Review of Losing Connor by Amanda Alberson Book provided by author for honest review. As hard as it’s going to be this is a no spoiler review….
I honestly don’t even know where to start with this review. I finished this book many days ago and have since read several others, but I’m still at a loss for how to put into words how this book wrecked me. Anyone who follows my FB page or my Blog knows that I am a huge fan of Jasinda Wilder and Falling Into You has to be my favorite book of the year, maybe even of all time…. Losing Connor wrecked me much like FIY did. While Losing Connor isn’t a romance like FIY, it is still so drenched in love that you can literally feel it bleed from every page.
This is the part where I just don’t know how to NOT spoil things… Amanda did a phenomenal job at her character development. You can feel every single emotion that Cassie goes through. When people say that authors cut themselves open and bleed the words onto the page; THIS book is what they mean by that. I can only imagine the scars this story left on the author’s heart.
Declan is totally swoon worthy. He can be the best and the worst at any given time. He can run hot and cold. I found myself torn between falling in love with him and wanting to throttle him. There are so many more things I want to say, but that no spoilers rule is keeping my lips zipped. I will share one of the many lines that made me want to love Declan….
“Like the way I feel about ya, girl. No one can beat that. Not with fists, not with ignorant words, or weapons, or a whole army.”
I know I didn’t even mention the person whom the book is named for in this review, but I know I will spoil if I do… so just know you will love Connor with your entire heart.
Okay, this was a lot more of my feelings that the technicals… so I will say, the book is very well written, it is edited quite nicely, and the author has a firm understanding of how to smoothly transition between different timeframes. I give this book a full 5 stars… really more if I could. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did; don’t forget the tissues.
An emotionally-charged rollercoaster, heartbreaking at times, uplifting and funny at others, Losing Connor is the fiction debut of Amanda Alberson (@albersona). I highly recommend this novella to anyone looking for a fast-paced but intense examination of love, heartbreak and ultimate triumph.
First and foremost, this is not a book I would normally pick for myself to read. But, having become acquainted with Ms. Alberson through Twitter, I raised my hand when she asked for someone to give the 99.5 percent-finished story a beta read.
I'm glad I did, because Losing Connor is compelling. Cassie Coven is a well-drawn, complex lead character whose life has never really recovered from the decision at 17 to put her baby boy up for adoption. That ended Cassie's relationship with Declan, the father who she still loves.
Events bring Declan and Connor, their son, back together with Cassie, and the joy of their early relationship is revealed to be in sharp contrast to a current situation rife with tension and distrust. The story unfolds in a series of flashbacks intercut with current events, a format which works very well and draws the reader deeply into the plot.
As always, I don't do spoilers, but allow me to say I found the conclusion of this story to be surprising and satisfying, and I congratulated Ms. Alberson for making some bold choices. I've gone over the now-finished story and the changes made to the beta I read are minor and do nothing but improve an already strong work.
One of the most pleasurable things to come out of my relatively recent foray into fiction writing has been meeting and interacting with new people (my use of 'meeting' mostly means through Social Media, especially Twitter, as I'm a self-described hermit) such as Ms. Alberson.
Thanks to those virtual 'meetings,' I've had the pleasure of reading some wonderful Indie fiction, books that I frankly would never have known about or picked up otherwise. Losing Connor is one of those gems.
Man oh man! This is on of those stories that will just tear your at your heart strings. It is an emotional roller coaster. So if you get emotional then get the tissues ready! When I first started the book I knew I would eventually cry I just didn't know when! Losing Connor has heartbreak, love, uplifting, and characters you will love.
The characters felt so real, that it made the book so amazing to read. The story line was really well-written. I liked how you would go back and forth between the past and the present so you didn't get the whole story all at once.
And let me say Delcan is one of them irish sweethearts that no matter how he acts you still love him just like Cassie does. Cassie makes a grown up decision at 17 and she nor Delcan has ever fully recovered especially Cassie! Then one phone call changes everything.....
The ending was not what I was expecting even though in the back of my mind I kept going oh I hope Delcan and Cassie and rekindle a fire. This story is very uplifting, and makes you want to hold your little ones tight.
My favorite quote in this book:
" It taught me to grab ahold of them ya love, and never ever let 'em go. Cling to 'em all ya can today, 'cuz they may not be there tomorrow."
I so wish I could write more, but then I would be giving away all kinds of spoilers. Just go and pick yourself up this book, you will not be disappointed.
oh my goodness what a book! I love the fact that this is a story that you can understand and relate to! This book talks of the present and takes you back to beginning of the relationship of Declan (PURRR Irishman) and Cassandra (Cassie).
Cassie an outsider is minding her own business when a car comes out of nowhere and out jumps Declan. They instantly had a connection. Cassie finds herself constantly thinking of Declan, looking at him, going weak in knees when she sees him. Declan attracts EVERYONE but he only has eyes for one.. Catching Cassie before she fumbles down a flight of stairs is what seals the fate.
Declan and Cassie are together all the time. Much to her overbearing father who has nothing nice to say about his daughter. Declan and Cassie go through alot together at such a young age. Cassie is 17 and ends up pregnant. Trying to decide what is best for her, Declan, and the baby is a tough choice.
Cassie and Declan have to make some life altering choices, that will literally haunt then the rest of there lives.
This is a book of love, hate, deception, honesty. I was happy, sad and mad all at the same time. Found myself tearing up by the end I was crying.. amazing book! Looking foward to book 2 and any other reads! thank you Amanda for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
This story is saddening yet promising reminder to hold on to what you love, as it may not be there tomorrow. It is a must read and definite reread and I eagerly await Amanda Alberson’s second book!
I’m quite literally in shambles. I didn’t move from my bed from page 20 to the end. It was so gripping I needed to know what happened next. It’s amazing how I fell in love with the characters and cared so deeply for them in only 160 pages. I lived for the metaphors used to express Cassie’s feelings. I cannot move on after the ending. The whole book I found my self hoping for Connor to heal and for Cassie and Declan to be married. I was wishing so hard for their happiness and the ending really caught me off guard. It was tragic and heartbreaking but it summed up the tale perfectly. I can already tell that this book is going to follow me around and I will be thinking about it for weeks.

Sometimes there are stories that just have to be told. There’s no greater motivation than the fact that the story is clamoring to be written. The reader may find their own moral of the story, they might be able to extrapolate it into their lives and learn something from it, it may even feel like it was written simply because they were meant to read it. But at the end of the day, it’s still just a story that demanded to be told.
Losing Connor is such a story.
Cassandra Coven is a girl broken by choices and by life. She’s seen so much loss in her short life and she’s devoted her life to helping kids work through their own struggles at a juvenile detention center. Even through the pain we can see that she’s sassy, strong and funny. But mostly she’s just very sad, riddled with panic attacks and completely unable to allow herself to move on from the past.
Declan McGonagall is the love of Cassie’s life. He saunters into her life when they are in high school and promptly steals her heart the moment she lays eyes on him. But the thing he spends the majority of his life trying to convince Cassie of, is that she is also the love of his life. Declan is a whirlwind of romance and risk with a heart as big as the world. He’s an Irish charmer, Declan is.
Together they are beyond sweet. They are that couple you daydream about being a part of. They are sappy and hopelessly in love and you end up loving every minute of it. Until it all falls apart.
Amanda Alberson has masterfully and tenderly constructed a heart-wrenching story that left me absolutely gutted. Her writing is vivid, poetic and resonated deeply with me on many levels. The characters are crafted in such a way that you have no hope but to fall in love with them all, even the ones you wish weren’t there. Even the ones that get in the way are so vibrant that you can’t help but admire what they lend to the overall scenery. Alberson tells this story by jumping back and forth from present day to 5 years previously and although you’re left guessing at the beginning of every chapter what time period you’re in, it doesn’t take away from the overall story.
If this was Alberson’s first book, I can hardly wait to see what she has in store for us next. If it contains even half of the soul and exquisite writing as Losing Connor, then we’re all in for a very big treat indeed.
*I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!* “Losing Connor’ is a book that impressed me. It’s a short book- about 140 pages- but it helds so many things between these pages that it’s overwhelming. And I loved it. I read it in one sit and loved every minute of it. The scenerio may seem a clichee. Two teenagers fall in love, the girl gets pregnant. This time, the scenerio changes a bit. The girl is the one who refuses to rise the child, even though the boy loves her and wants to be with her forever. I have to say that I really appreciated this change. Usually, the boy is the one that leaves. But Amanda chose to be different and slightly changed the story. There is so much dramatism and emotions in this book that it’s overwhelming sometimes. I couldn’t not cry! I mean, serious, the feelings were so well described that I felt every.single.thing. that Cassandra “Cassie” Coven felt. So yes, “Losing Connor” is a huge emotional rollercoaster that will make you cry. The story is very captivating from the start. After I started it, I found myself looking forward to reading the book again every time I had to eat or talk with my mom. I was really curious to see what happens between Cassie and the lovely Declan. And I wanted to see what will happen with Connor as well. I liked the way Amanda told us Cassie and Declan’s story. One chapter was in the present and the next was 5 years earlier. It was very interesting! I didn’t agree with Cassie and her decision of giving her baby. I mean, that was Declan’s kid too! If he proposed to her and he got a job and her mother could’ve help them out, then things weren’t so complicated as she thought. I was pretty happy with the ending. Except… well, yeah. Connor. I wish… well, I should shut up. If I’d tell you what I wish, it will be a huge spoiler. “Losing Connor’ is an amazing book about mistakes, second chances, love and drama. It showed me that true love enver dies and it always wins. Rate: 5 stars out of 5
Loved this book. It was a great quick read at 138 pages on my Ipad. It grabbed your attention, drew you in, broke your heart, and put it together again. Quite the accomplishment for s short novel. Done Wonderfully.
This book pulled my strings and had me engulfed as soon as I started it. The story was real. It was something that I felt could have truly happened to a live person had this been a memoir. I connected with the characters and fell in love with each of them.
The book starts off with flashbacks. Every other chapter you flash to five years previous. It really gave you a feeling of what eld up to the point you start the book at. I am trying REALLY hard not to give anything away about the book because it would ruin it, and its just THAT good. *Shakes Head* At the young age of 17 Declan, our Irish hottie, and Cassie have a decision to make. Or, well, Cassie does. Declan isn’t given much of a choice. Their life changes and that is debatable for the good or bad. But 5 years later, one call changes their lives again.
This book is heart wrenching. I made the mistake of reading it right before I felt for work and was left reeling my whole shift. My heart was in shatters. I saw it coming, but I didn’t. It was one of those books. & the ending! I was very happy to have what ending we did , but wished we would have gotten a little more. I felt like it was a little rushed in the oh-so short epilogue. Regardless it was a wonderful read and you should definitely read it if you are looking for a great read that plucks your heart strings.
*I received an ARC in return for an honest review*
If I could give this book more stars then I would!
This book left had me so gripped, I was feeling so sad for Cassandra, but so brave of her decision. Then the other half was saying no NO don't do it, you got a good man there!! I was all over the place.
Declan, what a guy! every word that came out of his mouth later proved to be true, the strong, sure, resilient guy she could have had by her side.
No one can live their life in retrospect, don't we wish we could? I was so involved in this story that I felt part of the journey, now THAT is a sign of a BRILLIANT author!!
I can only say, I was texting my friend Philomena saying "OMG" and she was texting "What? What?"
I made the mistake of reading some of this sat in a public car park waiting for my hubby to come out of the barbers.......sniffling wreck I was!
I left the final bit to read when I got home and hid away quietly to finish it. I literally held my Kindle to my chest and blubbered. This story touched my emotions. It made me think and dwell on the subject matter. I swung between cheering Cassandra for her decision to hating her for what she put Declan through. I think the Father should have more of an involvement in these decisions. So I felt like I was on my soap box shouting at Cassandra sometimes.
Then, when things turned for the worse and they had to meet because of their son, I was as tense as Cassandra and then as ANGRY as Declan. Blimey, I was a mess at the end.
I would sooooo recommend this book. I bloody loved it.
I absolutely loved reading this book! There is so many things that I just loved in this novel. Firstly, there is sweet Cassie. I really felt so bad for her and her decision to give her baby up for an adoption. I understood completely why she felt it was the right thing to do, and the family she choose was amazing. Cassie also battles anxiety attacks and even though she does, she still fights through them with the help of Declan. Now Declan was a love/hate relationship with me throughout the entire book. The author gave us past and present with these two and I thought he was perfect in the past. I also understood why Declan felt the way he did about Cassie making the choice to give up baby Conner, but his actions really broke my heart. This book is very emotional. There were times my heart broke more and more, and other times I wanted to scream at the situation. I also had a moment where I didn’t like what Cassie was doing and I did not want her doing what she did!! But that’s what made this story. I love having that emotional pull and I promise it never stopped until the last page. I highly recommend reading this and be prepared to have a few tissues as well! Awesome job Amanda! I loved it!
Loved it! Debuting author Amanda Alberson hit a home run right out of the park! Definitely a 5 star book! It's fast pace, and intense. At 17 Cassandra Coven falls in love with Declan McGonagall, a sexy boy with a devilish Irish accent! They get pregnant and Cassandra makes the hard decision to give the baby up for adoption wanting nothing more than to give him the life he deserves, Declan doesn't agree with the decision and walks away from her. 5 years later both Declan and the baby she gave up come back into her life. This is her story of love, and loss, and heartbreak. Amanda writes flawlessly, making you fall in love with sweet Cassie, and the heart stopping Irish boy Declan. Chapter by chapter you are taken from the present to the past and back again. This was an excellent and unique way to tell this heartbreaking story. Congrats Amanda on your wonderful debut! I can't wait to see what the future holds for you! I look forward to reading future work!
Dear lord get me off this emotional roller coaster. This book was really good and ohh I think I may have cried throughout the whole book. I just finished it not even 5 minutes ago and I still have tears running down my face. Oh boy. Besides the tears this was a well written book and the characters were great. I am glad that they seemed so real, because if they seemed fake it wouldn't have been a good story. So just another warning, make sure you have a box of tissues ready because this story will not only break your heart but it will heal it at the same time.
The only thing I didn't like was the going from present to past in separate chapters. It drove me nuts lol. One chapter would be all present then the next would be all past. I realize why it was done this way but ehh I am not a big fan of it being done like that in any book. But it still didn't take away from the book. So overall I loved it.
10 stars for me this book was AMAZING!!!! Everything about it I should if guessed by the title that I needed several boxes of tissues I'm not sure I stopped crying throughout this book I definitely could NOT put it down I didn't want it to end I want to read more more more please!!!! Declan and Cassie were perfect for each other from the start there love was epic but one mistake leads to life altering changes that rip them apart I understand both points of views in this case but ultimately I though Cassie really did what was best in the long run and to make such a beautiful sacrifice just goes to show you there is hope out in the crazy world of ours ahhhh Declan I just loved him so much he really loved Cassie more than life and I'm glad of the HEA let me just say I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen I'm am def a FAN 4 LIFE!!!!!
This book is amazing!!! It was a quick read that pulls you into the story of Cassie and Declan from page 1. This is not just a love story. It is a story of first love, true and utter heartbreak and healing. You cannot help but fall in love with Cassie and root for her to become a whole person again. She has been broken down by her domineering father. Her mother is not really a source of support. Cassie finds everything that she is missing and needs in Declan. He becomes her lifeline and the only true love of her life. As with teenagers, feelings and hormones get in the way and Cassie becomes pregnant at 17. The journey that both Cassie and Declan go through is something that most adults could not endure. This is a truly well written story. It is a tear-jerker. And I promise you will be so glad that you gave the book a chance.
If I was only allowed to use one word to review this book, WOW would be the word that I would use.
The author doesn't mess around with a slow introduction to the characters. She just jumps right in with both feet and I love that. I usually don't care for books that jump back and forth in time like this one does. They can often be confusing to follow or interrupt the flow of the story, but Amanda Alberson did an amazing job. I often found myself excited for the next "flash back" chapter so I could find out more about what led to the heartache that Cassie and Declan are currently facing.
*WARNING* This book will tug at your heartstrings and have you reaching for a box of kleenex.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
When I read the blurb for Losing Connor by Amanda Alberson I did not expect what I read. This story is beautifully written, what is 17 year old Cassandra Coven to do when she sees the new Irish hottie at school Declan McGonagall. Well .. What any 17 year old does.. Gets pushed off the stairs so said hottie will catch ya! Lol . Both having bad home lives connects the two together. I loved how Amanda meshed past a present tense together, this book is heart wrenchingly beautiful. It has heart break, sadness, love, and an HEA. But before the HEA you gotta cry a bit but ut will be worth the cry.I would give this amazing book 4.5 stars. So if you havent read Losing Connor .. You sooo need to! Go ONE-click it! You won't regret it!
Congratulations Amanda Alberson! Awesome book and your first!? 2 thumbs up, a snap & clap ;)
It grabbed me by the heart from the first chapter and didn't let go..Been a while since I enjoyed a book this much, thank you.. loved all the characters and they were so easy to relate to. I remember that age. I too fell in love with Declan, what a romantic for such a young one. I rode high on the coaster of happiness with Cassie and Dec, and crashed down with them when the decision was made about Connor..I felt their loss..then when they reunite to help Connor and we meet Rory, wow Cassie sure can find the prince charmings! but the ending being bitter sweet to me with the loss of Connor :( Such I wide range of emotions felt with this book. Couldn't put it down.

I cannot believe that this is Amanda's first book. This book was beautifully written, captivating, thought provoking, and heart breaking. I loved each and every one of the characters. It is a quick read, which turned out to be a great thing because I could not put it down. I stayed up until 3 in the morning reading it! I'm seriously considering contacting Amanda and asking her if she plans to write more of this story. I would love to read about what happened between the last chapter and the epilogue. Amanda is truly gifted and I can't wait to read her future work. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book after reading a review on a blog. I read this book in about 4 hours. I could not put my Kindle down. I got lost in the world of Cassie and Dec. As I was reading I kept placing myself in the story. Amanda has a way of making each and one of the character's feelings so raw that as the reader you can feel it. I cried, laughed and held my hand to my heart on more than one occasion. It definitely a story of first & young love, decision making and heartbreaking moments a parent should never have to go through. I can't wait to read the next novels. I am DEFINITELY a fan of Amanda's work.
Oh My Goodness!!!!! I loved this book! It was heartbreaking and beautiful. I was hurting for Connor and Cassie and Declan the whole book. Children, even when faced with illness or hardships, always have such a positive outlook to life. We should all learn from that.
The writer successfully took us from past to present throughout the whole book and it worked seemlessly without being confusing. I don't want to say much more for fear of revealing too much. But I do see a long hangover from this book. I truly look forward to reading more from this author.
If I could give this book ten stars I would have. It took me a little bit to get into it. I got there, and once I got there I loved this book. I finished it by staying up all night I couldn't put it down. Cass and big D drove me crazy, they love each other but they drive each other crazy. Its the way a real high school relationship is. Amanda Alberson did a fantastic job in writing this book. I did the ugly cry for the last like 3 chapters. I never ugly cry in books anymore. I highly highly recommend this book!!!!
Wonderful, gut wrenching, tear jerking! This book made me ugly cry! I loved Cassie, but I loved Declan more. I know Cassie did what she thought was right, and it probably was the best decision for everyone, but it just killed me that Declan was hurting so much! Rory was another great character. He loved Cassie and was always there for her. I am so glad I got the chance to review this book. Definitely a must read!!! I will be watching this author!
Interesting read about a young girl who finds out she's pregnant by her high school boyfriend. She then decides to give the baby up for adoption so it has a chance at a great life she cant provide. However things don't end up as she wanted. This is a great emotional story about love, loss and the unknown. My only complaint is how quick the story ended, it felt a little rushed to me. I would have liked to see more about their reconciliation. Overall great read.
This book deals with a hard topic adoption and goes back and forth between real time and the past. I enjoyed this because you learned the back story which allowed you to learn about the characters. This was a wonderful story that tugged on my heart because what happened and happens has to be very hard to go through. I recommend this for anyone and be prepared to cry and smile. A new fan for this author.
I was having a hard time getting into any books and someone recommended this one to me and I'm so glad they did. It's an amazingly good book. It kept me intrigued from the beginning. I love the way the author tells the story by having a 'present' chapter and then a 'past' chapter back and forth through the book. It was an interesting way to keep the story flowing and give all the back story at the same time.
Love, love loved it. An emotional story from the very beginning.when Cassie gets pregnant at a young age she decides to give the baby up for adoption. But this is not what Declan has in mind. Losing the baby and Declan, Cassie tries to move on. But life has other plans. Connor gets sick and Cassie and Declan must come together to face past demons. A must read.
A powerful and emotionally wrenching story of loss, and choices, and time. I find it very hard to believe this is a first work. I am impressed and looking forward to more from this author in the future.
