A moving novel, told in diary form, captures the mores of mid-west America during the WWII era. You'll find fascinating insights into a Jewish teen's psychology as she struggles to understand her awakening sexuality, betrayal, and anti-Semitism in her hometown. The protagonist, Janet, begins to grow up as she learns of the horrors taking place in Europe.
The book had some good pieces to it but for the most part it was pretty awful. Some good pieces would be Janet standing up for herself and punching a guy, or getting rid of Karl. Some bad parts would be a white author having the n word in their book, the constant hinting at Janet's eating disorder and almost promoting it.
Wonderful insights into life during World War II in a small town in Wisconsin, the only Jewish family, and sheltered until she spends the summer in Milwaukee and learns about her heritage and her family secrets.
