchange for a fair review.

In Lead Your Family Like Jesus, Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges, and Tricia Goyer have collaborated on the principles of how to lead and parent your family. The book covered 12 important principles to impact your family for the glory of God. For example, some of these included, “Saying No to EGO”, “An Audience of One”, “Family Values”, “For a Limited Time Only”, “Teaching to the Test”, and much more. Leading your family requires serving one another, providing unconditional love to each family member, teaching children in the way they are supposed to go, and how they are expected to behave.

The book was divided into four sections, “Heart”, “Head”, “Hands”, and “Habits”.

The heart consisted of focusing on the internal issues and not letting your pride and ego drive how you raise your children. It’s critical that we don’t overly push our children to succeed to make us feel like we’re better parents than other parents. We have to identify why we really want our children to get good grades. Is it because we’re comparing ourselves to other parents to inflate our pride? If so, we have to change and stop comparing our kids to other kids.

The head section was about writing down a vision, your core values, and goals for your family.

The hands covered the significance of being hands on in your parenting. It’s viral to keep in mind that we have our children only for a small amount of time. This segment will teach parents to set goals for your children. Then coach them throughout the different stages of their life where they can learn responsibility and become effective adults.

The habits involved having alone time with the Creator, praying for your spouse and children, studying scriptures, and forgiving and extending grace.

I really loved the idea of having family values and writing down a mission statement for the direction you want your family to follow. My values are thankfulness, uniqueness, unity, sharing, responsibility, respect, love, justice, integrity, and making a difference. Ken Blanchard recommended to pick four values to describe your family’s values. If I had to choose only four mine would be: thankfulness, love, respect, and integrity. My first value is thankfulness- I stand for being grateful for all the things God has blessed our family with. I want to instill in my kids the importance of praising God for everything He has provided for us. My second value is love- I want to pass down the unconditionally love God has shown me to my kids where my grandkids will one day continue passing down the legacy and they will give away their love to others. My third value is respect- I want to teach my kids to respect their parents and to use their manners. My four value is integrity- I want to exhibit honesty and keeping their word. I noticed that it is also truly difficult in keeping the values to just four values.

Ken Blanchard also stated, “What’s the purpose of your family? What’s your picture of the future? What values will guide your journey? What goals do you want your family members to focus on today?” (Page 56). The purpose of my family is to show my wife and our children the unconditional love of Christ in each and every day. I want to pray over my children lives and pray for their future spouses and I want to begin whenever we know we’re expecting and continue praying for them until I die. I want to instill the importance of studying God’s Word and I want to teach them to pray to their Heavenly Father about their concerns and desires. My picture of my family is to teach them to use manners and responsibility. I want them to make their beds, take turns taking out the trash, mowing the grass, setting the table, and cooking meals to where they are able to become better adults. My goals for my children is to make at least a B letter grade where they can do well in school.

I would recommend this magnificent Focus on the Family book to all parents and people who are wanting to have children at some point in their lives. This book is for men and women and it will be a great resource to read together as a couple. Grandparents could also read and benefit from reading this book. This book will outstandingly influence you and your family in your parenting tactics. I immensely enjoyed reading and learning firsthand about some of the issues the parents have to face and deal with. I also loved the extra everyday people they surveyed and asked about parenting and what they have learned. I also liked what Tricia Goyer emphasized how important prayer is and how she prays for her children by using a neat technique, “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”. She picked out a scripture for each body part and prayed it over their lives. This book has benefited me in learning about parenthood and how to lead my family like Jesus desires me to. I’m not in the target audience for this book. But when the opportunity came for me to join Tricia Goyer’s book launch team, I’m sure glad I did! I’m only twenty-two and not married and I don’t have any children yet. If you could go ahead and pray that I find my wife and we would be bless with having children. I would greatly appreciate it. I choose to review this book because I’m a firm believer in learning from others, who have what you one day are hoping to experience. This book has helped me to see other parent’s success and failures in parenting and how to handle managing a family. This book has changed my life and cause me to discover my values and my vision for my family. I know I will be rereading this book before I have children and making my wife join me in the process. I also realize that my wife and I will have to discuss our values and vision for our family. If you’re looking for a wonderful parenting book, then this book will massively change your life and your family life will be forever improved and impacted for the Kingdom of God!

According to Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary, the definition of the word lead includes the following:

To guide by the hand; as, to lead a child. It often includes the sense of drawing as well as of directing.
To go before and show the way.
To conduct, as a chief or commander, implying authority; to direct and govern; as, a general leads his troops to battle and to victory.

As parents, it is our God-given responsibility to guide our children by the hand, draw them into a relationship with Jesus, go before them to set the example, and to direct them with authority. That is how Jesus led his disciples. And whether you want to admit it or not, that's what parenting is -- discipleship. It is our job to disciple our children by allowing Jesus to disciple us first and then following His example. Sadly, too many children are being lead astray because parents are not the primary influences in their lives. Parents are not leading, not from lack of desire, but from lack of know-how.

I have often heard it said that children don't come with a manual. Well, I disagree. Children do come with a manual -- it's called the Bible. But even those of us who know this as truth often struggle with how to lead our children according to the precepts of our "manual." If you are one of these parents, then Lead Your Family like Jesus may be the perfect commentary for you.

Within the pages of this useful and inspiring book, you'll find 12 principles, divided into 4 categories -- The Heart, The Head, The Hands, and The Habits. The book is designed to help you, the parent, align these 4 areas so that your family functions in a secure, joyful, safe way.

The authors took me on a journey of discovery as I learned more about these principles, read their personal stories, and began to understand how to apply the life of Jesus to my own parenting. There were many times I saw myself or my husband inside these pages. As a parent, it's often very difficult not to know exactly what to do when presented with a challenging behavior or attitude from our kids. Tempers can flare, words can be harsh, disciplining poor behavior, without examining the heart can become the norm.

It's very convicting to realize that you've allowed habits into your family that are potentially destroying your relationships. But believe me, there is help within the pages of God's Word, and this book will help guide you to that truth. There is so much Scripture cited throughout this book to help parents understand not only what would Jesus do, but what He did. And how can we apply what Jesus did to our families. There is solid, practical advice here. Because what we do as parents can have eternal consequences, not only for our kids, but for generations to come.

ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES. Let that sink in for a moment.

If you are a fearful parent -- this book is for you.
If you are a prideful parent -- this book is for you.
If you are a selfish parent -- this book is for you.
If you are a parent without vision for your family -- this book is for you.
If you are an inconsistent parent -- this book is for you.
If you are an engaged, on track, consistent, involved, communicative parent -- this book is even for you.

If you are a parent at all -- this book is for you.

I'll close by sharing a few of my favorite quotes from the book. These little nuggets will give you an idea of what you're in store for when you read Lead Your Family Like Jesus.

Just knowing about the long-term view wasn't enough for Jesus, of course. Everything He did was about the forever benefits, and He calls us to do the same.

If we are to lead our children as He led, we need to focus on His Father as He did.

Leadership is about going somewhere. It's about making a difference. When you lead your family like Jesus, the difference you hope to make is that your children will not only obey you, but also obey God -- and be a beneficial part of His family as well as yours.

The power of solitude, prayer, and the study of Scripture can't be overemphasized. Together they can help us become parents who, like Jesus, are servant leaders.

To serve your children as Christ serves us means honoring God and His commandments and putting the love of Jesus into your parenting. When you do that, you'll leave a positive legacy for your children, their children, and their children's children.

My Review:

First of all, I was wondering how many of you ever read the dedications of a book. Ya know, the part of the book wear the author or in this case authors dedicate the book to someone. The authors really made me smile on this one. It was such a sweet sentiment.

To all parents everywhere who quietly go about the work of pouring their lives and unconditional love into the hearts of their children.

Okay now on to the juicy details........

Ken Blanchard, Tricia Goyer, and Phil Hodges collaborated on this book with each in their own right having families and enough years under their belts raising them to give us all a few pointers on how to get better at doing it ourselves. The authors go about giving us insights into what has worked for them and their families over the years. Putting God first will always, always always lead you down the best path for your family. The authors have also given pause and reflect tips at the end of each chapter. As well as Points to ponder and final thoughts. We need to focus on glorifying God even in leading our families not just in our own personal spiritual walk. If we do this then we will get the best out of our children.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus began not in an ordinary way but in an extraordinary way. Leading our famlies is a burden that should be shared with Jesus, and for Him to lead us. We are to allow Him to lead us and our families in such a way that we glorify Him.
what an exhilarating parenting book to read. it was encouraging. Children are a gift from the Lord, and we are to pass on what is eternal to them.
Four sections are in the book:

The Heart: talking about how the heart, is very specific for our families. What is eternal - what is temporary or what is important? To EGO - edging god out, which is not what we need to do. Yet we also to let God know that we have an audience of one which is God himself.

Part 2: The Head:
This is second part of the book in which our family discovers the family values and the family mission. Next chapter of the book is us as parents saying yes to the best for our children, and no to the rest - deciding on what activities that are important. Last but not least is staying on course - being in God's will for our lives and discerning between a crisis and a bump in the road.

Part 3: The Hands
We as parents need to make the most of every moment of our young child's lives including into their teen and adult years. The next chapter is helping your children succeed whether it is in the toddler years, school years, high school years, and of course directing them into their college years. Last but not least to inspire obedience but not a rebellion in your home.

Part 4: The Habits
Principles 10-11 deal with each parents devotional time, and how important it is for parents to have time with God, and what they can do to study His Word. Last but not least is turnimg our mistakes into opportunties through forgiveness and grace.

This is such an encouraging parenting book to read, and every parent should read it, whether they have young children to college age children.

This book was so incredibly helpful I literally felt a weight lifted after reading Lead Your Family Like Jesus. Three authors with different perspectives came together to create one cohesive book that is both inspirational and informative.

As Christians, everything we do in our life should glorify God, including parenting. How many people have you heard say they wish their was a parenting instruction manual? There is! It’s called the Bible and Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges and Tricia Goyer used this as the foundation of their book and should be the fundamental basis of all parenting.

I found so many things helpful in this book that it’s really hard to sum it all up. I have to say the thing that impacted me the most was Chapter 6: Staying on Course. Principle 6 is “To lead like Jesus, know the difference between a crisis and a bump in the road. ” The example is given of spilled milk. There’s a difference between a true accident and of the child willfully dumping it. I tend to overreact to these situations because I want my house clean and I feel like it’s a constant uphill battle. However, yelling at my kids for an accident damages their spirit and will teach them to hide things from me because I’m unreasonable. It’s hard to remember not to sweat the small stuff and look at the bigger picture.

Another thing that struck me was the concept of having a family vision. It’s almost like a mission statement but for your family. What is your family about? What do you stand for? Having this to focus on gives purpose to actions and helps with making decisions when you have a direction in which you are going.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus is so helpful and simple yet profound at the same time. Every parent should read this amazing book!

Parenting. Frustrating and fulfilling. Heart-wrenching and mind-boggling. Especially if you look at all of the parenting books filled with advice, some of which contradicts each other. But what if all you needed to do to parent well was to lead like Jesus did?

A new “Focus on the Family” book, “Lead Your Family Like Jesus” is filled with wisdom from Ken Blanchard, co-author of The One Minute Manager; Phil Hodges, a lifelong friend of Blanchard and former human resources and industrial relations manager with Xerox Corporation and U.S. Steel; and Tricia Goyer, a best-selling author of more than 30 novels.

This little easy-to-read book offers wisdom, practical principles and personal stories that will help you become a transformed parent. When you follow Jesus’ example and become a servant-leader in your home, your home will become a purposeful, peaceful place. These three authors have practiced what they are teaching in this book. They practically guarantee you more joy and confidence as a parent. Lead Your Family Like Jesus gives 12 parenting principles based on the teachings of Jesus and teaches you how to develop a Christ-centered family. Watch what happens when your children see you acting out the principles Jesus set out for all of us.

Of all of the parenting books in the bookstores today, this is definitely one you will want to have in your home library.

Genre: Parenting

Does your family need a five-star general at the helm? A psychologist? A referee? Ken Blanchard, best-selling co-author of The One Minute Manager and Lead Like Jesus, points to a better role model: the Son of God.

Joined by veteran parents and authors Phil Hodges and Tricia Goyer, renowned business mentor Blanchard shows how every family member benefits when parents take the reins as servant-leaders. Moms and dads will see themselves in a whole new light—as life-changers who get their example, strength, and joy from following Jesus at home.

This user-friendly book’s practical principles and personal stories mark the path to a truly Christ-centered family, where integrity, love, grace, self-sacrifice, and forgiveness make all the difference.

LEAD YOUR FAMILY LIKE JESUS arrived when I struggled with my oldest son. I was ready to wash my hands of him. I read through this book and realized some of the things I did wrong. I responded to his anger with anger. I hope that by reading and rereading this book as well as a lot of prayer, I can lead my son, like Jesus, to the place where he’d serve the Lord willingly, and not be so arrogant and rebellious.

Each one of the three authors have learned some hard lessons about leading a family and they’re willing to teach us by their experiences how to lead a family like Jesus. I loved all the personal stories included in the book.

LEAD YOUR FAMILY LIKE JESUS is not a how to guide. It’s just an open invitation to learn by Jesus’ example and apply what you learn to leading your own family. Every parent would benefit from this book. $13.99 hardcover. 272 pages.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus is a must-read for parents, grandparents, and anyone with children in their lives! This book impacted me greatly. To give you an example of how it impacted me, I have NEVER written, underlined, or highlighted in a book-it just has always seemed wrong. So when I started reading, I had a notepad to take notes. I found I was taking SO MANY notes that I decided to underline (in ink even!) important parts I wanted to remember. This is big for me. So my copy of Lead Your Family Like Jesus is almost all underlined!! There are so many things I want to share with you from the book, but I know I need to keep the length of this post under control, so here are a few of my favorites quotes:
"Leading your family like Jesus starts with being led by Jesus. Being led by Jesus is all about turning to Him, following Him, and knowing He's not only walking beside you on your journey as a parent; He's doing so with tender, loving care."
"Influencing hearts for generations is the true purpose of our parenting."
This one really hit home-on the days you may be stressed, overwhelmed, and short-tempered, "Is this really how you want your kids to remember their home life?"
I also liked the ideas of the Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down game, and the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes prayer method.
Although I've only had this book for a few weeks now, I can already feel a difference in myself and subsequently our household. It is so true that Mom can really set the tone for the family. I can't stress enough what a wonderful parenting book this is-be sure to order a copy for yourself, and let friends and family know about it! Lead Your Family Like Jesus would make a great gift for new parents too!

This book is perfect for any parents who still have children at home!

It is divided into four components -- Heart, Head, Hands, and Habits. In each section, each of the authors discusses the component based on his or her background and position in life. They each open up their hearts to share stories pertinent to the section, and their examples are wonderful opportunities to learn and reflect.

Each component is Biblically strong and includes examples of how Jesus used these components in his ministry. Additional examples are provided from parents who have been there and have learned from the principles shared in the book. Their stories add a great deal of heart and insight to the book.

In addition, each chapter includes actionable exercises, suggestions, or tips for becoming the best possible parent with Jesus as a role model. One of my favorite items is Tricia Goyer's method of praying for her children. She prays for their:

Head - that they will always lift their heads to look to the Lord and that they will allow God to life their heads when they are hurt or discouraged,
Shoulders - so they will learn to let God carry their burdens,
Knees - that they will get on their knees before God regularly, and
Toes - that a community of believers will surround them and keep them on their toes!

This can be easily remembered by thinking of the song "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and is a great reminder of how to pray for each child.

This book will be my gift of choice at all future baby showers!

How do we become the parents that not only teach their children Biblical truths, but model them as well. When I started reading Lead Your Family Like Jesus, I was struck with that thought. How do we teach these principles, how do we show what a servant heart is like? How do we show our children what it is to serve joyfully serve as Jesus did while he was here on earth? How do we bring our children up to love Jesus?

These three authors share four important steps that will help us not only love Jesus, but live for Him and teach our children to love him using our heart, head, hands and habits. Drawing from the parenting experiences, their struggles, their faith they share these important steps and how to implement them in our own families.

Using Jesus as a role model (and what better role model is there), we learn how important it is to focus on the eternal, to be aligned with Jesus and his love for us.

In chapter two Ken shares an acronym EGO for Edging God Out and let me tell you this resonated so much with me! I know I have been very guilty of edging God out with pride and fear. When we edge God out we are separated from Him.

Instead of Edging God Out we should Exalt God Only. Wow. Leading Like Jesus is such a profound and thought provoking book. Filled with wisdom, direction and scriptural references throughout.

I think every parent that wants to raise their children to love Jesus and live as he did should read this book.

I found reading this book a challenge.

Not because of the writing style, or the topic, or even the point of view. I found it hard to read because page after page filled me with conviction of the things I should be doing with my parenting choices and skills and family that I haven't been so far.

Using the combined experiences and knowledge of authors Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges, and Tricia Goyer, this book hits you bang on with the challenge to use Jesus as the role model for our experiences as parents. Looking at the life he led, each chapter encourages you to follow his example - providing to-the-heart questions and ideas to ponder and reflect, as well as offering real-life applications of how to put them into practice.

From simple ideas of how to include more scripture into an already busy day (and not just "get up earlier" which is impossible when your child already wakes up before you!) to how to set visions and priorities for your family - I love that there are so many down-to-earth ideas that are easily implimented into everyday life.

The advice and wisdom of the authors along with the insight of many different parents interjected throughout the book have really encouraged me to use the thoughts presented in order to better myself as a mother. It has been a great starting point for me to move forward in creating a more focused, intentional role as a servant-leader called Mom.

What does it mean to lead? How do I lead effectively? How do I get my children to follow my leading? Parenting is filled with questions. Want to take the guess work out of finding the answers? This is a book filled with practical suggestions for ways to lead your family the way the creator of the family meant for it to be done.
Using Biblical principles, Tricia Goyer, Ken Blanchard, and Phil Hodges take turns sharing from their hearts and their experiences about how parents can turn their families into Christ-centered, God honoring families. They share how parents can do this by examining how a parent’s heart, head, hands and habits can be turned into selfless acts of service to their family, thus giving them the joy and confidence they’ve been looking for in parenting.
You will find this book to be broken down into short manageable chapters for even the busiest of parents. It also offers pauses in reading to offer a time of reflection.
This book is one you will want to keep on your bookshelf for future reference. As a parent of grown children as well as a teenager, I have found that although the principles stay the same, our children go through many stages and changes. Information that may have seemed less pertinent at the first reading will later become applicable and helpful.

This is a leadership book.

This is a child-training book. A book on parenting.

And I love how those two things are meshed together and help me to analyze and express how I want my family to look in the future.

It's all about goals, vision, values, priorities.

You need to see that future picture of success for your family to know what you must do now to get there. By examining your future picture, you can make a plan to implement for success. Jesus must be the foundation for your goals.

I have been using this book to teach our Sunday school class for a while now and we're enjoying it and learning so much about leadership from Jesus! We've all had some lively discussions. We're convicted to "put our egos on the altar" and align our attitudes. I adore having some older couples agree with the book's teachings and describe how they raised their children.

I believe this book especially appeals to men, to dads. It's a leadership book. I know my husband's only reading material is online...or leadership books. This book really targets dads in ways they can understand, especially if they're not regular readers - with bullets, flow charts, pyramids, headings...all this makes it easier to read and comprehend the material.

I cannot recommend this book enough - for everyone - parents, pastors, teachers - anyone who teaches or deals with children or leadership.

At first, I thought, while good, there wasn't really much 'new' or 'revolutionary' inside. I have read a ton of parenting books over the past 8 years, always trying to hone my skills and figure this thing out. I kept reading however, and I am SO glad I did.

Over the past several months, I have been trying to steer us from an authoritarian, "you must obey because I'm your parent" style of parenting to a more grace based, Jesus like, relationships are more important than blind obedience, grace filled family. It is HARD. Hard because it challenges me more, it challenges the way I grew up and the habits I already have in place. But it is also GOOD. Good because I feel like I am doing it more Biblically.

And this book, oh this book, came into my life at just the right time.

It is FULL of takeaway nuggets, real life application, references to the Bible, other parents' experiences, thought provoking questions, and prayers. It is set up to easily do with a book club or small group. There is so much to think about and apply, I can't recommend getting the book enough.

Parenting is singularly one of the most difficult challenges you will ever undertake. You often feel unappreciated, like the bad guy, guilty or that you are doing it wrong. This book is a real encouragement to me, and hopefully to you as well. You should get a copy and request your library get one as well.

“Lead Your Family Like Jesus” is most likely the best book I have read concerning parenting or leadership. The combination of Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges & Tricia Goyer is a perfect blend in viewpoints covering a wide spectrum of parenting. This book really does provide powerful parenting principles from THE CREATOR of families.

This book covers the heart of the parent as it is what truly matters. If your heart is not in line with God, then your priorities become misaligned with what is important. Then there is the head which is where the parenting ultimately comes from. In order to lead your family, you must as the head of your family serve.

There is much more to the book than just being a serving leader though. The book really instills the principles that Jesus tried to show His disciples in the gospels. Leading through example. If you desire your children to have a strong work ethic, then you as a parent show them what that strong work ethic looks like. If you want your children to show love to each other, then you as a parent show love to them and others.

This is a book that I will definitely keep around for a long time and I can see myself sharing with other parents.

Great teachings for parents!
So many wonderful morals, value and core beliefs are taught from birth, so they are instilled in our children to create happier and healthier kids. We teach our kids right from wrong, right from the earliest moments of their lives. So why not humility, love, empathy, compassion? They are morals we want our kids to have but sometimes start too late at teaching them or enforcing them.
The one thing I have really taken from the book, with my oldest about to turn 18, is I am doing something right. From the teachings in the book, you learn sticking to your guns is a huge part of making sure your children learn. It has been something I had issues with initially, those cute faces got to me every time, but it has stopped and I learned to stick to my guns. Since that time, my kids are not so quick to lip off or behave in an un-approving manner. They know I will not step down from decision, and have taught them there is good and bad consequences to every choice. It helps them see the bigger picture in the end.
So I think not only new parents, but parents of older children can benefit from reading this book. Our kids don't come with manuals, but books like this one sure help get through some of those tougher moments, and with our morality in tact.

This book speaks to something I’ve been struggling with, intentional parenting.

Sometimes, I just get swept up in the busy nature of life. It’s funny how many days and months can pass before I stop and realize I need to re-evaluate. I need to constantly keep my kids before me in my heart and in prayer. Everyday.

I love the many stops in the book called Pause and Reflect.

I need to pause and reflect more often!

The book is less about changing your kids and more about changing your heart to reflect Jesus.

When I read the book I realized I might be inspiring disobedience. Ever have those moments, when you are so tired of the stubbornness that you don’t stand your ground. Let’s just say I did very poorly on the how are you doing quiz.

I overreact. I am inconsistent. I negotiate lower standards of behavior to avoid a hassle. I sometimes match anger with anger.

I can improve. I think there is something in this book that will touch any parent right where they need it. There are many practical applications (like crafting a family vision) and stories that are easy to relate to.

Best of all, the authors continue to draw you back to the best leadership model there is, Jesus.

I have to admit I was expecting a lot from this book. I am familiar with one of the co-writers, Tricia Goyer--she is always an amazing author. I was expecting a lot of Christian principles and Bible verses, and I will say that there was a lot of that. Plenty of practical advice was included, and possibly if you have never read a Christian leadership/family book, this may be a good one for you.

My biggest problem with this book is that it was essentially a Christian version of so many books out there. Bible verses were there, but not included nearly as much as I would like. There were plenty of stories, but all too often I felt like I was reading a secular book with moral principles. I know that the premise was to lead your family like Jesus, but I didn't see the Biblical correlation as much as I desired. For me, this was a well-written book, but it did not meet the needs that I had. You may have a different experience as mine is merely a personal opinion.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus came to me at just the right time. It was as if Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges, and Tricia Goyer were speaking truth and grace into my heart. Quotes like the one above nestled into my mind and whispered encouragement. As I read each chapter I found myself nodding and underlining and writing in the margins.

Each of these authors has "been there, done that." They've learned some hard lessons about leading a family and they graciously pour out their own experiences to invite others to join them in leading families like Jesus. I also love all the personal stories interjected into the book. Women and men who share how they seek to lead in their homes like Jesus ... honest about the struggles and humble in the successes.

This book is not a how to guide, though. There's no list to check off or steps to follow. Rather, it's an invitation to learn more about Jesus and then apply what you learn in your home. I can't think of one family who wouldn't benefit from the principles in this book.

Have you thought seriously about the vision you have for your family? If you would like some guidance on how to shape that vision and see it come to reality this is the book for you. The conversational instruction of biblical concepts make this book easy to read and very easy to apply. This book asks intriguing thought provoking questions that cause you to pause and consider the status of your family against God's standard. It also causes those who lead a family to evaluate their relationship with Christ and the impact of that relationship on the ones who need them most. You will enjoy hearing from three authors who each bring a unique and different perspective to the topic of leading your family. So what does your family stand for? Do you know? What does your family need from you? If you have pondered the answers to any of those questions get the book and read it. Get ready to be challenged and encouraged!

What an unexpected pleasure!

This brief, 187 pages, book on how to lead your family like Jesus is a great summary of family leadership. I read Ken Blanchard years ago when I was working in management and teaching marketing and managment at the college level. This is a great blend family, leadership and management and really has a strong scriptural basis.

I found this helpful not just in family life but it provoked a lot of thinking for me on the life of the church. Maybe the most important statement in the book I thought was "Leading your family like Jesus starts with being led by Jesus." There is a great section on what leaders provide in each of the learning stages that I thought was very helpful.

This is a great book for family leaders, both men and women, pastors and other church leaders.

I LOVE Tricia's response that no ones life is a Pinterest board. That is so true in mine. I can't get anything to turn out like a photo! Not my house, my cooking, my children's appearance, my crafts.
Living in the hear and now, the reality of it is what is so important. We are unique and for us personally that means a larger family, and dynamics that don't always allow for things to be picture perfect.
This book gives you the blessing of "Saying yes to the Best and No to the Rest", and biblically backing it up.

This is one of those books that you can read snippets here and there and still get insight. One of those books you will shelve and keep and pass on to your own grown children to use. Modeling Jesus, that is what it is all about.

One of the greatest lessons that I received from this book is that I need to continually turn over my parenting to Him in PRAYER - prayer for forgiveness, for my children, & grandchildren, & prayer for redemption! I need to be gentle with my children, but at the same time hold them accountable & remember that my children are not a reflection of who I am - God gives us all free will, and He can change hearts if we allow Him to!

Thanks to Focus on the Family & Litfuse Publicity Group for providing this book free of charge so that I could preview it & post a review - I can honestly say that this is the best book I have read in 2013!

Really good book. Most would probably give this book 5 stars. A lot of the principles and vision in this book I am very familiar with so I didn't feel like I learned anything, but I also read leadership and business books for fun and apply the wisdom to how I raise and lead my family. Both my husband and I are leaders and visionaries, but this would be a fantastic book for anyone who that isn't their gift, and they recognize their responsibility in leading their family intentionally. I believe strongly this is a very needed book for today's parents.

Lead Your Family like Jesus, by Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges and Tricia Goyer
Great book full of practical ideas, to be servant leaders of Godly households. This book will encourage you to be the best parent you can be. Challenge you to set goals, values and live with Christ as the cornerstone of your family. I really enjoyed all the personal stories they helped to bring the teaching alive and made them more real. The practical ideas show you how to apply them to your family. I would highly recommend this book to all parents.

Great book for those that want to understand the leadership qualities that make good leaders and how to see how those leadership principles were applied through Jesus' ministry.
