Leontii Holender lives in the sleepy little town of Greenville, South Carolina. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was raised all across the United States. She has lived mostly in the southern states with large cities. She's called New Orleans, Memphis, and Atlanta home, just to name a few. She moved into the area in order to help take care of her ill mother and has since found herself with a plethora of free time to write.
Leontii has been writing for about eight years now and is a full-time author. The writing bug bit her rather early in her life and since she discovered she enjoyed it, she hasn’t stopped. She started writing short stories in high school and has since moved on to focus on novels. She likes writing erotic fiction the most and tends to lean towards strong elements of horror, suspense, fantasy, mythos, and the paranormal.
Okay, so I have never heard of this author before and I have looked to see if they have published anything else, but I couldn’t find anything… which really surprised me, as the quality of writing was brilliant
Maithe is a Halfling, part demon/part human, he has been trained for years to serve humans, but he has no intention of giving up his freedom… until he meets Astle. Astle has set his sights on having Maithe as his and Maithe doesn’t put up too much of a fight, until someone comes after Astle and then all bets are off.
This is an incredibly detailed, slightly enthralling novella that is rich in world building and is a joy to read. Maithe is malicious, holds humans in contempt and sneers at those who want to become bound to a human, and he has no intention of becoming bound and dreams of freedom. Astle is a prince of Rausol and wants Maithe. He sets out to master him, but the choice is forced when Astle is attacked and Maithe must come to his rescue, which leads to events that just might break them all.
This book was great, right from the start. We are introduced to the life on Terra in vivid detail as a guard is riding through the streets, she comes upon a beggar telling a story and she stays to listen, and this is where we are told the story of Terra, Gods, humans and demons, and how the Halflings came to be. This story was woven brilliantly; it is full of detail throughout, so you can picture in your mind the actions as the story unfolds. The characters are wonderful and are fleshed out quite well, but Maithe is the main focus as it’s mainly from his POV, I would have liked to have gotten inside Astle’s head as well but I can’t complain.
This book has quite a lot of sensuality to it, even when there is no sex it lingers in the background, teasing our senses, and lulling us into feeling secure about what to expect from the sex and then bam!! We have an explosion of passion that is more like a frenzy, as they both clash together, biting, kissing and sucking and trying to take what they want.
The storyline is great, the action brilliant and yes some danger as well. There is a surprise as well for Maithe that he learns about his lover during an intimate moment. So all in all an enjoyable book that I will recommend to those who love fantasy, hot explosive sex, danger, unexpected surprises and a happy ending.
I want to start with a positive. This book is a sci-fantasy/paranormal book. The world building in Maithe's Surrender was of quite a high standard. The descriptions of Solindira were in depth and the country's spiritual lexicon and beginnings were outlined well. The character's looks and clothing, once again, very in depth and also outlined well.
Now, the not so positive. All the characters were 1 dimensional. The MC's were both quite unpleasant. Maithe, a half human/demon, was surly but needy. Astle, a prince from a neighbouring area, was sour and violent. He had previously abused Maithe's older brother, Luin, and the King of Solindira had taken Luin away from Astle. Astle was quite aggressive - this is M/M and ALL the (anal) sex was without lube, this is at least painful, at worst a physically violent act. On the second non-lube anal encounter, Astle organised a horse ride into town for the pair. Really, riding a horse after non-lube anal sex - 'his body bounced and quivered with the force of the exertion of the horse that he rode.' OMG. This was after Maithe's inner thoughts of - 'The warm water soothed his sore muscles, bruises, and abrasions. Thanks to Astle, he had quite a number of them.' Because Astle had rammed his head into the headboard of the bed! Unpleasant. There was also a bit of blood play as well, not a problem for me as there is at least one demon in the book, they bite. Just be warned.
I don't know who edited this book, but it did not seem as if anyone had, because incorrect tense, redundant and incorrect words littered the pages - 'Did his sibling really thing that Astle cared about pleasantries?' And - 'The prince's warm laughed filled the quiet space' for example.
With better characterizations, editing and decent direction, this book could have been interesting. However, it left me hollow. What concerned me most was the sex, which was not to make a point about violence or unpleasant sexual acts, it was made out to be titillating and sexy - it was not, and, it was of actual concern to me personally.
Since I’m used to the Siren Publishing production, I’m not surprised about the tone of this fantasy novel: it’s a little bloody, very much erotic, and not really politically correct. Even if used and abused, Maithe is not a victim: an Halfling demon, his breed is condemned to servitude to the human race, but Maithe is “special”, he has more demon blood in his body than other halflings and as such, he is entitled to be owned only by royalty. Problem is that the king of this realm is already mated to Maithe’s brother and so what will happen to him? While Maithe loves his brother, he doesn’t really care for anyone else if not himself, and so, when the chance comes to be owned by Astle, the son of a neighborhood king, it doesn’t seem to me that Maithe struggles a lot with the idea.
As I said, the story is quite “bloody”, there is a lot of violence, even on innocent people, but not only that type of violence; the coupling between Maithe and Astle is always quite rude, and Maithe, described at time like a lamb (I suppose for his horns) and at time as an angel (probably for his feathery wings), comes out from them bruised and tattered, but also very much satisfied. Maithe has a wicked core, and he is not scared by Astle’s rude attitude. On the other hand, Astle has found a matching soul in Maithe, and he knows he hasn’t to control when he is with the other man.
This is not the story of a rescue of an innocent soul, this is more the story of two partners in crime meeting each other. Maithe is no lamb or angel, and Astle is no Prince Charming. Two really original characters; moreover I have to pay homage to the author for her fantasy world, and for not backing from making it cruel and dangerous: this is no fairy tale, and not even the main characters are safe from possible death.
I would give this book 2.5 stars if I could. The author has created an interesting world and the book is generally well written. There was too much happening in the novel for its short length. I felt the characters lacked depth and found it hard to relate to them. The sentence structure and syntax were odd in places, making it harder to read these sections. Additionally, it was distracting how the main character was referred to by so many different titles rather than his name - cherub, faux cherub, cherubim, hellion, halfling. I would, however, try another novel by this author as it seems she's a relatively new author.
