Wolves of the Gods

Rate this book
A nameless evil stalks the land, preying on all that lives, human and demon alike. Only one man has the power to stem the ravening Safar Timura, the greatest wizard of the age, whose matchless magic once raised Iraj Protarus to the throne of all Esmir--and then, when the king turned tyrant, destroyed him.

Now Safar is done with the deadly intrigues of courts and kings. But when a brutal murder smashes the solitude of his mountain hideaway, Safar must lead his people on a desperate trek to safety--a perilous journey to fabled, far-off Syrapis, guided only by a magical vision and the words of a sorcerer long dead. And close at their heels evil follows like a rapacious Iraj Protarus. For the King of Kings has returned from the dead, hideously transformed--and thirsting for Safar's blood . . .

Base idea for the first book was better. This one also had fantastic settings again and terribly heavy-handed writing again, especially with the "Unholy Three" characters. Will not be seeking out third book (honestly, probably wouldn't have gotten this one either except Half Price happened to have them both in stock at the same time)

“Wolves of the Gods,” the second of the “The Timura Trilogy” is an engrossing continuation of “When the Gods Slept.” It starts where the first book ended without missing a beat. It is seven years later. Magic and battle flourish as Safar Timura, great wizard and hero, is pursued by his former friend, now nemesis, Iraj Protarus.

Unknown to Safar, Iraj made a pact of four with three arch villains just before Safar extracted his vengeance at the end of book 1, and has returned from the dead as a wolf shape-changer. He now wants Safar and all those he loves, his entire village, dead.

Safar leads his people to safety from their native Kyrania in the high mountains toward the Caluz on the coast. He’s following a vision from the master-wizard Lord Asper and hoping to stop the death of the world. To do that, he must get his people to safety, decipher Lord Aspers cryptic poems, and get to the other side of the world to Hadin, to stop a volcanic eruption from poisoning the world.

He’s aided in this quest by several people. His lover in the first book, Leiria, a female soldier, Palimak, a half-demon, half-human child whom Safar has adopted, and Khysmet, the perfect and magical steed Safar rescues. These and a variety of striking secondary characters journey on their way to a new home in fabled Syrapis across the sea.

Iraj, his three shape-changer companions, and Iraj’s army dog Safar’s race to safety. Along with way, Safar meets old friends and allies. The book contains everything a fantasy should: action, demons, sorcery, swordplay, political intrigue, and wonder. While this is book 2 in the series, it can be read first without losing anything.

Still found the book to be good, continuing with the series. While I could still see a few things coming, how they happened was a bit of a twist.
