Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Luffy (in background): “Zoro, I’m telling you it’s OK…”
Sanji (smirk): “Hey, mosshead*. You’re worried about me?”
Zoro (annoyed to be called out): “Like I would worry about you!”
Sanji: “But after hearing Robin’s story, even if my captain ordered me to – I won’t hold back!”
(*Actually “marimo”, a fluffy ball of green algae that resembles Zoro’s head - considered a national treasure in Japan. Seriously, how anyone thinks these two actually hate each other…)

The Straw Hats (minus two members) find Robin standing over mayor and master shipwright Iceberg, surrounded by members of the secret government agency CP9. Considering that the government has been hunting Robin for 20 years, this naturally does not do anything to help their confusion about why she has apparently become an assassin (again)! But is all as it appears? Luffy doesn’t think so, but he is troubled enough by the events so far that he isn’t fighting at his full potential. Sanji, though, never seriously doubted Robin, and has taken off separately to pursue his own scheme to save her.

Sanji: (kicks anonymous-man-in-black Agent 1 off train)
Agent 2: “Who are you?”
Agent 3: “I saw that kick! He’s not just a civilian! He must be a person of interest!”
Sanji (lighting cigarette): “If you say that to my face, I might just blush.”

We also get a closer look at Franky, who up ‘til now has only been an antagonist to the Straw Hats. We get to see the connections between this shipbreaker/gang leader, the seemingly-respectable Iceberg, and the master shipwright fishman named Tom who built both the sea train that features so heavily in this arc AND the ship of the former king of the pirates. Franky and Iceberg have become targets of the government just as much as Robin, because all three potentially hold clues to how to build a super-weapon. We also begin to understand Franky’s style as a leader. Though he has more of a top-down approach than Luffy, his gang is truly the Franky family just as much as the Straw Hat crew is a family. Being older and more experienced (specifically regarding ships), he’s the one who’s finally able to get Usopp to admit the dire state of the Going Merry. And, having seen his mentor disappeared by the government in the same manner as Robin (not to mention being arrested by CP9 himself) he’s pretty quick to side with the Straw Hats to get her back!

There’s a lot here on the themes of the responsibility and pride of creation, represented by Iceberg and Tom, respectively.
Iceberg: “ “When you bring a weapon into this world, you have to take responsibility!! It doesn’t matter if you’re the one who pulls the trigger, they still have the power to hurt someone! And that someone could be a person you love!”
Tom: “’Not my ships’?...That’s something you must never say! There’s nothing good, and nothing bad in building a ship, no matter what kind of ship it is…But…You, at least, have to love them! The one who created them must not deny them!”
(Very ‘Frankenstein’, that last point!)

There’s also a pretty clear rejection of the idea that a person’s existence can be a crime – which queer readers in particular tend to get a bit misty-eyed over, for obvious reasons!
We also get a pretty funny scene that I think strongly hints that Nami, Luffy, and Zoro all kinda have a mutual understanding that none of them is interested in the opposite gender (or, at minimum, no interest that way in each other!)

The encounters with CP9 give us our first good look at seemingly-magical abilities that have nothing to do with devil fruits. Not the VERY first look: Shanks used a not-devil-fruit ability when saving Little Luffy from a sea-serpent…but that wasn’t obvious at the time! The knowledge that this is possible will play an important role as the Straw Hats further develop their own fighting techniques.

(*I don’t think a story this long and rich can be “spoiled”, so if you want more details and analysis please read on – I’m just putting the rest in “spoilers” to save space, bc I had a lot to say about this one!*)


Sanji really shines here! While he does have two “dumb, horny simp” moments (briefly imagining that maybe Robin set things up so he’d HAVE to rescue her, and starting to write a rambling love letter to Nami before remembering that he has ACTUAL INTEL to convey) he snaps out of them quite quickly to get back to the business of figuring out what’s happening with their mysterious crewmate! His intuition leads him to the sea train station, where he spots Robin surrounded by marines and government agents…with Franky and Usopp getting dragged in by CP9 shortly thereafter.
While the others are running around the rapidly-flooding streets of the city, trying to find Luffy and Zoro (who got flung out over the rooftops by CP9), Sanji boards the sea train by himself. Watching him think and fight his way through is a delight, from his first dramatic entry into the train, to teaming up with Usopp and Franky to trick 50 agents into the last cars (which can then just be released), to the encounter with an agent who uses noodles as a weapon – causing Sanji to counter with some impressive chef-knife-work.


I mentioned earlier how I think Sanji had a gut feeling that someone was using Robin’s secrets or childhood trauma to manipulate her (because he has his own that can be used that way, as we’ll see in Whole Cake Island). Well, whether I’m right about that intuition or not, here we first see Robin telling Iceberg:
“In town, CP9 presented me with two conditions. The first was to pin the assassination on the Straw Hat pirates. The second was to turn myself over to the government…CP9 has been granted permission to activate a Buster Call against the Straw Hat pirates…I’ve found companions who believe in me. In ME! The life I once threw away, the heart I lost, the dreams I thought were dead – they bring these back to me, every time…Myself excepted, I want the six remaining Straw Hat pirates to sail from this island in safety.”
Then, on the train, after Robin resists being rescued, Bluenoe tells Sanji that he has absolute confidence that Robin will stick to their deal because she is the last survivor of the island of Ohara, which was burned to the ground in just such an attack: “For her the buster call is a nightmare she can never fully erase…and now that it threatens her companions, she has no will to oppose us.” Sanji, voice shaking (as suggested by wobbly writing) replies: “And you knew that all along?...IS THERE NO LIMIT TO YOUR DEPRAVITY?!!”

Franky is great here as well, having really important interactions with the two Straw-Hats-in-Crisis. First, he makes Usopp really look at the damage to the Merry’s hull, which forces the sniper to admit that he knows. Because, back in Skypeia, when the ship got mysteriously patched up overnight, he thought he saw a ghostly figure with a hammer and heard her say that she’d try to carry them a little longer. Franky tells him that what he heard (and saw) was probably a Klabautermann, a ship’s spirit (from Baltic/North Sea sailor mythology, BTW). When Usopp says he’s going to try and sail the Merry home, he says:
“Don’t you get it? This is hard on the ship too!! Your Going Merry liked you people enough to appear in human form, right? Think about how you’d feel if your stubbornness caused it to sink in the middle of the ocean, with all of you on board! Do you really want to put this ship you love in that kind of position?! I mean, c’mon, bro!!”
Then, after getting recaptured while trying to help Sanji rescue Robin, and having heard CP9 say things like ”NOW, of course, she’s an actual criminal. But in the beginning she was just a little girl with a terrible power. For as long as she can remember, her very existence has been a crime. The only way she can make people happy is by disappearing,” he tells her:
“You’re not the one who’ll be hurting [your friends], right? The government people call your existence a crime, but…EXISTING IS NOT A CRIME!!”

As for Usopp, he gets to witness that Sanji in no way considers himself an “ex-friend” (as Usopp had described him) when he’s immediately ready to beat up Franky for hurting “our Long Nose” earlier. They sort that out, but then Usopp finds himself with a dilemma: He wants to help rescue Robin, but he’s too ashamed to show his face to the rest of the crew. This leads to him putting on a mask that he’d acquired in Water 7 and presenting himself as a new person – the hero Sniper-King (or “Sogeking” in the anime) from sniper island. He even makes up his own little anime theme song. This fools exactly nobody except for Luffy and Chopper…but the others go along with it, because it’s what Usopp seems to need right now!


Oh, and Zoro’s on his cool-guy shit too, of course, slicing train cars in half and whatnot so that their prototype sea train isn’t impeded in chasing the official one:


Also, not important to the plot, but in the Q&A of volume 37 a reader asked why Luffy had accessories in Skypeia but not before or after.
Oda: “Luffy…borrowed a wrist-band from Usopp, and then Sanji…put a bracelet on him. Fundamentally speaking, Luffy, Zoro, and Chopper are all incapable of dressing snappily. The only times they manage it are when Nami, Usopp, Sanji, or Robin are around to help.”
This just brought me so much joy, because it not only confirms my guess that Sanji and Zoro’s coordinated Skypeia goggles came about through wardrobe consultation, it suggests Sanji basically just gave Zoro a (subtle) makeover! (Sanji also somehow convinced Zoro to use his precious swords to help him heat stones to cook campfire stew in that arc). And then of course in THIS arc we get the exchange at the top, with Sanji teasing Zoro about how the swordsman is clearly freaking out a bit about him not waiting for backup, even though - as Luffy points out - Zoro would be just as reckless!

God, if anyone wonders why Zoro/Sanji is my one and only ‘One Piece’ ship…it’s the silly bickering PLUS the nicknames (“marimo”, “curly”, etc.) PLUS the seamless fight coordination PLUS adorable shit like this. I’m not holding my breath that Oda is someday going to make this ship canon, given that he doesn’t even like writing straight romance. But are some interesting hints that it could be possible.
Sanji needs a deep dive all his own, because he is just a huge bag of issues when it comes to matters of gender roles, gender expression, and sexuality…that actually do get VERY slowly explored in canon. Anyway, I read him as “deeply closeted bisexual”, but there are other options. Zoro, on the other hand, is simpler…and I think it makes a lot of sense to just read him as gay. For one thing, he shows absolutely zero interest in women’s bodies, and Oda has pretty much confirmed that to be the case. So, is he interested in men? Well, the left-side earrings might be meant as a cue. It’s not an obvious one, given that he is a pirate, but for male ‘One Piece’ pirates piercings are actually quite rare. And Oda clearly knows what that placement means given that his answer to a question about why the sea cat had a left-side earring was “obvious humorously awkward deflection” just like when he was asked where Nami was keeping the mini transponder snail (when the correct answer is clearly “down her cleavage”). Zoro also has that style of banter even in serious fights that kinda sounds like flirting at times, and when it comes to “play fighting”, he sure likes riling up Sanji with the verbal equivalent of pulling his pigtails. Also, in one of the more recent chapters he literally claimed to have come back from the dead to keep a promise to Sanji…more on that much later, though!
But even if you don’t read them that way, they ARE clearly meant to be seen as a complementary pair, the “wings of the pirate king”, as this video explains really well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdZ96... (Note: serious analysis starts at 7 min; there is a lot of silliness first). Besides their generally shared values – despite divergent personalities – and overall fun chemistry, there are more subtle things connecting the pair. For instance, the “san” in Sanji’s name means “three” (because, in fairytale-appropriate manner, he’s the disinherited third son of his family), matching Zoro’s iconic three swords and three earrings!

Anyway, my theory about there being quite a few queer Straw Hats brings us to a scene I just HAVE to talk about. This starts with showing Nami in a cute new outfit – jeans jacket, crop top, mini-skirt – declaring “Okay! All ready for battle!” before asking their new male allies "What are you doing?”. Pauli, the shipwright foreman, is all red in the face and berates her for changing in front of them, calling her “shameless” and predicting the fall of civilization. The other shipwrights, on the other hand, say weakly: “We’re OK with shameless” . Nami will flirt with men to get a free drink or so that they’re distracted enough that she can pick their pocket or kick them in the balls…but never seems actually interested in them. However, while she says, with some irritation, “Where else are we supposed to change? There’s only one train car” …she probably wouldn’t have made the same decision if Sanji or Usopp were present. They are crewmates (AKA “coworkers + flatmates”) who are into women, so there is more incentive not to potentially make things weird with them than there is with some randos who just stowed aboard the train. But note the “we”! There ARE two of her crewmates present, just ones she correctly predicted would not care. We pan over to see that Luffy – embodied asexual garlic bread meme that he is – hasn’t been paying attention at all and is instead preoccupied with trying to stuff as much meat as possible into the pockets of his new cargo shorts. And Zoro, who is now wearing a yellow zip-up shirt that he will never actually zip (as illustrated in the manga panels above) does get a reaction “!” but just says: “Nami, did you change your weapon?” . Because OF COURSE what he noticed is that her climate baton looks different, LOL!
And neither of them was at all bashful about changing in front of her either, nor has Nami ever react to Zoro running around with his rather impressive man-tits out, as he frequently does. Given that one would normally expect that in a manga series with character designs this good-looking, it is quite refreshing that the characters who DO regularly make a big deal out of such things are treated as kind of annoying!

A fun, action packed addiction to the Water Seven saga, that takes place LITERALLY aboard a runaway train; it has everyting fans would want: the requisite action, humor, and unusual villains for the Straw Hats to combat.

Have to say, while I don't MIND Robin at all, she hasn't quite grown on me as quickly as some of the other characters did. (I am glad the focus is primarily on the crew, though, as the last few volumes have had a lot of "outsiders" influencing the plots. Hpopefulyl they'll stay on this track so we get an emotional payoff...)

And we get a look at Frankys backstore, which is interesting enough, I guess?

God I love this Water 7 arc. It's just so good. Anyway, these three volumes bring it to the end as we get to the Enies Lobby arc. I really love the relationships and character moments in this entire saga. I really like the stuff with Robin (though I'm still expecting a backstory sometimes soon). The Usopp stuff is actually very funny and I love that Sanji is getting a lot of attention. Even Zoro and Luffy have some really great moments in this arc.

Regarding the new characters... I love Franky. He's really funny walking around in his underwear and pretending not to be emotional. The Franky family is also great here with the whole "bro" thing.

Overall, this was really good and I'm very excited for what follows. I know that the real emotional part of One Piece is just getting started (and there is also just about 200 hundred chapters until the Marinefold arc). 5 stars are of course not a question here. They're a fact.

Anyway, that's everything that I can say without diving into SPOILERS.

Now... time for the juicy stuff. Aka my specific feelings about certain characters and events.

Let's start at the beginning, shall we?
Aka Franky and Usopp. I love these guys so much. First of all, they're funny as heck. Especially Franky who just shines so far in this arc. Secondly, I love their dynamic. They're bros now, bonding over Usopp leaving the crew (but honestly, Franky's reaction to that was golden). And it's just really wholesome how Franky told Usopp that Going Merry has a personality. It fits well with his backstory.

Speaking about the backstory... I love it. Tom building that ship is so kind of him (especially after everyone wants to kill/imprison him for building a pirate ship). This fits well with the ending part where Tom tells Franky never to disown a ship and confesses to his "crime" of building Gold Roger some awesome ship. I also really like the dynamic between Franky and Iceburg and it's interesting to see how and why Franky became a cyborg. Not to mention... the dynamic between Iceburg and Franky in the present is really wholesome... especially the moment where Iceburg was like I'm glad you're alive or something.

Anyway, let me talk about Robin now. It was really nice how Luffy didn't let her leave, but it was even better when she betrayed them in order for them not to get hurt because of her. Unfortunately, that woman is really stubborn. They probably could've saved her already if it weren't for her mindset that she has to be killed just for existing... the government dude's words, not mine. And I'm still waiting for her backstory which is apparently very sad.

However, it was not just Robin who was the center of attention here. Let me discuss Sanji's role in these 3 volumes. This dude is literally amazing here. He sneaks on the train, saves Usopp and Franky, and then chops those fucking noodles. He truly is the best part of these volumes. He spins those knives like he's fucking Zoro (also I love his reasoning for never fighting with weapons, specifically knives... it fits with his character). Either way, he looked badass as hell and I love how he just acknowledged Sogeking as Usopp even if Usopp was trying to hide it.

Regarding Sogeking though... I absolutely love what Usopp is doing. It's funny because everyone knows who he really is (even fucking Zoro) - except for Luffy and Chopper, who are either extremely stupid or naive - and he still tries to keep the facade on. I don't know why but I just laughed so hard when I saw Zoro's thought bubble upon seeing Sogeking. He was like... wait, that's Usopp and I live for it.

Speaking about Zoro... him and Luffy were actually pretty cool as well. I really liked the scene where they cut through the wave and the one with Zoro cutting the wagon of the train where those evil government dudes were. It looked cool. Oh, and the town scene as well. Luffy breaking the buildings and Zoro cutting the chimney was just really neat. I can't wait to see what they'll do to these weird government dudes in Enies Lobby.

The central theme of this book seemed to be friendship and looking out for others you care about. When Luffy and his crew arrived on the Giant island, where they found Dorry and Brogy, the giants were fighting against each other for a century. However, when other enemies come in and attack Dorry, Brogy is mad that the enemies have ruined their fight. They eventually became friends because they realized how significant their existence was for them. Luff's team also showed bonding and friendship through helping Nami get over her cold. When Nami got sick because of the climate in Grand Line, which is harsh and unexpecting. They headed to another island to find a doctor for her and even had to climb a snowy mountain with lot of danger. This shows real friendship and addresing the message that friends should look for each other when they are suffering or having a hard time.

Enter CP9, a group of anti-pirate assassins on a quest for the superweapon called Pluton. This government sanctioned agency has the Straw Hats in their sight. In a high-stakes chase, Luffy and the gang must survive an epic tidal wave and catch up to a hurtling sea train full of these agents all with the mission of saving their newest member Nico Robin.

But Robin has a dark past and seems to be working for the enemy. Has she switched sides or is there something more going on?

This omnibus greatly expands on the story of the previous volume. I am really enjoying the Water 7 arc; the stakes are high, and the opponents are a real threat.

I also enjoyed the development of Frankie, formally Cutty Flam, notorious wreaker and former shipwright. His backstory is suitably tragic for one of Oda's protagonists, but he seems to gel very well with the Straw Hat crew. I cannot wait to see more of him.

The gang must save Robin for she is on her way to Enies Lobby, the court-room headquarters of the Navy and when a criminal goes through the gates there, they are doomed. The story and arc therefore are very fast paced.

Series: One Piece #37-39
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

So much happens in this volume. The true identities of Cipher Pol 9 agents are revealed, Franky and Iceburg’s history is told, Robin leaves with CP9 and is taken to Ennies Lobby as a prisoner, and the Straw Hats will stop at nothing to save her. Water Seven is a fascinating city and I really loved learning about how they deal with a sinking city. Franky and Iceburg’s backstory was heartbreaking and continues the theme of found family. I forgot a lot about Franky’s history so it was nice to revisit his backstory.

Robin is the main focus of the Water Seven arc. She has left the crew by force and the Straw Hats are determined to get her back. I like how we are slowly learning about Robin and why she has had a bounty on her head since she was a child. This whole story arc just shows how important found family is for Luffy and how far he will go to protect his crew. I am really excited to see how the crew rescues Robin and deals with CP9, especially since their first battle was a bit of a failure.

Okay. I'm starting to get what's so hyped about this arc. I've begun seeing the trends of Oda's writing by now, but this arc has some unique qualities, especially by forcing the characters to have these big fights/falling outs with each other (Usopp breaking up with the crew over the Merry Go, Robin betraying them bc of the CP9 plot).

I have a 6th sense that Robin's backstory is going to be incredibly tragic (that on top of more Sanji backstory stuff later?). I'm predicting black paneled little Robin in the next omnibus for sure. Oh and the Franky backstory was compelling too! Lots of things intertwined about human worth and being proud of your creations. It's the most heart-stirring stuff so far, I think.

While I did think the last few arcs of One Piece, I still liked them well enough. However, this volume, it does change a lot.

First part of this volume is good, presenting us to Water 7, Franky and a whole cast of great new characters. And then... things get insane.

While the pacing is not as neat as Early One Piece, we have a barrage of funny moments, emotional moments, great creative fights, twists and turns. I was reminded exactly what I liked this world so much - how creative and insane it could be at times.

I'm hyped for what's to come.

I feel like the amount of action panels in this volume was a little hard for me to keep up with. I felt like I had to watch the anime to get clarification on what was happening. I think I got lucky that there was more dialogue and flashback forward in the last volume, so the heavy action scenes felt a little hard for me to find my footing in. I'm sure it’s something that I’ll get acclimated to (a very it's me not you kind of situation). But also felt very anticipatory of Ennies Lobby in a way that made me giddy to get back to my girl Nico Robin again.

I really like the unity of the crew—they are a family, and each member complements the others so well! These volumes are packed with adventure, and the storyline is amazing. I enjoy seeing how the characters grow so much while still preserving their essence. I especially liked how Luffy and two others crew put aside their differences to fight a common enemy—something the church could learn from. I never expected to like this manga as much as I do.

I'm just craving togetherness and resolution amongst the gang! The Water Seven setting was fantastic and I'm very excited to see where Enies Lobby takes us. Also, I really didn't like Franky at first but I should've trusted Oda because now I really do. Onto the next one!

What can I say that I haven't said before about this series? It's action packed with daring acts of heroism. It's funny and sometimes very silly. Most of all the main characters have so much heart with strong bonds of friendship. I'm so glad my got me to read this series. I am hooked!

The second omnibus in the Water Seven arc. Interesting character drama, a flashback to Franky's backstory, and fearsome villains ready for the Straw Hats to take on. And the introduction of Sogeking, of course. Terrific stuff. (A-)

This new arc is insanely good. The stakes are huge and they involve Robin the crew member with the most mystery. It is nice to see the group come together for one of their own instead of strangers they meet on the sea. I just know there will be emotional moments ahead.
