Spiritual Counsels #5

Rate this book

One of the most powerful and practical books I have ever read on spiritual living through humbling yourself. We often read the passages in scripture on humility, and preach sermons followed by a laugh at how "once you think you have it, you don't." Sadly, we often don't discuss how to practically acquire this fundamental trait to a healthy spiritual life. Simply put, humility is acquired by accepting humiliation. St. Paisios of Mount Athos shows the fruit of his passionate life of friendship with Christ by reflecting on the many specific ways we hide our pride, and how we can learn to be people filled with peace, gentleness, and love. This is a painfully practical guide to taking up our cross, and surely one of the best.

The book comes from St. Paisios' answers to questions by Orthodox Christian women monastics. Like his counsels in volumes 1 through 4 of his Spiritual Counsels series, his responses are practical, deep, and insightful. The challenge is to take them to heart and live them. The focus is the struggle to purify the heart; the countless wonders that attended his earthly life are not listed here, as the purpose of the series is to make us consider how we fall short of God's glory, to come to grips with our sins and shortcomings and to put into practice the "medicine" St. Paisios provides for our spiritual healing.

Great book! A lot of examples and stories from real life that saint Paisios tells.
