Clarice "Shocker" Ares retired from a sensational, pro-boxing career to focus on her family and growing mechanic business. Mostly written in the first person, Shocking Circumstances is a book about Clarice, also know as the “Shocker”, a retired boxing legend that left her golden days to spend quality time with her family and pursuit other business interests. Unfortunately for our main character, her times as a boxer are not over when she needs to fight (literally) her way out of prison after a drug related incident.
I must say this book had a lot of action in it. If you like the Mexican Cartels and drug crimes, then you should give this one a shot. Definitely not your typical thriller, showing a more raw side of prison life and crime.
The characters are interesting and well described and the story itself can easily hold your attention without being repetitive or boring.
One of the negative parts is the dialogue between the characters. Seems, somewhat, unnatural at times.
In conclusion, I recommend this title to anyone who likes loads of action in a book, you won’t be bored with it.
Shocking Circumstances is the compelling story of Clarice Ayers, AKA the Shocker. Clarice is a woman who begins her tale with a lot going for her. She’s a professional boxer, a tattoo artist, a custom-car mechanic, wife, and step-mother. I’ll wager she’s one of the strongest women you’ll ever meet on the printed page. She’s fought hard in life and has achieved a level of success that she’s just beginning to enjoy.
As it turns out, all this means she has a lot to lose. When Clarice’s path crosses that of a drug smuggling cartel, her hard-won world is snatched away from her in one violent instant.
Chris Roy brings a powerful new voice to crime fiction. Clarice Ayers is the most unique, realistically fleshed-out character you’ll find in the genre today. The story is told in her voice, and make no mistake, she owns this story. You’ll hear her unique voice in your head. You’ll know this character inside and out – warts and all – like you are experiencing her life first-hand. You’ll feel the punches she throws as well as the ones she endures.
Not only will you know the character, Chris Roy’s writing style will place you in the scenes where the story takes place. Whether in the boxing ring, the artist’s home, the garage, or a maximum-security prison, the locations are painted on the page with words in a way that puts you there with Clarice.
Shocking Circumstances has it all, a unique character you can’t help but love, the highest of stakes, a relentless plot. In short, Shocking Circumstances is a rare masterpiece of gritty crime fiction. I give it my highest recommendation.
The best part? He's not dropping the mic yet. I hear there are already more stories about The Shocker loaded up and ready to go. As exceptional as Shocking Circumstance is, it may just be the hard right that's setting us up for the left hook. Cannot wait.
