Det er ikke lenge siden Aurora flyttet til blokk Z, så hun kjenner ingen barn der, og de hun møter blir hun litt redd for med en gang. Særlig Knut, som synes hun har så rart navn. Aurora nekter å gå ut en stund, men det viser seg at Knut er en hyggelig fyr, og etter hvert blir hun kjent med Nusse og Brit-Karen også - og mormor i huset i skogen.

About the author

Anne-Catharina Vestly, but published as Anne-Cath. Vestly is a Norwegian actress and author of children books. She debuted with "Ole Aleksander Filibom-bom-bom" in 1953. Her first works were designed to be read on the radio, making the language to a greater extent oral than in her later books. Through the Norwegian children radio program "Barnetimen for de minste" she developed a large audience for her children stories. Some of her books were adapted into movies. As an actress, the Anne-Cath. Vestly herself played the role as the grandmother in the films about "Mormor og de åtte ungene". An interesting aspect of Vestly's books are that she has created her own little town, "Tiriltoppen", where many of her characters live. Hence, earlier protagonists reoccur in later book series when their lives intertwine.

This was a gem of a book recommended to me by a good friend. Published in Norway, 1966 and translated by Eileen Amos, this first book in the series follows a young girl, Aurora, and her family as they move to a block of flats during the winter time. Aurora is nervous about living on the tenth floor of this alien building and she quickly notices how odd everyone seems to find her family. Her father is the primary carer, studying for a doctorate at home whilst her mother was off earning money by being a lawyer.
What with Aurora's hesitancy to make friends, helping to look after her baby brother, Socrates, and with all these new people probing her as to her family's odd setup, Hello Aurora could be seen as several decades ahead of its time: what a pity then that it's out of print!
The book is separated into ten chapters each of which, written in third person narrative, follow Aurora as she explores the area and helps her father with the day-to-day chores. I loved the fact that her father and mother both taught her tolerance and to not judge others too quickly and to consider, respectfully, the 'whys' behind everyone's actions. When father is at odds at the supermarket and in the laundrette, it is an elderly lady and a young boy who teach him and I thought this was well-considered too.
Aurora herself is independent, sensitive, reflective and thoughtful - I adored her. If you can get hold of a copy then do read it, it's a sweet little early chapter book.

У нас есть Аврора, ее братик Сократик, папа-домохозяйка и мама-юрист. Дружная семья, где мама зарабатывает, а папа занимается хозяйством и детьми, соседки суют нос не в свои дела, а Аврора — удивительно умная для своих лет девочка. Степень моего раздражения во время чтения этой книги достигла наивысшей точки кипения. Терпеть не могу, когда лезут не в свое дело и пытаются показать, как надо жить. А еще не терплю людей, не следящих за временем («я выбегу на полчасика», ага), и туповатых мамаш («ничего, что моя дочка болеет, иди посиди с ней, тебе же скучно»). Арарраар.


Я крайне нетерпимый и даже агрессивный в отношении личного пространства человек. Я не терплю сплетен, не обсуждаю свою/чужую личную жизнь на работе или с соседями, и даже привычное «обсуди своего мальчика с подружкой» на меня не распространяется. А у Авроры — хочешь, не хочешь, — все лезут не в свое дело с поистине гигантским ЧСВ.

Так получилось, что единственно адекватная ячейка общества — это «нестандартная» семья Авроры. Все остальные — это масса убогих мамашек-мещанок и девочек-цветочков, которые только и умеют, что играть в «правильные» дочки-матери. Про пап нет ни слова, они все время пропадают на работе.
Показательная книжка. Жаль только, что такая короткая.

A nice story which was quite a norm breaker in its time. Easy reading level and suitable for young children, although it may contain more sentimental value for those who grew up with it. Slow and cozy, it follows the daily lives of Aurora and her father in the months between moving to a new apartment building and Christmas. Nothing particularly horrifying, spectacular or otherwise special about it, other than the role reversal of a typical housewife life in the late 60ies.
