The Anxiety Gremlin loves one thing - to feed on your anxiety! But watch out, as the fuller he gets, the more anxious you get! How can you stop him? Starve him of his favourite food - your anxiety - and he'll shrink and shrivel away. Starving the Anxiety Gremlin is a unique resource to help young people understand different types of anxiety and how to manage them, including panic attacks, phobias, social anxiety, generalised anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder. Based on cognitive behavioural principles that link thoughts, feelings and behaviours, the techniques described help young people to understand why they get anxious and how they can 'starve' their anxiety gremlin in order to manage their anxiety. This engaging workbook uses fun activities and real life stories, and can be used by young people aged 10+ on their own or with a parent or practitioner. It is also an ideal anxiety management resource for those working with young people, including mental health practitioners, social workers, education sector staff and youth workers.
I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via the publisher.
Starving the Anxiety Gremlin is a book I've been wanting to read for a long time, and I really wasn't disappointed! This book is so helpful for children, teens and grown-ups alike! The book helps the user to understand their anxiety, recognise how it is fed, learn how to starve it and deal with it in a great way. This book is accessible for almost everyone I can think of and is beautifully and clearly set out. I loved how the anxiety gremlin was something that the user can use to personify their anxiety and almost separate from themselves as a person. This is one of the most useful and helpful books especially for children, that I've come across and would be super beneficial for support workers of children too.
I worked through this with my daughter who struggles with anxiety, and there were some helpful tips in here. My critique is that it seems to be all over the place for age ranges - it says it is geared toward tweens and teens, but parts seemed written for much younger children. Overall, it was worth picking through and getting some helpful hints.
Really helpful and practical. I wish I had read it as a teenager when it really would have made an impact, there are some really valuable lessons to be learnt
Helpful book for people with anxiety. It helped me to think about my thoughts and try and find another way to tackle them. I also liked the interactivity in the book, although it was near impossible to do this with a Kindle. I don't really like the cover-this book is aimed towards teenagers and the cover looks quite childish-but I really liked the stories of other people's anxiety that were dotted around the book and how the author took the time to explain everything in a clear way.
