Born and raised among the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, J. Annas Walker was brought up listening to oral history and traditional storytelling. Her hobby of writing short stories bloomed out of this tradition. With the encouragement of her sisters, husband, an aunt, and a very supportive cousin, she took a chance to turn her hobby into something larger. After acquiring a bachelors of science in civil engineering technology, she worked for a number of years as a transportation designer. Designing road construction projects by day, she continued writing by night. Today, she writes more than she ever did and blends fantasy and paranormal into romance storylines. The fanged, spectral, magical, and furry have become everyday life. J. Annas Walker lives with her husband, two teenage sons, and her cat/office assistant.
A mysterious box, a Halloween party, and a protector named Erica bring vampire Princess Cassandra and policeman David together in a fast moving and riveting tale. As the two go on a search for answers to Erica’s death and the meaning of the box’s contents they fall in love and unknowingly walk right into danger.
Their supposed safe haven is managed by witches and it is there all is revealed as Erica’s killer, an unsuspected source. This is the point where the writer connects all the dots of Cassy’s past very nicely and you don’t really see it coming. But Cassy doesn’t see this neat little twist either until her attacker explains it all as he tries to kill her. Lucky for Cassy David saves her. However, Cassy’s father still wants to kill David for being with her, a princess. Cassy saves David this time by turning him and bonding fully with him.
Scion’s Freedom is a quick and interesting read that drew me in from the start. I found myself eagerly turning the pages to learn what would happen next. I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them in the next book.
“I received Scion’s Freedom from the author in a review swap.” Although Scion’s Freedom is shorter than most stories that I normally read, I truly enjoyed it! Ms. Walker has a unique ability to tell a story and to describe a scene in short, concise sentences. Still, the reader is able to visualize the scene and the characters and isn’t left with the feeling that there is too much missing information. The story begins with the heroine Cassie Daniels, a vampire princess, being talked into attending a boring party by her best friend and protector, Erica. Deciding to make the best of it, Cassie accepts David’s offer to indulge in a little harmless fun, no strings attached. However, as passion consumes her, she loses control and bites David. Once her bloodlust has been sated, she regrets her loss of control and wipes the memory of their encounter from David’s mind. Therefore, when David has to inform Cassie, just a few weeks later, that her friend Erica has been murdered, he has no idea who she is. Cassie remembers everything though and as circumstances force the two of them together, she realizes that the mutual attraction that they’d felt on the night they’d met was really something much deeper. A magical bond, which once completed, cannot be broken. She confesses the truth to David and once he gets past his hurt feelings, he asks Cassie to restore the memory of their first night together. The bond between them continues to grow as they give in to passion, even as an unknown danger is stalking them both. Both Cassie and David are such strong yet vulnerable characters. I really enjoyed that aspect of the story as well as the new take on the supernatural world. I am really looking forward to reading the other books in the series!
*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*
This starts off with a boring Samhain Party, but a very exciting 'after party'. Cassy and David are drawn to each other immediately and after their paths cross again they don't fight fate long. Their pull toward each other is so strong it makes for an interesting read.
Cassy is a princess who has never been alone a night in her life. After her best friend and bodyguard, Erica, is murdered her life takes ninety degree turn into left field. She's very quick to adapt and to use what skills she does have to survive.
After their initial meeting David has an issue with trusting Cassy, but he quickly learns that he can't stay mad long. There is a force beyond his control that's drawing him to her and he has no urge to fight it.
I like how the vampires aren't always strong, how the bonding works, and I thoroughly enjoyed the magical element that makes up all supers. They are aspects I haven't read before and it was nice seeing a different spin on all supernatural creatures.
My Favorite Quote: "We had sex in the parking deck against your car. I lost control and bit you." I loved how she just matter-of-factly told him what had previously transpired between them.
My Favorite Laughable Moment: When Cassy leans back in the window from the roof. David's reaction was hilarious!
One of my favourite authors is Kim Harrison, and right away, Scion's Freedom reminded me a bit of her Hollows series. It takes place after a catastrophic world event destroys a large portion of the human population and allows supernaturals to finally reveal themselves. This book has a lot of the features I like in my books: a strong heroine, vampires, romance, hot sex, and intrigue.
I enjoyed this book a lot! It's not a long read, but it seemed even shorter because the author kept the story interesting enough to keep me going, and when I reached the end, I was like, "It's over? Already?" I'm pretty sure it was Jane Austen who said, "If a book is well written, I always find it too short." I couldn't agree more! And this is usually my number one complaint with books I've enjoyed.
J. Annas Walker has created a well-paced, fascinating take on Vlad the Impaler and his descendants, and I like the way she was able to work little history tidbits throughout the book. If you like paranormal erotic romance, I highly recommend Scion's Freedom!
