Sanjeev Sehgal, a small time businessman, is a believer in the magical powers of gemstones. He has recently acquired seven rings studded with different stones- one to be worn on each day of the week. The loss of one such ring sets off the alarm bells ringing, as he fears that someone has deliberately stolen the ring to frame him, prompting him to get in touch with Sunil Chakravarty- chief reporter at Blast and private investigator by hobby.

In the meanwhile Sonal Sikka, secretary to Ramakant- Sunil's best friend and owner of the popular Youth Club- requests Sunil to intercede on behalf of her brother Vishal, who has been accused of fraud by his employer. His decision to intercede on behalf of Vishal spectacularly misfires when the employer gets murdered and none other than Sanjeev Sehgal gets framed for the murder.

The situation gets murkier when Vishal too gets murdered. Sunil's attempts at trying to make sense of the situation only land him deeper and deeper in trouble with the redoubtable, incorruptible Inspector Prabhudayal, who heads the homicide department of Rajnagar police.

Can Sunil extricate himself from the mess that he finds himself in? Can he pierce the tangled web to unravel the truth? These and many other questions are answered in a brilliant, edge of the seat climax.

This was the first Pathak Novel (even Hindi novel) I ever read. Even for a beginner like me, this book made for easy reading. The language is simple enough to be understood even by a person with limited knowledge of the language.

As one would expect from a Sunil series novel, there are the usual suspects: the stern and principled Inspector Prabhudayal, Sunil's best friend Ramakant Malhotra- owner of Youth Club- who is ever willing to put his men and resources at the disposal of his best friend, the fearless Johri who is unafraid to take up tricky assignments. Above all is the chivalrous, imperturbable and resourceful Sunil Chakravarty, who finds a solution to every problem in his inimitable style.

While not exactly Pathak's best, this novel is undoubtedly a brilliant mystery-thriller with twists aplenty to keep you at the edge of the seat.
