Cutting the Strings

Rate this book
This riveting autobiographical account takes the reader on a journey around the globe as Little strikes out on her own at an early age and discovers a world that not only embraces her but transforms her existence. Little does well in telling her story and readers will likely be impressed and moved by the way the author "cut the strings" that were holding her back. Early into the book, the reader is rooting for Little to break away from these people who showed little concern for her welfare and failed to recognize her gifts and strengths. Readers will laugh, cry and be inspired by the turn of events in this compelling example of perseverance and personal triumph.

This story will touch your heart. It depicts courage, strength, and character in spite of what life and "not optimal" parenting throws at the author. Each roadblock makes you wonder, oh, no what else can happen? One never knows what real issues are behind those who continue to give to humanity selflessly. A great read.

A book of hope and courage.

After reading Cutting the Strings, I am both impressed and inspired by the authors journey. She is able to build a fulfilling life for herself against all odds and even gives back to those in need. I appreciate the vulnerability expressed in her writing and I highly recommended this book.

Although the subject was quite interesting, the author left huge gaps in her memoirs, and it read more or less as a diary........"I did this, I went here, I went there, I found myself here and there". The book had a promising start, telling the sad story of her childhood, but the author lost me during her college experience, with her breathless account of her travels, working with the Hmong, finding herself desperately ill on several occasions....but then flying off to Mexico, where she repeats the same story......and then off to Texas, finally settling down in a second marriage, having had a son sometime during that time. She obviously made contact with her birth family again, but doesn't wrap up the story except that she "cut the strings" with her mother.
Most of the character appeared to be shallow, and they should have been "fleshed" out to make them realistic, and the "feeling" one gets from the book is one of "breathlessness", as the author ran from place to place in her life, running away from her past into a new life in which she continued to run.......Hopefully she has settled down now.
Unfortunately this book reads more or less like a travelogue or a diary, rather than as a book one would settle down with.

This is a heartwarming story about a young girl who makes her way out in to the world with all the courage, perseverance and tenacity that you would only find in the heart of a true champion. Through sheer determination, somehow she carves out a life worth living, all the while never forgetting the importance of reaching out to help those in need. This book is a testament to anyone struggling or in emotional turmoil, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This must read is all about hope and the possibilities that await all of us if we just keep forging on!
