Amazing story! So in love with Travis and Corrine, and the author who opened their world up to us...

hugging

There was nothing I didn't like about Lucid.

Beautifully written. The prose was exceptional. The flow of the story was paced very well. A very smooth and smartly written story.

Lucid is the story of Travis. He is physically disfigured causing his peers to ignore and bully him because he is different. All things considered, Travis is actually rather well adjusted but still longs to belong, to be liked, and to love.

The object of his love is Corrine. She works in the local coffee shop where Travis visits all the time so he can be near her. Corrine is a nice girl and is nice to Travis, but doesn't notice him outside the shop.

It isn't until Travis starts going to a new doctor, a therapist that he starts to discover his true inner self. A gift of a talisman and a story of dreams takes him on the path of lucid dreaming which is any dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming.

Corrine appears in Travis' dream and their friendship begins, in his dream state. He doesn't understand how Corrine can be there but she is. Definitely part of the mystery that ensues.

And while their relationship blossoms, there are definite twists and turns to the story. The talisman is stolen, Travis is brutally beaten by Terry his tormentor, his relationship with his parents change, I think for the better, and along the way, Travis discovers a new confidence and self worth, an acceptance of himself. Even his physically appearance becomes non factor, one he isn't even aware of until pointed out by Corrine.

This was a lovely, sweet story. There are parts that make you cry and cheer and in the end you are just head over heals in love with Travis.

A definite must read!

Natalie Roers debut novel is nothing less than amazing and an author I will be keeping my eye on! o_O

Travis Hunter never felt like he fit in anywhere. In fact, the only thing that he can remember since he was a little boy is being judged by his disfigured looks. So he did the only thing he knew what to do best - try to ignore everyone, hoping that everyone else will ignore him too. Everything changes when his therapist gives him a talisman which she claims was a part of The Lucid group that created their own world while dreaming. He never thought to discover that his dream world would have Connie - the most beautiful girl in town that he cannot help but fall in love with.

This was such cute read! I felt bad for Travis but was also inspired by him. He didn't care what others think of him, even when he had disfigured looks. I think it was kind of sad that his parents thought exactly the same thing that everyone else thought, even though they were trying not to show it. Either way, I loved reading about the magical world that he experienced in his dreams and just wish the story was longer. It was sort of one of those endings that were "WTF! It's over already!!" but I really enjoyed reading this quick and entertaining book.

Natalie Roers’ voice is amazingly confident for a first novelist. Her journalist's eye for human detail draws you in, and makes you care about the people who populate the LUCID world. The more I got to know them, both awake and asleep in the world of lucid dreaming, the more time I wanted to spend in their world.

This was a painful read. I knew at chapter three with the addition of a Dream Girl™ that it wasn't going to go well. This was a hodge podge book with a couple interesting ideas but no backbone.

Travis was born with a disfigurement. He has no friends, is bullied at school and spends most of his time alone in his 'apartment'. He longs for Corrine, who works in the bookstore, to notice him. Corrine is popular and beautiful. Travis can't believe she would ever be interested in someone like him.
When his therapist gives him a talisman and he finds he can control his dreams. Somehow, Corrine ends up in his dreams with him.

This was a beautiful, sweet story. I loved getting to know the characters & their hopes & dreams. A story that shows us that what's inside is so much more important than the packaging!

Some people said the book is too short. I think it's the perfect length.

It is a simple, endearing story about the power of imagination. The only sad part I felt was that for disfigured people, this fantasy usually never becomes reality. But the book is wise to give hope, using the plot device of lucid dreaming. That's fine! Books are there, to offer us an escape and a way to make things work that they wouldn't otherwise in the real world.

Only two things bothered me about this book. One was the doctor's accent. It got a little annoying after a few sentences. If the author wanted to bring out an accent, it would suffice to show a few examples of what was heard, then leave the accent out for the rest of the book, explaining at the crucial point that the main character started ignoring the accent. Secondly, it bothered me a bit that, after several long periods of time in lucid dreaming, the initiator of the lucid dreamer could have the power to bring others into the fantasy world and leave the real world altogether. What about personal choice within the followers? What about staying true to the real world, no matter what the imperfections? Sometimes we have to fight within the real world, to bring about change where it matters, so that others can benefit. That's responsibility.

The imagination that flows from the real world to the fantasy world is amazing. I loved the fantasy aspect. I loved the way the characters were able to shape the surroundings and the activities to anything they wanted. Isn't that what ultimate fantasy is all about? I liked the dance scene they had. I liked it when the girl told the guy that he had always appeared his true self in the dreams and that the false images he had of himself were his perceptions, not hers. That really clicked with me.

This is a coming of age story where you are literally tested as to how you view yourself and your morals. I loved this really cute story. It was beautifully written and it was fast paced.

Travis is the main character. He has some facial disfigurations since birth. His parents try to keep everything normal. He's bullied. He has a crush on the popular girl. Travis has a good personality and he grows so well in this story. He so loves Corrine. She works in the local coffee shop where Travis visits all the time so he can be near her but he also picks up books there so he can get away with it.

Corrine isn't into the bullying of Travis, but she also is pretty clueless to him. It isn't until Travis starts speaking with his shrink that she offers him a little gift to try, and let's just say the magic flies :) His dreams takes him on a ride of lucid dreaming which is basically how you want your life to be. But beware, if anyone follows you in, they can change the dream. :) And somehow Corrine is there with him. Their friendship together is how Travis finally learns who he is and how Corrine learns to be who she really wants to be.

This was such a sweet story. There are parts that make you cry and cheer and in the end you are just head over heals in love with Travis and you even cheer on Corrine. I loved it!!

When I first began this book, I was immediantly sucked in. The first few chapters are incredible and give the book so much potential. Sadly, the rest of this story does not live up to that potiental in my opinion.

I love the story of Travis and Corrine and of her falling in love with him despite his looks and disfigurment. What I don't like, however, is how everything is rushed and takes a turn for the worse. The whole thing with Terry stealing the tailsman wasn't drawn out enough. I felt like there was no reason for him to harrass Travis and Corrine other than the fact that he is a punk and Corrine wouldn't go out with his brother, John.

Doctor Kelly's background definitely could've been drawn out much more. Honestly, as much as I love her character and accent, she just seems to appear out of nowhere and is mostly used for a place holder.

Like I said, this book had sooooo much potiental, but sadly, I wasn't all that impressed by it. Maybe I'll change my mind once I read some of Roers other works.

"Lucid" was an amazing book! Everything flowed well and the story completely drew me in. Without giving anything away, the author gave the book the most perfect ending possible!
I would definitely recommend "Lucid" to other readers. Natalie Roers touched on feelings and emotions that we have all gone through but often felt alone in.
