Part of the educational and beautifully produced Cultural China Series, this book focuses on the cultural relics which remain of one of the oldest civilizations in the world. It gives a brief account of the 12 types of relics unearthed in China so far, and discusses them as representative objects which provide a glimpse into China’s past. In vivid color, with illustrations and photographs accompanying the text throughout.
The book has a lot of information, but, even for a nonfiction book, it's really quite dry. Not to mention, the half star dock comes from the fascinatingly large amount of typos.
This is a highly subjective account of Chinese cultural history with obvious signs of political slant in the text to the point where the data is incorrect in places and the statements about various periods are spurious and the rich history of China is poorly represented. There are a handful of images that I have not seen produced in other similar volumes, which makes it worth a brief browse for scholars looking for similar examples of object typologies.
