If you thought Evangelion's characters have a tough time in the anime, wait until you see what happens when some of Japan's most unhinged manga artists get their ink-stained hands on them! Neon Genesis Evangelion: Comic Tribute is an officially authorized one-shot anthology of parody stories assaulting Evangelion from all directions.
Inside, Mine Yoshizaki (Sgt. Frog) leads a band of manga pranksters including Hideki Ohwada (The Legend of Koizumi), Yun Kouga (Loveless), Nawoki Karasawa (Sake Jock, Super Cruel and Terrible Tales of Manga-ka), Yoko Sanri (B Gata H Kei: Yamada's First Time), ComiPo! mastermind Keiichi Tanaka, Rui Takato (Cynthia the Mission), Astroguy II (Queen's Blade Struggle), Kotaro Yamada (The Sacred Blacksmith), Sessyu Takemura (Domin-8 Me!), Jun Abe (Portus) and Tony Takezaki (Space Pinchy. A.D. Police). Also contains contributions from normal people, like Rikdo Koshi (Excel Saga).
Finished this one a couple hours ago, and I am glad I did. The letters seemed really blurry on my eReader, and it made quite a bit of it pretty hard to read. But, I am still thankful for the chance to have gotten it from NetGalley to read and review. -------------------- This is a collection of doujin-style stories about the main Evangelion characters. It says "Comic Tribute", but don't let the word "comic" fool you, as it is still a manga anthology, and the stories do read R-to-L not L-to-R. The stories vary from slightly serious ones that play good tribute to the original series to ecchi ones that make Shinji out as a huge pervert to ones that are just silly fluff pieces. There's even one at the end that features Sgt. Frog! I enjoyed this collection, probably more than I should have, and would happily read any others that they release in the future.
If you like Eva, this is a pretty silly collection of short comics about it. It had me at Evan-dog-lion where the cast is turned to puppies during Shinji's first sortie (poor rei and her neck brace,) but there's more that's fun about it. Another funny spot was joking about Shinji's strategically covered nudity in one episode, and a certain frog makes a cameo. Your enjoyment is purely going to be based on your tolerance for silliness, so don't go in expecting a heartfelt tribute to the series. But if you like goofy takes on popular series, you might find it fun. I did.
I never thought I'd be reviewing a doujinshi collection but that is exactly what Dark Horse Comics has presented us: a collection of doujinshi shorts centered around Neon Genesis Evangelion, written and illustrated by a wide variety of established manga-ka (although most of them are better known in Japan than in the United States). Dark Horse seems to be the place to go for Evangelion spin-off manga since Viz has the actual manga firmly in its grasp for eternity. Honestly, as far as short collections go, it's not the worst but it certainly won't appeal to everyone, especially casual fans who aren't tuned in to every reference and in-show nuance of Evangelion's ever-growing canon.
Eva is so straightfacedly goofy about so many things, teaming up a bunch of comedy mangaka to parody the heck out of it seems like a genius idea. seems like.
the editors seem to be aware of how over-merchandised the series is, but seems to not be fully aware of the irony of making jokes about this. Also 4 out of 5 of these just devolve into boob jokes. once is funny, but when every other punchline is 'tee hee boobies'... come on!
This was a waste of my time and money. An incoherent collection of sometimes satirical takes on Neon Genesis Evangelion... Because of course, what NGE needed was more fanservice. If for some reason you needed more NGE boobs in your life, maybe this book would appeal to you. If there is a finite amount of panty flash jokes before you throw a book across the room ... avoid this book.
