A humorous take on the unicorn trend, Unicorn NOT Wanted is funny picture book starring an uninvited unicorn that hijacks the story.
" There are way too many unicorn stories , so this book will be A UNICORN FREE ZONE! And it will be set where you definitely won’t find unicorns... THE WILD WEST!
This is an anti-unicorn, unicorn story, which pokes fun at the never-ending stream of unicorn books , but then becomes what it sets out not to be... thanks to a unicorn intruder!
A unicorn arrives in disguise as a horse on the first pages, but when her hat is removed and her horn exposed, chaos ensues...
It's really silly, but has a positive message of not stereotyping people and being yourself.

We really liked this fun, silly read about a unicorn and a pug. Pugs are amazing, mythical creatures and unicorns are cool too. We appreciated the nod to pugs’ lack of swimming skills because accuracy is important. It kinda was all gag though and didn’t really have a story, would have been nice to see these two actually prove why they are awesome and to know their names. But it was cute overall and our pug gives it three paws out of four. Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for our honest review.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Unicorn NOT Wanted is a different and funny children's picture book about a unicorn and a Pug who want to join in the story, but the narrator doesn't want them to. The narrator wants it to be a cowboy and horse story, so the pair try to disguise themselves to fit in and get caught out each time. I loved this duo and their persistence throughout this funny story. The illustrations were fantastic, and I found the Pug so adorable! I'd love an illustration of this Pug he's just so cute! Children will adore this fun read, and I can see it becoming a favourite at story times in many settings! I'd love to read more from this duo and hope there will be more adventures with them to come.
I give even more stars for this book. It was so incredibly fun and humorous. I'm really looking forward to picking this one up for my two young kids.
This story acknowledges that there is an overload of unicorn stories and this one is different it's a cowboy story. But is it really..... a unicorn and pug sneaks them selves in.
I loved the unicorn and pug in this book. They were incredibly cute and so funny in their dialogue/emotions. This is a super clever story that I think kids will fall in love with.
The illustrations are also fantastic. The unicorn is the perfect amount of derpy looking and the facial expressions are super detailed and expressive.
I would recommend this book to any one work kids preschool age and up.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
I will be posting my review to my Instagram page the.littlest.bookworm and retail sites close or on publication.
My Review: Unicorn NOT Wanted by Fred Blunt was 50% cuteness and 50% comedy magic. From the cover to the content, I was entirely enchanted.
What I Loved:
The illustrations were picture perfect and oh so colorful.
I loved the antics displayed by the unicorn and the pug. They were the perfect duo.
When the playful banter was exchanged between the duo and the narrator, I giggled every time.
The added bonus with this super fun read was...the word play and the use of exclamatory statements! It made the story that much more entertaining.
The underlying message given in this book gets golden hearts and sparkly diamonds from this reader.
My Final Say: Kids will adore this book. Families will have a great time together as they read through this work. Librarians will rush to add this title to their story time hour. Lovers of kid lit will totally appreciate the ADVENTURE, DRAMA, ACTION, and...COWBOYS! (See what I did there? 😁)
Rating: 5/5 Recommend: Yes Audience: Kids ages 5 and up Uses: Family Read Alouds, Library Story Time, Elementary classrooms Cover: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Appreciation is extended to the author, to Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books, and to NetGalley, who provided access to this title in exchange for an honest review. The words I have voluntarily shared are my own.
Author/Illustrator Fred Blunt wants to write a simple book set in the Wild West. He wants to write about cowboys and a sheriff and maybe a deputy. He wants horses and cacti.
But what he gets is a persistent unicorn and a pug.
Blunt keeps telling them that this is a book that does not have a unicorn. But the unicorn and pug will not be stopped. They will do anything it takes to be in the book. Well, almost anything.
They are willing to dress in disguises. They are willing to beg. They are willing to cry. They are willing to do crazy stunts for the story. But when they’re asked to take a small part in the background, well, that’s the one thing they won’t do.
So what will happen to the story, when a unicorn and pug won’t do what the author wants them to? In Unicorn NOT Wanted, we find out the answer to that through colorful illustrations and a funny, sweet story of friendship and compromise. The unicorn and his pug friend are full of life and energy, creativity and persistence. It’s a crazy story that will offer kids humor, color, and giggles.
I really love Unicorn NOT Wanted. I think it’s charming and heart-warming with lots of bright, cheerful colors and funny lines. I think kids will engage with this story and want to hear it over and over.
Egalleys for Unicorn NOT Wanted were provided by Happy Yak (Quarto Group) through Edelweiss, with many thanks.
This was a cute book, but I'm not sure about whether it was truly an enjoyable read. For read aloud with a child or even for a child reading it to themselves. The illustrations are super cute, and it moves quickly, but the humour feels forced and repetitive. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did, and I kept hoping that there would be more of a plot or story than having the 4th wall broken in order to confront a unicorn and pug invading the book. The premise had so much promise, and the start was solid. I'm just not a huge fan of the execution. There will be kids who enjoy this and who ask for it on repeat when it comes time to pick a book, but I'm not sure how many. I feel like this one would be a one and done kind of read aloud. The fact that the book wants to keep unicorns out because they are overdone and then falls prey to what it is trying not to be made me think that Blunt was basically capitalizing on the unicorn lovers (and pug lovers) as well as the anti-unicorn readers in order to cash in rather than really tell a great story.
The artwork does save the book though. Just barely.
Children's books are saturated by unicorn right now! It' ok though - this book is absolutely 100% not about unicorns. Unicorns aren't allowed, or pugs! The author has made sure by setting the story in The Wild West. No unicorns (or pugs) live in The Wild West do they?! Well you'd think not but there's a dynamic duo waiting to scupper the authors plans. Unicorn and pug are desperate to be in the story and they do their very best to disguise themselves. However, the author isn't fooled and tries to remove the pair from the story.
My daughter, who's 6, loved the fact that the author/ narrator's voice was very present in the book and made her feel very included. She also guessed straight away that the unicorn was masquerading as a horse with the horn hidden under the very tall hat. The illustrations are brilliant with lots of fun things to look at. There's also lots of brilliant speech bubbles that encourage children to use a different voice to enact the character. Our favourite page is when unicorn gets really empowered on the rainbow page - 'you go girl!' as Pug says.
A romp of a read, super funny, but tender and empowering too. We loved it.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Happy Yak, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.
Unicorns *Not* Wanted offers a fun response to the current cultural obsession with unicorns. I really enjoyed the playful art style and the silliness of how the unicorn and pug disguised themselves in an effort to try to be included in the book.
However, while I realize that this book isn’t *supposed* to be taken too seriously, I do not think that the inclusion of the unicorn throwing a temper tantrum which then results in the author caving in to her demand to be included in the book is a wise decision. Every children’s book is learning opportunity for our young readers, and presenting this behavior as an effective choice seems irresponsible.
Additionally, I wish that the book had included *some* sort of actual storyline rather than “just ending because they had reached then end of the pages for the book.
Overall, it was cute, but I wish it had a little more substance and one less dramatic temper tantrum.
Shh…this review will definitely NOT have mentions of any unicorns in it!!
Unicorn NOT Wanted written and illustrated by Fred Blunt is a picture book about (NOT) a unicorn and a pug trying to weave themselves into a story about the Wild Wild West where of course there are no unicorns…right?? Well unfortunately for the narrator, the (NOT) unicorn and pug make it their mission to be accepted into the story by any means/disguises necessary.
I think that this would be a perfect book in preschool and prekindergarten classrooms. Younger students will be drawn in with the colorful illustrations and the comical characters of the story.
Thank you to Fred Blunt, NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for offering access to this copy in exchange for my honest and voluntary review!
Five Stars YeeHaw! This was an adorably illustrated children's book. I loved the bright colors, the detail and the derpiness of the Unicorn and pug who DEFINITELY were not supposed to be in this book that ISNT at all about unicorns (or pugs). I liked how the narrator of the story interacted with the characters. The author managed to write a story that made not only my kids laugh, but made me laugh as well. Which tbh is a gift to parents everywhere. My 3 year old was a little confused since it wasn't a typical story but my 5 year old son and 7 year old niece (who is obsessed with Unicorns) found it highly entertaining. This would be great for storytime in any elementary school or library. Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC so that I may share my honest feedback.
I received an electronic ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books through NetGalley. Blunt captures the current unicorn phenomenon in children's publishing. Readers will appreciate the humor as the unicorn and pug crash the story about the Wild West. In fact, they make the whole book about themselves so the story the author wants to tell only gets one page. Younger readers may not understand the underlying satire but will appreciate seeing some of their favorite types of characters participate. Older readers will appreciate the concepts behind the basic story. The illustrations pop and offer another way for readers to connect. Looking forward to sharing this one with classes.
Unicorns are still having their moment, aren’t they? This latest addition is a quick read that is funny for kids with adorable illustrations. It reminded me a little of “Nibbles” which is also adorable. I wish “Unicorn Not Wanted” had a bit more of a story or would have at least peppered some facts into the pages (in the way “Nibbles” does) because while it was fun and silly, it had little substance. I did like how the Unicorn announces that she isn’t made to blend in but to stand out but since the sentiment didn’t apply to her pug friend, it felt a little one note. Overall, a cute silly story that kids will enjoy for the laughs and the pictures.
Thanks to NetGalley and Happy Yak Hardcover for the advanced copy so that I could provide an honest review.
Everyone loves a good unicorn story, right? Apparently, not everyone does. The narrator wants a good old fashioned cowboy story. Well, this non-unicorn intended book turns out to have the opposite effect!
As a 3rd grade teacher I LOVE reading stories to my students and find their viewpoints to be incredibly honest. I was excited to read Unicorn Not Wanted to them. The kids really did love it! They thought it was especially funny when Pug told Unicorn "You go, girl." The humor is just right for 8-9 year olds! My student pointed out what the author was trying to say...it's okay to stand out!
Thank you to NetGalley and Happy Yak Publishing for this advanced read!
Unicorns NOT Wanted by Fred Blunt made my 6-year-old laugh out loud multiple times. It is a fun, silly, and engaging book set in the wild west. The author does not want unicorns in the book and even goes so far as to start the book with this paragraph: “There are way too many unicorn stories, so this book will be a unicorn-free zone. And it will be set where you definitely won’t find unicorns–THE WILD WEST.” Well, you can imagine what happens. Yes, there are unicorns and hijinks and bright, loud music that adds to the whimsy and silliness of the entire book. We loved reading this together and my son has taken it to his room and read it several more times on his own.
One more for the over-laden shelf of meta kids books, where the narrator is trying to give a wild west drama to her/his readers, only for a unicorn and a pug dog to keep turning up and demanding a place. I know the counter-argument to "this has been done countless times before" is the reader who has yet to meet a book like this and finds it the best thing since printing was invented, but this does have to go down as a one-note example doing less than superior equivalents, and the artwork, while exuberant, could never be called pretty.
Who needs another unicorn book? There are already too many of them. Instead, it is time for a nice book about cowboys. But it would be better than ever if there was a unicorn in it. But no. No Unicorns in this book!!! Or are there???????? This was fun. The book is the unicorn, pug, and narrator talking, or arguing back and forth about what the story is or should be. The illustrations are just as fun as the story and there will be kids that want this book read over and over and over again.
The illustrations are energetic and funny, and the unicorn and pug continue to insert themselves in the author's Wild West story in amusing ways. However, there have been so many meta children's stories like this in recent years that this one doesn't especially stand out, except for major unicorn fans and kids who, like the book's narrator, are tired of the unicorn trend.
I received a temporary copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Unicorn NOT Wanted is the best unicorn-free unicorn book. My 7 year old son laughed out loud and demanded we read it again. That is the highest praise a children's book can receive.
Many thanks to Quarto Publishing and NetGalley for the chance to review this book in exchange for an honest review.
Unicorn NOT Wanted is a lively, charming book which recalls the tale of a unicorn and a pug as they continuously insert themselves into the narrator's story about the Wild West. The illustrations are bright and fun, and the humour will surely entertain young readers. Definitely, a book I would recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Quarto Publishing Group for a chance to read this book!
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Unicorn NOT wanted is a playful story that takes lighthearted jab at the current unicorn popularity. The author was determined to keep a unicorn and a pug out of his cowboy story but quickly realizes he doesn't have control after all.
Read this book to my granddaughters. Laughter was heard during the story. When we finished, I asked them how they liked it and they said it was funny and silly. They both liked it a lot. So I think this says it all. The book brought laughs, silliness, and fun to its target audience. Good job! I recommend it.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Unicorn NOT Wanted is the perfect solution for those who are tired of unicorns. It's also very fun to read out loud, although my dog was concerned about the waaaaaahhs.
It would be a fun book to read with kids and splitting parts if they are of reading age.
My unicorn loving 4 year old adored this book - she was in fits of giggles and love the illustrations. As the parent reading, I wish it had a little more to the story, it seemed rather abrupt.. but I would still recommend for all the unicorn and pug loving littles in your life!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Happy Yak and NetGalley for this ARC!
This book started out silly and fun with the unicorn and Pug wanting to be in the story. It takes a turn when the unicorn throws a massive tantrum to get her way and it works. That isn’t the message I want to send my kids. The story line abruptly ends and no story is actually ever told when they run out of pages. This book had good potential but missed the mark.
Unicorn NOT Wanted is one of those adorable books with unexpected characters popping up over and over again. There were several moments I was grinning ear-to-ear even if it was a touch predictable.
I've read other books along the same lines, but each one is an instant hit in my home. If you're looking for a book to make your family laugh this one will do it!
I read this last night to my 7 year old. She said it was "good" which is praise for a little neurodivergent child like herself. I thought it was absolutely adorable. We both loved the illustrations.
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group, Fred Blunt, and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. My daughters liked the pictures and thought the idea was funny. Not much of a story but it was fun.
What an adorable kids book! This is perfect for all children and lovers of unicorns, dogs, and cowboys! I know my 2 boys both love all 3 of those. I can see this being a big hit at school read alouds too.
This is a great book to teach children not to stereotype! It is wild and funny and a hoot to read! Different from a lot of children's books but worthwhile to buy for your child! Thank you to the publisher for this arc via NetGalley. I voluntarily read it and all opinions are my own.
