Leighann offers a powerful message of hope. Drawing from her own journey of faith, she encourages readers to find stillness amidst life's chaos and learn to hear God's guidance. We always ask God for a lot in our lives. But do we take time to listen?

McCoy reminds us that God is present not just on mountaintops, but also in the "deserts" of our struggles. This insightful book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper connection with God.

“No matter what desert you find yourself in, know this: God is in that desert with you. Experience His presence while you are there.”

Leighann McCoy's book on spiritual warfare challenged me, so I knew her latest release, "A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice," would be a must-read. All I can say is that Leighann is the real McCoy! She speaks not in religious platitudes but from a heart that has wrestled with God through hard things. As I read, Leighann's conversational, friendly manner drew me in. Sometimes I found myself in laughter and sometimes in tears, living through each experience with her.

Yet, this book is not one to skim through quickly. Alongside the personal stories and stories of other women, there's a lot of meaty, biblical teaching. Leighann doesn't mince words, and she's not afraid to tell it like it is.

At one point she says, "I'm almost certain that the reason so many of us have such a hard time hearing God's voice is that we want Him to bless our namby-pamby faith walks. We are not serious enough about honoring His holiness to pursue holiness in our everyday lives. In fact, we're more concerned about what He is or isn't doing to bless us than we are about what we are or are not doing to honor Him."

Ouch! Needless to say, it's a challenging and life-changing book, especially if you take the time to journal through the personal reflection questions at the end of each chapter. You can even take it a step further by reading the book with a friend or a small group and working together through each chapter's discussion questions.

I like how Leighann equates the meantime (the time of waiting between the promise and the fulfillment of the promise) as "mean" time and how that "mean" time is the "main time" we experience spiritual growth.

She says, "If we truly believe that God is intimately acquainted with our deepest desires and that His sovereignty rules the details of our lives, we will rest in our current circumstances no matter what they are."

Leighann also lists some very insightful ways in which we sometimes stay stuck in the mud of disappointment and confusion. She assures us God is with us in the desert and that He cares. Yet, in doing so, she alsodraws attention to the fact that this life, with all it's joys and trials, is really not all about us. Rather, it's about God's ongoing plan and His choice to include us in fulfilling that plan.

"A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice is divided into four parts. Part One, Wrestling With God, deals with lining up our pictures with God's promises and learning to trust Him. In Part Two, Leighann addresses the age old question, "Where Was God When. . . ," drawing upon biblical examples and helping us recognize God's presence in our lives. Part Three, Let God Define Good, shows how God uses "crazy" to teach us new things about ourselves and reveals His power and love. God Will Make a Way is Part Four. It deals with learning to live in expectation of the new thing God is doing.

Any woman desiring to hear God's voice more clearly will find this book a challenging and insightful read. It's guaranteed to help serious readers grow in intimacy with God, teaching them how to press in to Him.

God doesn't always speak the way we would like. Do you imagine if you could hear God speak audibly you would get all of your questions answered? God speaks to us in many different ways. Through the Scriptures. Through our circumstances. Through other people. And many more. He doesn't speak the same way to everyone. He knows just how to speak so we will hear Him, that is, if we are listening and paying attention.

Leighann McCoy knows about struggle. She knows it can be difficult to hear God when struggles are drowning out His voice. But she also knows that God loves you and speaks to you where you are. In "A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice," she uses examples of biblical men and women with a unique perspective. I enjoyed reading her quips and thoughts about how God spoke to Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Hezekiah. Each chapter ends with a treasure chest containing personal reflections and discussion questions that will help you hear what God is saying to you.

I particularly liked McCoy's re-telling of Jacob wrestling with God. She invites us to wrestle with God for the answers we need in our life. We may not always receive what we want, but we will always get what we need.

If you want to know how to hear and respond to God's voice, what to do when God's promises don't line up with your reality and how God uses your struggles to reveal more of His power and love, then McCoy's book will provide the answers you seek.

"A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice" is a great book for group discussion or personal use.

A Woman's Guide to Hearing God's Voice
by Leighann McCoy

Powerful, Encouraging, Challenging

If you read this book, you will find yourself challenged, encouraged and your heart warmed. Leighann McCoy has written “A Woman’s Guide to Hearing God’s Voice” while facing cancer. She is not just facing cancer. She writes while in the middle of chemotherapy treatments. It must be a tremendous challenge to write while going through something so traumatic and life changing. She is an amazing example of someone who is hanging in there with the Lord through thick and thin.

This book walks us through the prayer lives of biblical greats such as Abraham, Jacob and Hezekiah. I have read through the Bible a number of times and am always struck by the continual newness of the text. So, if you think to yourself that I know these stories and how can this book add anything to my knowledge or understanding, chances are you would be wrong. Ms. McCoy has uncovered many nuggets from scriptures. These nuggets alone make the book worth reading. She provides a wealth of insights, testimonies and guidance in hearing the voice of God.

Her definition of “hearing God’s voice” is very clear. Hearing God’s voice can happen in various ways and not necessarily audibly. We can, of course, experience the voice of God by reading the Bible.

The last chapter (15) gives you some assignments to help you on the journey to hear God’s voice.

My description of this book would read “A humble author writing to women everywhere with simple advice on how to listen to the Lord.” This book is a must read for all Christian women. The advice is simple and in no way condemning or negative. I gave this book 5/5 stars. I enjoyed reading the book and learned from its pages.
