Featuring historical background and critical analysis on all of William Shakespeare's known plays, this book explores the tradition and living legacy of the world's most famous playwright.
What a nifty book. Parsons and Mason clearly know their stuff. This is an intelligent but easily accessible look at all of Shakespeare's surviving plays, discussing in a few pages (with big colour photographs) a number of important 20th century English productions. The introduction makes it clear that this is a book by academics but with a guide to presenting the plays easily. Picking particular textual cruxes, major characters and set-pieces, we explore the different ways of performing the roles, and as a result come out far more knowledgeable about the Bard OFF the page, and ON the stage.
The consultant editors of this magnificent large hardbound coffee table book were Keith Parsons and Pamela Mason. It blows your mind with pictures of major actors in Shakespeare productions, primarily, in Enmgland over the 20th Century. Each section dealing with a different play by Shakespeare. All 38 of William Shakespeare's plays are included. Fabulous full-color photographs in many cases.
