Our culture is obsessed with lifestyle. Magazines and websites tell us what to wear, how to get fit, what to drive and how to love. Everyone wants to tell us how to live our lives. Jesus didn't leave us a lifestyle magazine, he sat down on a mountainside and began to teach. These 18 chapters examine Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and the radical alternative it presents to our modern lifestyle. Simple, memorable and profound. Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount are as relevant and as challenging today as they were 2,000 years ago.Chapters1. How to Find the Secret to Happiness2. How to Change the World around You3. How to Build a Secure FutureAuthor InformationNicky Gumbel is the pioneer of the Alpha Course. He studied law at Cambridge and theology at Oxford, practiced as a lawyer, and is now senior pastor of Holy Trinity Brompton church in London, one of England's fastest growing churches. He is the author of many international bestselling books about the Christian faith including Questions of Life, Searching Issues, A Life Worth Living, The Heart of Revival, 30 A Practical Introduction to Reading the Bible, Why Jesus?, Why Easter? and Why Christmas?.
Nicholas Glyn Paul Gumbel, known as Nicky Gumbel, is an English Anglican priest and author in the evangelical and charismatic traditions. He is known as the developer of the Alpha Course, a basic introduction to Christianity supported by churches of many Christian traditions.
OK, let me start by saying that strictly speaking I am not a Christian, but over the past 14 months or so I have been exploring the Christian faith and this book has helped me on that 'journey'.
Gumbel's take on Christianity explores the religion through relevant topics like managing money, building a better future and 'how to stop worrying and start living' (very helpful in my case as I am a stresshead).
Gumbel explains the way that Christians are meant to live and interact within society in a way that is understandable and engaging, and 'The Jesus Lifestyle' served as a useful accompaniment to the Alpha course (and later Beta).
I went on the Alpha course, and what I experienced really opened my eyes to life. There are videos in which Nicky Gumbel preaches about Gods love for us and how He wants to be in our lives and to have a deep relationship with us. Nicky brought me closer to God on that Alpha course, and he still inspires me today, that's why I've read, and would recommend his books including this one! Life isn't perfect, but at least we can be put on the right track again by reading Nicky's wise words. Life can be painful - but so is God!!
