Mina

His smiles are like sunshine, but bright light gives me a migraine attack. He wants us to be each other's date at some family functions, but I don't date men. He believes we can work together to secure a new important client, but I'm only doing it so I can finally prove to everyone just how capable I am. So what if we have fun together? We're work rivals, complete opposites and the last thing I need being chronically ill and recently dumped is a relationship with the happiest boy in the office. And yet, for some reason I find myself telling Charlie all about my illness and about my ex and about how much I love Strictly Come Dancing and he doesn't run away. In fact, he pulls me into a cloakroom, gets down on his knees, and shows me just what that sunshine-smiling mouth can do...

Charlie

Everyone thinks I'm gay, apart from Mina. Everyone assumes I don't have a care in the world, but Mina discovers that's not quite accurate. And everyone thinks I love my job and my life, apart from Mina after I inadvertently blurt out the truth on one of our fake dates. Mina may be the complete opposite of me, and currently my biggest rival at work, but she gets it, or at least, she doesn't think I'm a lost cause. Furthermore, she helps put my mother in her place, which I have been wanting to do for thirty years, and it's a revelation when she makes me realise just how bisexual I am after only being with men for ten years. What if Mina could be more than a fake date and my work rival? What if Mina is completely different from me, but also completely perfect for me? What if I can convince her to give us a go, to let love rule?

Let Love Rule is a bi4bi spicy fake-dating romance with a black cat FMC, a golden retriever MMC, work rivals to lovers and naughty shenanigans in far too many cloakrooms. There is own voices chronic illness rep and a diverse cast of characters. Please check introduction for content warnings.

This was such a cute and so spicy read! So many tropes that I like, but I’m always a sucker for fake dating.

Charlie and Mina are rivals in the workplace that are tasked with working to together on a team for a potentially new client. While working together they discover they are both Bi and both newly single, and both have family events that really need a plus one. Fake dating ensues.

Mina is a grumpy Gus and Charlie is a super happy friendly puppy at all times. Of course you realize quick that there’s always underlying issues and masks that people wear. It was cute and sometimes frustrating watching these two come together, but the HEA was worth it.

The spice, my goodness. Mina is a very take charge, Femdom and Charlie is A-ok with that.

And pegging. If that sways you any 😂

I love how this is one of the queerest things I've ever written and yet it's an MF pairing... Also to quote the Author's Note at the back of the book, I set out to write Let Love Rule as a fun, feelgood, spicy AF bisexual romp, but as Mina's character and chronic illness revealed more of themselves to me, the book took a slightly different route. And I couldn't be more pleased that it did. There are still lots of laughs and a ridiculous amount of spice, but there's also a heartfelt message about chronic illness and the people who experience it. Whether you read it for that representation, or for the naughty shenanigans in cloakrooms (yes, plural), ballroom dancing or hands-free cake-eating, I hope you enjoy Charlie and Mina's story.

I received a copy from the author and I’m leaving an honest review.

I have some mixed feelings about this book and I don’t know how to organize my thoughts properly for this review, so I apologize in advance. The story is really interesting and the characters are also very compelling, but there were some moments that made the reading experience less exciting than I originally hoped. I'm currently rating it 3.75 starts (rounded up to 4).

While 'racism' is listed in the content warnings at the start of the books, I wasn’t expecting the story to straight up start with micro-aggressions at work. They are challenged and discussed, but it was a little surprising to find this immediately in the first few pages.
Right after that, there’s a lot of biphobic stuff said by side characters and that wasn’t easy to read at all (especially as someone who’s pan), but they're obviously argued about by the two bisexual main characters (rightfully so). Despite the personal impact those comments made on me, it was actually really nice to see the discussion of bi-erasure, which is something that's unfortunately very 'popular' among straight people and queer people alike.

One thing I really enjoyed is the chronic illness rep. I liked Mina's explanation of her pain and how people don't take her migraines seriously enough, as well as how she hides it away to not be a burden to her loved ones. It hit close to home in more ways than one.

Charlie's golden retriever energy was adorable (listen... that's literally my type) and he fit so well with Mina's energy. They truly balanced each other and shared some pretty cute moments (the first [fake] dates were amazing).

The first intimate scenes between Mina and Charlie were really good (we definitely need more pegging in romance novels.... and in general), but as it went on, Mina’s use of sex to deviate any serious conversation got more and more annoying and (for me) a little uncomfortable. It felt like sex was the only thing they actually did together and while there were some emotions involved, the amount of sex kind of overshadowed the actual development of said feelings in my opinion.

It also felt a bit rushed, and maybe even out of character, how Mina immediately changed her mind about wanting something with Charlie when he shows up to take care of her. I expected her to suffer thought it and then rethink about the moment later and make the decision of being with him in another moment, not to give in as soon as he showed up.

Content warnings: racism, micro-aggressions in a working environment, prejudice, biphobia, homophobia, arophobia, transphobia, mention of vomiting and other migraine-related symptoms, strained parent-child relationship, brief mention of absent parent, misogyny.

Representation: bisexual british-indian female mc with chronic illness (migraine related), bisexual white male mc.

More 2,5/5

I don't consider myself a prude, but there were too much sex scenes for me on this book, or not enough story. The plot is : they were coworkers, they've been put on a project together and competing against each other (even there's no development here), they got on fake dating just because, they are horny af, and they fall in love. One week top. I would have loved more about that work project, or the pets, or even the friends, families, exes.

What I liked, is there were a lot about consent, it was amazing, yet a bit perfectible. Also, I reckon it's a good job with diversity cast and representation.

It's not a bad book (the reviews are good), I didn't hate it, but it's not my cup of tea.

🌶 Pegging

I'm convinced at this point Frances can do no wrong.

Let Love Rule is a sweet, funny, and spicy love story with a lot of heat and a lot of heart.

Our MCs couldn't be more different if they tried, a golden retriever hero and a black cat heroine. Everything about them shouldn't work. But yet it does, so wonderfully.

Mina, our heroine, suffers from migraine disease and really goes through it over the course of the book. As someone with chronic migraine, cluster, and tension, I feel that the representation here truly encapsulated the sheer despair of suffering with this illness. Affecting her relationships, Mina doesn't like to show vulnerability, so she keeps her illness mostly to herself. But as the story unfolds, we see her guard coming down and allowing Charlie in and help support her.

Charlie is just a little ray of sunshine and the perfect walking juxtaposition to Mina. He even OWNS a golden retriever.

I love that the concept of queereness in an M/F relationship was dissected with the parents of the MMC, as it's a very real issue that bisexual and queer people face on a regular basis If you're a woman in a relationship with a man (or a man in a relationship with a woman), you're suddenly no longer bisexual. I love that both characters were so comfortable in their queerness and that Mina had the courage to speak up for Charlie when it came to his mum.

Both characters complimented one another perfectly, and I just loved their story. And the intimate scenes in the book were... 👀 😘👌

Overall, this was a wonderful read from a wonderful human ❤️

I enjoyed this story, this was my first introduction to bi characters and I loved how the author portrayed it. I loved the fake dating aspect and the found family. I did find this a bit wordy, a lot of run on sentences. But it didn't take away from the story, which worked at a pretty steady pace. 😉 definitely go check out this story

DNF. It pains me to DNF this, this book had all the tropes I’ve come to love over my years as a reader. This was just too political. I felt as if every chapter was showcasing one of the MCs going through a key political issue. Bi-erasure. Prejudice. Racism. Misogyny. Negative LGBTQ+ views. The list seems to go on. NOW. I know there’s often the argument that reading is political— yes. It very much so can be. Im just the reader that prefers to escape our current reality into a reality where I’m not reading about the same painful things we witness/experience as a community each day. As a bi woman myself, I appreciate what the author tried to convey with this book.. but I feel it was very much a “everything but the kitchen sink” type of political agenda disguised as an office romance. Due to this, I couldn’t get a grasp on anything happening to— or about the characters. They seemed to take a back seat to everything the author had to show politically, all within the first few chapters. I love when an author can give a great and engaging story while also showing characters facing struggles and creating an environment where diverse readers can feel seen and represented across multiple political downfalls. I just feel that this book didn’t have that balance for me. It may be a hit for someone else who prefers a more straightforward political push in their romance reads.

Spicy, Cute, Charming.

I must say when I spotted this book cover I was very intrigued it really drew me in, especially the tattoos. I love a character with tattoos. Mina definitely has a few tattoos in this story.

There is certainly a diverse array of characters in this book. Both main characters are bi and there is also chronic illness rep. No spoilers as all of this is in the blurb. I really enjoyed Mina and Charlie’s learning to get to know each other.

It was a 4 star read for me. I would definitely read more books by this author. I really like that they include a list of trigger warnings at the start of the book. I think it should be included in all books. Thank you to Booksirens and the author for a gifted copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

It was okay and nice, but I had big issues with the FMC and how unlikable Mina was throughout the book. It didn't feel like she had a lot of growth in the book and her "grumpiness" (it was too caricature for me) bothered me a lot.

⭐️: 5/5

📖 Summary: Let Love Rule by Frances M. Thompson is a dual POV, spicy🌶️ romance that features bisexual female AND male main characters. Mina and Charlie work together at an ad agency and are paired up to create a last minute pitch for a potential client, even though they don’t normally work on the same team. Mina is dark, broody, and suffers chronic migraine attacks, whereas Charlie is all sunshine☀️, smiles, and positivity. Both are going through recent breakups and decide that being each other’s dates to upcoming social events will help each other’s personal lives and give them and opportunity to work on their pitch. Can Mina and Charlie deal with their growing attraction and prepare a successful presentation, all while competing for lead on their project?🤔

💭Thoughts: I adored this book. The representation was incredible -🌈two bi main characters (marking my first read with a bisexual male character), a British Indian main character, and a main character with a chronic illness. There was so much to appreciate in this story. Mina and Charlie are so different from each other, but their chemistry still feels natural. The way their relationship progressed was somewhat realistic, starting distanced and platonic but progressing as they get to know each other.

This book also addresses stigmas in the workplace (racism, sexism, etc) and in the LGTBQ+ community (bi erasure). On top of that, Mina’s chronic illness is classily incorporated without becoming her whole personality.

Some themes of this book include the grumpy/sunshine trope, coworkers-to-lovers, opposites attract, fake dating, plus it’s just so, SO cute 🥰

Bonus points: The chapters are titled!!

THIS WAS SO GOOD!

Reverse grumpy sunshine with a giant helping of golden retriever MMC.

Both characters are bi, but have only been with same-sex partners for many years. FMC deals with a chronic illness which added so much depth to what otherwise could have been just a spice-filled fluffy read.

And I'm sorry but THE SPICE!! Chefs kiss. Very evenly distributed, and started around the 25% mark. Great descriptions. Non-repetitive. So good. (And to think, if only I hadn't left this on my TBR for so long, my femdom awakening could have been this book instead of that book about the sentient door.)

Double bonus points for a sex scene at the end of the book AND in the bonus chapters.

I love Charlie and Mina so much. The characters were great and showed genuine development. The fake-dating situation started out pretty standard, but otherwise the plot was super engaging. I definitely predicted from a mile away, but that didn't take anything away for me. If anything, it had my nerves gearing up for what I knew was about to happen.

I am not a member of the LGBTQ+ community, nor do I deal with a chronic illness, but from an outside perspective, this book seemed to have great representation of both.

Overall, absolutely loved it. Hate myself for waiting 9 months to read it. Honestly, will probably re-visit. If not for a full re-read, at least for a sneak back at that pegging scene (bc ma’AM 😭🥵).

Premise: Charlie (MMC) and Mina (FMC) are work colleagues who don't particularly get along, because they're very different. They make a pact to be each others’ plus-ones to some family events because they've both recently broken up from long term relationships and don't want drama with their family. It's a fairly played out plot, but didn't go to heavy handed with the “fake dating” stuff. The book is set in the UK.

Characters and relationship: I really liked the characters, they felt real: flawed but good people trying to make the best of it. Their relationship felt very believable: they had shared interests and there were lots of scenes of them laughing and having fun together; they both lifted each other up and supported each other and they communicated like adults. I also really liked the sex scenes, which were femdom and included toys, pegging, semi-public sex.

Representation: both MCs are bisexual but have mostly been in same-sex relationships - I liked how Charlie needed a bit of coaching on how to please Mina. Mina is South Asian from a Hindu family, Charlie is white. Mina suffers from a chronic illness: migraine attacks, and there were some cute caretaking scenes once she let him in.

Overall the book was well written and enjoyable and I'll be trying some more by this author.

First of all- thank you for the ARC!

Mina is grumpy, moody, has a migraine disorder, recent break up and trying her hardest to show her employer how great she is. Personally- I didn’t love her. That does not mean I didn’t like the book. I feel like if an author can truly make me feel one way or another about a character they did a really great job at writing said character. So kudos to Frankie for that!

I DID love that these two main characters were so real. They had honest convos about their pasts, sexuality and current struggles and the conversations were not easily had. Mina was trying real hard to keep him at a distance but he made her feel so comfortable it just felt natural to let him in. I loved that.

My heart hurt for him when she declared their fake relationship was just that-fake. The amount of hope he held onto felt so real world and I feel like so many people can relate to how he felt!

Anyways I could go on and on about this book all day. As a straight, whitefemale I truly appreciated the insight that it brought for POC, working women, sexuality etc. It’s very clear the author puts her heart and soul into the books she writes and I will continue to recommend them to my friends!

I personally didnt like this book as much as I thought I would.

The entire Falling-in-love part happens in a single week which is way too short tbh. Two Fake dates and they convinced themselves to give up their Jobs to follow their dream Jobs and they live together long even after the book ended? Don't get me wrong, I love a couple that encourages each other to follow their dreams and -atleast for Mina this was done a logical way - but giving up your job on a whim with no back-up plan because one person you only started to really like and pay attention to a week ago is excessive.

And the romance storyline felt not only rushed because of the fast pacing, but it was also less romantic because it really felt like it was more supported by bedroom-encounters than it was by actual getting-to-know-eachother.

Another part that bugs me was how fast they got over their exes. Both, Mina and Charlie, admitted to having been broken up less than a month (if I remember correctly) and while both have been unhappy in their previous long-term relationships, they just got over it. Just like that. And then they just jump into a new relationship with each other after this one week they actually spend together???

I well and truly enjoyed Mina and Charlie‘s story. The tropes (fake-dating, workplace rivals to lovers, grumpy/sunshine) worked well together and with the overall plot. Mina and Charlie are two lovable MCs and since it’s dual POV, there is a lot of insight into both characters. This book had me laughing, swooning, blushing and tearing up a little bit. It is fun, spicy, warm-hearted and just a good time. It also tackled assumptions about people‘s sexuality really well and with the reversal of the grumpy/sunshine (she is grumpy, he is sunshine) trope it’s also a not so subtle commentary on typical gender roles. Both of the MCs are unapologetically bisexual and the topic of biphobia is also discussed. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this book because I enjoyed the writing, the plot, the characters and the spice. It worked really well for me, I only wish there had been more at the end.

There is also chronic illness representation (migraine disease) in this book and while I can’t speak to its quality, it was handled with a lot of compassion and is based on the authors own experiences with chronic illnesses and their episodes.

Firstly a big thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this to review.
I want to start by saying this isn’t your usual romance book. But that is exactly why I loved it. Mina is a fierce FMC who is battling a chronic illness, but refuses to let it take over her life. Charlie is the sweetest MMC I have ever known, and the fact that he has a golden retriever is hilarious because that’s exactly what he is! There is so much to love about these two, but I also love how they both have their flaws and aren’t perfect!
This book is written so well and I genuinely did not want to put it down.
The only thing I didn’t love about this book was a few too many references about bisexuality assumptions and gender assumptions. I don’t personally think this was needed because the book also gives you this naturally without directly pointing it out. But that’s just personal preference! I 100% recommend giving this one a go and it will be on Kindle Unlimited! Although…have you seen the cover?? Definitely worth getting the paperback just for this 😍

In Let Love Rule, Frances M. Thompson gives readers a luminous story of unexpected love between two people who should not work in a relationship, even as friends. For years Mina and Charlie have worked in the same ad agency. Charlie is all sunshine and twinkles, while Mina, due to a chronic and unpredictable illness and her personality, holds herself aloof from her co-workers. When the pair is tasked with developing a new important campaign they are thrust together and find that they have chemistry and the ability to fill in the open spaces in each other’s lives. Ms. Thompson uses some common tropes to tell her amazing story; Charlie and Mina are certainly opposites, and they concoct a plan to fake date for two family events. Both are newly single and were previously in same sex relationships. Will anyone believe that they have a real connection? I loved how the story is told from both POVs and Charlie and Mina proved to be so appealing as a couple; I found their story to be emotionally gratifying on all levels.

Charlie is too good for all of us. Mina is one fortunate chick. This was my first bi/bi romance and it was a delight. I love a work rivals-to-lovers AND a fake dating AND a grumpy/subshine trope mashup. Top tier for me. The banter was so fun and the, um, cloakroom scenes were everything.

The only reason I’m giving it less than five starts, is that it was a bit heavy handed with the messaging. Yes, I’m a firm believer in consent and acceptance, and stand in staunch opposition to bi erasure and chronic illness shaming… but golly. It was a tad incessant. I was finding myself wishing for more of Charlie and Mina’s actual personalities and connections beyond their sexual classifications or health statuses.

This book was such a surprise! I haven’t read a book where the FMC is the grump and the MMC is the sunshine, and it was super refreshing and validating that the FMC can show her emotion and personality, even if it’s not rainbows and butterflies. I found that, even with a fake dating trope intertwined in the story, it was incredibly original how the characters found each other and how their relationship - or fake relationship - progressed. Both characters were incredibly intricate, had a plethora of depth, and surprised me in many ways. I loved reading this book and there was never a dull moment!

Okay, I was seriously giggling and kicking my feet reading this one! Charlie was literally sunshine personified (he was such a cutie in a few scenes, not gonna lie), and my girl Mina being deadpan, kind of cold, and rocking a massive RBF about nearly everything in her life was just absolutely perfect.
I think the fact that they were such polar opposites is what really made this book for me. I genuinely couldn’t think of a more perfect pairing than these two. I wasn’t expecting their dynamic to work, but literally every single chapter proved me wrong. The way they just got each other? Unmatched.

I LOVE a queer m/f romance, and this interracial black cat/golden retriever workplace rivals to lovers with chronic pain rep was great. And none of those things felt shoehorned into the narrative. I love the dynamic between Mina and Charlie, and how queer their sex scenes are. They also both have depth and satisfying character arcs and I was invested in their relationship from the very beginning.

So much about this book was gorgeously done, and the only reason I didn't go five stars was because the third act conflict/resolution could have used a little more structure. But I loved this and I'm so glad that I finally read it.

Another sublime book from Frances M Thompson. Mina and Charlie are such fleshed our and loveable characters despite their flaws, but Mina stole the show for me. Her acerbic tongue was a delight and she called a spade a bloody shovel!

The scene with the new purple thing out of the packaging… phwoar!

I’m planning on taking a leaf out of Mina’s book though and determining that everyone I meet is bi or pan unless proven otherwise.

So yes, this book was amazing and in my top reads of the year so far.

Thanks so much to the author for the early copy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Grumpy/sunshine and fake-dating tropes.

Mina and Charlie are both wonderfully written. They seem like opposites but instead are the perfect balance of the other.

I loved that both MC’s were bi and delt with bi-phobia. Mina’s angst mixed with Charlie’s golden retriever tendencies made for some funny and spicy scenes.

This book covers a lot of issues that I haven’t read about in other books and it was awesome to see them represented.
