These stories, written in response to huge popular demand, give us classic Berry Pleydell – Yates’ finest comic character – at the top of his form. The first story sees Berry capturing a German spy at a village cricket match in 1914, and things get more bizarre from then on. A self-consciously nostalgic work harking back to more decorous days consisting of tense plotting and high farce of the best kind.
It's good to see some of Yates' titles re-released. Berry Pleydell is one of the funniest characters ever created. I'm a sucker for old-fashioned British comedy and Yates always satisfies. He combines a fast-paced Jazz Age detective story with a comedic twists that generate true belly laughs.
If you enjoy EF Benson, PG Wodehouse, and other masters of the English comic story, you might enjoy this book of short stories featuring Dornford Yate's best-known character, Berry Pleydell. These high-spirited romps may be dated, but they still entertain.
