Having heard the author speak last year and this being the DC Reads book for 2013, I had high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, as interesting at the topic of Douglas's 20 years as a DC resident is, the book is not very well written and not well organized. I seem to just now have a random collection of facts and impressions, rather than a narrative about this time here. Worth the read, but just barely.

A very interesting read about the life of Frederick Douglass when he lived in Washington DC. I learned as much about DC history and post-Civil War politics, as about Douglass himself. Kudos to author John Muller who I had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with at this year's Gaithersburg Book Festival.
