Oh so 80's! There are part of this book that are just freaking amazing nostalgia, I was a huge fan of Tagami's work and so seeing it again after so long is a lot of fun. The illustrations are as crisp and technically inspired as I remembered, but I had forgotten how similar all his characters look.
Tagami certainly has some creative talent but I feel that a lot of it is squandered on juvenile tits and ass gags, and all of the interesting world building is completely overshadowed by the complete lack of decent character writing. You can probably read this entire series, skipping the character dialogues, and still come out at the end of the book with a more than decent understanding of the "Plot"
So why should one even bother reading this? Because the fight sequences are really cool, and that is sometimes enough to get over the fact that the the floating city looks like a massive dildo, but probably not enough to forgive him for killing off not one, but TWO of the characters, arguably for no good reason, 2 pages before the end of the damn collection. Dude. Really?
This is one of my all-time favorite mangas. I have read some reviewers consider it shallow, but it has such deep political implications that were groundbreaking at the time of publication within the genre that I still consider it a must-read, even if the apocalyptic future theme has been overused in recent times.
Consider this review as relevant to all the volumes listed - Illustrating (literally!) that the cliche of manga 'big eyes' character design is just that - a cliche - GREY starts out as a non-specific post-Collapse 'endless warfare' scenario and morphs into a nihilistic Pilgrim's Progress where the imagery, situations and tech get stranger and stranger. All the while the titular character pretty much stays a complete bastard throughout. I really dug the artwork, although I know folks who HATE how the characters look.
Loved the artwork in this manga (he has his own unique style).the storyline kept me interested, loved the SF scenarios.(years afterwards kept a lookout for more works by tagami-san).
