Born in Southern China in 1893, this farmer's son would rule the world's most populous country. The young Mao Zedong grew up in a world desperate to break with the ancient rules of the Qing dynasty. Mao challenged convention early in life, and was expelled from school. He joined China's new Communist Party, and led China's historic revolution. Hailed by many as a truly liberating hero, others demonized him as a brutal monster. This biography outlines the revolutionary life of the first leader of the People's Republic of China and sets his march to power in the context of world history.

This is an overview of the life of Mao Zedong published by the good folks at National Geographic
Review
As would be expected from National Geographic, this book is colorful, easy to read and full of information. While Mao Zedong is not likely to attract a lot of children for pleasure reading, the inclusion of an index, bibliography and glossary make this book a good choice for research.
The focus is on the life and personality of Mao rather than on the political situation of China. Of course, it's impossible to discuss Mao without referring to politics. Mainly this is addressed by a timeline across the bottom which indicates important political and personal events. Most impressively, the book tries to deal with such a contravercial figure in an even handed manner. It does not mask his naked ambition. Additionally, it does indicate some of the positive aspects of his revolution.
