This is the end. I have finally finished reading A Clash of Fates and The Echoes Saga, a series comprised of 9 books and 1.6 million words.

“Love is an exceptional power in this world, one that can keep us standing when all else abandons us.”

The year 2022 was filled with me reading this series. I started Rise of the Ranger in January 2022; I finished A Clash of Fates on the last days of the year. And this book review took me more than four weeks to write. On top of difficulty writing it due to spoilers, I had this nagging feeling inside my brain that my super satisfied feeling upon finishing the book did not accurately reflect my overall thoughts. If I were to judge A Clash of Fates based on the beginning and ending alone, I would've given it a 5 stars rating. Easily. I've spent 9 books with these characters, and I loved the endings given to them. But a rating or review of a series or a book is not made of the ending alone; the journey matters, too. Maybe even more. And I had some issues with the storyline in A Clash of Fates. So after weeks of long contemplation, I think it is proper time to lay down my thoughts on A Clash of Fates, the final book in The Echoes Saga series by Philip C. Quaintrell. Note that this review will be shorter than usual. There are so many spoilers to dodge. I mean, even the cover art of A Clash of Fates is, in a way, a spoiler to some readers.

“The life of a mortal is not so bad, Athis began gently. On the contrary, I would argue it is all the more beautiful because of their mortality. Every moment is precious. They experience life like a flash of light; every colour, sound, and taste is more vibrant because of it.”

A Clash of Fates continues from where Last of the Dragorn ended. One of the things I liked about this final book of how seemingly Quaintrell has planned the ending. Quaintrell has mentioned plenty of times that he is a writer that does not plan most of his story. In other words, a pantser. And throughout the series, this can be seen (for better or worse) in the narrative. I have mentioned all the great things about each book in the series many times, and I can vouch that everything you liked about Quaintrell's writing and storytelling style is still evident in the final installment. Before I talk about them again, allow me to get my grievances with A Clash of Fates out of the way first. The themes of leadership, immortality, legacy, and especially redemption are key themes of the series and A Clash of Fates. The way the theme of redemption is executed, however, gave me mixed feelings. In my review of Last of the Dragorn, I mentioned my immense dislike of this particular trope. It is when the main characters constantly insist on forgiving the villain or saying they deserve redemption no matter how many vile actions and deaths they caused. It is absolutely ridiculous to me. Not only it's incoherently selfish toward the victims, it almost feels like a cheap way to prolong the series unnecessarily. The reasonings for this redemption insistence do check out, but this is still one of the main driving forces of the conflict in A Clash of Fates. And I am, unfortunately, not a fan of it.

“You still believe he can be redeemed, that he deserves to be redeemed. A ludicrous notion when we can’t even count the number of bones he stands upon.”

This is not in any way a shot at Quaintrell for writing this trope into the final trilogy. After all, whether the villain deserves to be redeemed or not is a debate among the characters in the series, too. I only wish it did not need to be discussed for two books long. Quaintrell is an incredible battle scenes writer. But this, the repeating divide and conquer plus fetch quests throughout the series, and all the small inconsequential battles written in blow-by-blow details hurt the pacing and length of The Echoes Saga, especially in Last of the Dragorn and A Clash of Fates. Don't get me wrong. This is still a great book and series, and I will talk about the things I love about it soon. However, I cannot help but feel The Echoes Saga would have turned from something to be read merely for fun into something memorably special if it is a six, or at most, seven-book series instead of nine books after the way Last of the Dragorn and A Clash of Fates turned out. The lack of a real main character's death despite so many wars and battles has killed the sense of danger in the conflict since the last book for me.

“Leaders, whatever their role, don’t set an example by being perfect. They set an example by getting back up. My judgment faltered and I made a mistake. In the end, I had to accept that and rise above it, whatever the punishment. And, like you, it helps that I have loyal supporters who believe in me.”

But here's the thing. Despite some of my issues with A Clash of Fates. I have to be honest that I am slightly biased toward the characters here. It is one of the benefits of a long series. I have grown attached to the characters. Just reading about them living their daily lives can actually be something so enriching. One of the best things Quaintrell did with A Clash of Fates is the inclusion of Avandriell as a character. This character added so much depth to another main character's development, and I love reading about their development so much. And as I said, Quaintrell's battle scene is always well-written. The big battles that occurred somewhere in the first half and also the section felt powerful and vivid. The last battle scene pursued a more intimate and emotional confrontation than a massive war scene, and I think it is the right decision for the series. Last but not least, I love the ending. I don't know what it is about epic fantasy novels, but long closing chapters seem rare at the end of a series. I am a fan of seeing what happened to the characters I spent my time with after the final battle. Not just in one or two short chapters, but a few if possible. I feel like it is a proper way to say goodbye to them. Quaintrell did leave out some room for a continuation should he choose to do it someday, but if he didn't, the ending was incredibly satisfying.

“Wearing a crown is never what you expect. You think the whole world is yours and you can do what you like with it, but it’s quite the opposite. Your world is small. Your every step is watched. Your every word written down.

A Clash of Fates is a satisfying end to The Echoes Saga. It is not a mindblowing ending or series, but I think the entire series is just written as pure entertainment for fans of classic epic fantasy. Quaintrell himself mentioned he’s not here to subvert expectations. The ending of the series is predictable, and it is likely The Echoes Saga won’t become a landmark in epic fantasy. But Quaintrell is here to tell a great classic story filled with endearing characters. And he succeeded at it. The Echoes Saga ultimately is a reminder that classic epic fantasy will always be cherished and loved. Business-wise, it is proof that classic fantasy can still sell insanely well despite the delusion of traditional publishers. It is also a consistently great series. Last of the Dragorn aside, I rate every book in the series either 4 or 4.5 stars. As for my favorite book in the series, it will have to be The Knights of Erador, the seventh book in the series. I know there's a prequel trilogy titled The Ranger Archives depicting Asher's early exploits, but at this moment, I don't think I will be reading that trilogy. Not anytime soon, anyway. I am satisfied with what I read here. But I will certainly look forward to reading Quaintrell's future series he's writing right now. Until that series is ready, if you're a fan of classic fantasy with a modern voice and dragon rider epic fantasy, give The Echoes Saga a read.

“Our duty requires more than our ability to swing a sword and breathe fire. Listening is a powerful tool. It can elevate you in the eyes of your allies and grant you knowledge where your enemies are concerned. And, the dragon added, his tone growing more serious, if we are to make judgement on another, should we not seek the counsel of others to ensure we are informed? Anything else would be an abuse of our power.”

A Clash of Fates

9 books, almost 6000 pages later, the tale is told. The entirety of it consistently made me stay up to ridiculous times of the night just to finish the character or story arc (many of which ended in tears) and before long, all 9 were behind me.

Echoes isn't just a series of books.

It's a way of life.

What a Ride!

This series was incredible! I blew through the first 6 books in record time. I couldn't read them fast enough. Then I found myself pacing and sitting on pins and needles for the next two to come out. After reading book 8 it felt like an eternity for book nine to finally hit. It was absolutely worth the wait. All the characters stories were wrapped up beautifully and, as you would expect in a book of this type, a couple of them didn't quite make it to the end but their loss occured in acts of amazing heroism. Beautifully done, Philip C. Quaintrell, beautifully done. I can't wait for the next series, The Ranger Archives, to come out!

The final book continues from the last with war on the horizon. Our heroes must prepare for the final battle of their lives. What happens will change their world as they know it but at what cost. All are heroes but some are legends.

After the amazing conclusion of the previous book, I was delighted to see how swiftly the story resumed it’s momentum. The entire cast of characters is gearing up for the impending conflict which had me on the edge of my seat most of the time. Throughout the story, we see the beginning of new connections between characters and the resolution of lingering situations, all of which infuse the tale with a sense of joy, hope and sadness. It’s also clear to see how deep friendships run which was very heart warming.
The world building in this book is truly exceptional, offering profound insights into the emotional bonds that extend not only among humans but also into the realm of other beings and their connections.

I especially liked the way in which the book skilfully weaved in references to previous books in the series, updating readers on past plot lines and evoking nostalgic moments which I thoroughly enjoyed reliving. The story delves into the conflict early on, introducing an array of intriguing twists involving both main characters and supporting cast. The fighting styles can be brutal and efficient but I imagined our heroes being fluid and graceful almost like a dance of death. I found most chapters gave off a heartfelt and camaraderie filled atmosphere, with characters sharing warm interactions which at times felt a little overused throughout the book.

This series has everything I love about fantasy books magic, assassins, dragons, dwarves, elves and other beings. The author's gift for expressive storytelling is evident throughout and I’m really going to miss reading about the characters adventures which made me very happy. There’s a very satisfactory conclusion to the series and some stories that round things off nicely with the supporting cast. I really loved these books.

Great Ending and Perfect for a New Beginning

In order to enjoy A Clash of Fates as much as I did, you must start at Book 1 Rise of the Ranger. The author says: "It’s taken 6 years, 9 books, and 1.6 million words but I finally did it - I told the story burning a hole in my head." Well, I burned through these pages. If you enjoy sword play, magic, elves, dwarves, dragons, drama, mystery, and intrigue, don't pass over this series. This series has a considerable amount of violence so I would consider the maturity level of young tweens before handing this book over. Without reservation I recommend A Clash of Fates to teens and adult fantasy sword play, magic, and dragon tale fans. I look forward to future releases by this author. HINT: Great summer series for teens who were affected by school closures.

What a joy this was to read and such a fitting way for this epic saga to end. It really had everything and was such a satisfying end to a brilliant series, no easy feat when it had to wrap up nine books! This has cemented the series as one of my favourites of all time and shown how great an author Philip is! Please read this series, you will not be disappointed!

Wow, what a strange ending. Nathaniel is now king of the elves instead of prince or king consort or whatever, which seems weird since he's human and not an elf. ATHES DIES! Just so Inara could be with Vigon. OMG that is so pathetic, I actually got mad at that scene, haha. Oh and Galinor is now the ambassador? That doesn't make sense! He would've been perfect as the army general or a council member to Reyna. She gives him this kickass sword and then wishes he won't ever use it? Like lmao, that is against his nature as a warrior. It just seems counterintuitive that he would be an ambassador.

Oh and Elijah is dead but he died on his own terms. I wish Inara would've just killed him herself, like an act of justice for all the war crimes and monster he became. His "redemption" was just so lame and forced. I don't like Vigon, as always, but in this book, he was worse. How convenient that Athes dies and suddenly we find out that Inara is not immortal and she pops out 2 kids and everything is good? LOL At least that's better than her marrying Vigon and then being the ruler for all time, which is why they were fighting Elijah all along. Now that would've been a scary plot twist!

Random but did none of the dragons notice that magic was fading? I mean, you would think that would concern them enough to help out in the war effort! It's like they fall off the face of the planet and we never hear from them again! So ridiculous!

I love Gideon and Irlago the most. I wish Irlago spoke more in this book but I'm glad that he seemed at peace at the end with the fact that they changed their bond. I wonder if they could figure out how to alter their bond back to how it originally was. Without the influence I guess but to become bonded in soul again. I still feel that the bond with dragons is supposed to be something sacred and for it to be just changed by walking through a cave makes it almost worthless. Of course Athes needed to die so that he wouldn't be the perpetual third wheel for Inara and Vigon, although he was throughout the book already. 🙄 Out of all the book romances, that one just pissed me off so much because it seems so forced! It makes Athes an inconvenience and something to be literally killed off so that Inara and Vigon get together. And then for their son to be named Athes? WTF.

Oh and speaking of Athes, he fell in love with Gywinnifer (Audible so idk how to spell the names) but she has to go back to Erador and rule as queen. What is it with everyone falling in love in the same circle? Do these people not meet other people? I can already see it: Gywinnifer and Athes are going to marry and they will both rule places just like Atelan did thousands of years ago. I would be completely shocked if they both meet other people and just move on with their lives. The only "outsider" was Galinor and Edwyn. She was a random elf living in a forest serving her lady and then slowly falls in love with Galinor. Nathaniel and Reyna, Asher and Faylen (although she did end up with someone else), and Inara and Vigon. Nemir and Edwyn are the outsiders but we don't hear from their perspective at all. Edwyn has a slightly bigger presence in the book so there's that but still, it is unbelievable that these people, royals and all, somehow don't have other friends and meet other people. There can be room for minor characters too, just a thought.

Overall, I was deeply unimpressed at the way the series ended. I'm glad they all found peace but come on, not a single major character died except for Athes and that's because he was a third wheel. UGH! The battle scenes were awesome and the plot moved at a quick pace so a star for that but otherwise, this was just a bad ending. I'm going to try and pretend I never read this for a different ending in my mind, lol.

Galinor and Edwyn go to Ada. He becomes the army general because the elves realize that they can be peaceful but they also need to protect themselves so they need a trained standing army. Edwyn is a captain or advisor since she is good at strategy and a badass warrior. Inara, Athes, Gideon, and Irlago research and find a way to resume their bond, at least physically, without the influence of their dragons. Truly something between a dragorn and dragon rider. Vigon realizes that he is just living in the past and needs to move on so he marries a really smart and fearless soldier and she becomes queen. The greycoats are re-established by Nathaniel and Inara helps him train them, a father-daughter thing. Inara is still the guardian of the realm and Gideon is as well but for Erador. They meet up and switch every so often just for fun. Erador became a democracy so even though they don't have magic, they have something else. Reyna and Nathaniel go to Ada and he is the king consort so not really king in his own right since he's just married to Reyna. Asher and Evandriel are bonded already and they are also guardians moving around and helping wherever they're needed.

Nothing needs to be changed with Doren. He'll find someone to love and he will be a great king! Adelandra is found alive but she resigns from the throne so she can retire and chill. She goes looking for her husband and they fall in love again, or not, doesn't matter. She'll find her way to Draconan so she can protect the dragon eggs and keep them safe. Inara kills Elijah with the blade instead of him jumping off the platform. Athes doesn't need to die so he doesn't. The dragons and other riders felt the lack of magic and realize as well that they need to be somewhat involved in what goes on in the world. They're not dragorn but they will help when needed to honor the huge sacrifice that the drakes made for them. Boom! That's my ending and I'm sticking with it it!

Wow. Ok so that series is awesome. I’m completely lost for words which is why this review has taken some time. I started book 1 after hearing it recommended by a Booktuber I’m obsessed with named Petrik Leo. He recommends the most badass books. Anyways after reading Book 1 (Rise of the Ranger), I was hooked bad. I then read each book one after the other and it was such a beautiful experience. This series has it all. From elves, dwarves, dragons, wizards, orcs, werewolves, merfolk etc. And it’s done sooooo well. I love epic fantasy and this was the best I’ve ever found. I highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys fantasy. I’m immediately reading the next series (also in the world of Verda) called A time of Dragons.

If anyone has any questions about this series please hit me up!

A triumphant end to The Echoes Saga

No spoilers here but suffice to say that every word is a treat. The conclusion to The Echoes Saga will make you angry and frustrated, it will make you laugh and it will make you cry real tears of sadness. I cried....actual tears...and that's no mean feat from the author as I generally have the emotional capacity of a dead twig.
But most of all, this book will leave you satisfied. No silly ambiguous endings here, just a full, and very welcome, complete ending...with some meat left on the bone for future stories set in this world.
The characters are your friends, you root for them, you care about them, you laugh and you cry with them. And, for me, that's the mark of a great writer.
Treat yourself and buy this book.
Thanks for the story Mr, Quaintrell. I enjoyed every second.

Absolutely fantastic from the get go..
The only way this could’ve been better (for me) would’ve been that the whole series had been written before I began (preferably on a months holiday on the beach) so if that’s in your plan then I suggest you download it. Get yourselves swept away to a story which is superbly written, twist and turns with an epic ending.
Great characters, awesome story. Will definitely re-read soon.

This is high fantasy at its finest. Well written combat and dialogue and a highly imaginative created world. I have read all nine of the books and I have enjoyed them. For me it was a little too predictive and convenient when dealing with character conflicts and choices which gives it a somewhat of a young adult feel to it. This is not a bad thing, just know that some decisions and conflicts introduced has obvious conclusions. A great ending to a wonderful story.

Best series ever!

I love the final book. I could not put it down! It's been a great read from the first book to the last. I really am sad that I will not be able to continue on with the series but I am happy to have seen the end. I only hope they turn this into an HBO series so I can see it in live action!

A Clash of Fates is the kind of finale that lingers long after you’ve turned the final page. This series leaves you breathless, shaken, and filled with awe and ache. It’s a book full of conflict, chaos, and love. The kind that holds fast even when the world is falling apart.

Philip C. Quaintrell has built something truly special across these 9 books. And gods, is it emotional. I felt every moment of doubt, every hard choice, every glimmer of impossible hope. There’s a sense that all these characters—flawed, resilient, beautiful in their brokenness—have been shaped by something bigger than themselves. And yet, the story never loses sight of their humanity. Their grief. Their love.

The writing is as cinematic and vivid as ever, filled with breathtaking imagery and emotional resonance. Quaintrell did a phenomenal job balancing high fantasy stakes with deeply personal arcs. You can feel his love for these characters in every word.

And while A Clash of Fates closes many doors, it leaves just enough ajar to suggest more stories still stirring in the dark. There are echoes that haven’t yet faded. I wouldn’t be surprised—nor would I complain—if one day we return to this world. There’s something about it that refuses to let go.

If you’ve come this far in the saga, prepare your heart. This final chapter whispers of what might still be waiting ahead. 😭🥹🙏🏼

⭐️I HIGHLY recommend you try and commit to this journey~ 🥰🥹❤️

So much emotion, and I'm so sad its over, but so happy it happened. What. A. Journey. 3 prequel books going into a 9 book saga, and its done. And what a way to stick the landing. All the conclusions, all the tie ins, none of it felt forced, and as someone who really grew to love all of these characters, it was beautiful to see how their stories close out.

Asher, Nathaniel, Reyna, Inara, Vighon, Alijah, Doran Heavybelly, Russell the werewolf, Gideon Thorn, Illargo, Athis, Tauren Salimson, I could literally read whole series of books about each one of them.

The baddies of this saga, from Valanis, to the Crow, to the Orc King, to the final baddie that I won't mention in case of spoilers, they were so freaking good.

Not an exaggeration, probably one of my favorite fantasy series of all time, which is saying a lot since there's a lot I love. Huge round of applause, Mr. Quaintrell! Bravo!!!

HBO or Amazon, make this a tv series already!

This is how you end an already terrific series.
Quaintrell pulls you through all the feelings: anger, frustration, revenge, hopelessness to sadness, grief, satisfaction, and elation.
There isn’t a happy ending for everyone. So not all events were predictable. All the characters’ arcs come together seamlessly in this book. Although the second generation of people in the second trilogy took me a while to accept and enjoy, I was totally on board with everyone by the third trilogy.
The pacing of the story was perfect. So many pieces were moving on the chessboard but smoothly. I had no trouble keeping things straight in my head. Battles especially between dragons was just amazing. I was right there watching it all.
I will miss these characters and dragons. But as Athis says: “I await you in the next life… where the sky is endless… and the dawn is everlasting….
Now the the prequel series about Asher!

The Big “Complete”

I stumbled across this saga right before the 3rd book was released. I devoured them as fast as possible (I even finished one book in 1.5 days) and then I agonized over each release. Waiting.

The story would infiltrate my dreams and I would find myself daydreaming, completely lost in each storyline.

Sometimes I did find the writing to be a little too detailed... I will never forget what colour Reynas eyes are, but I didn’t care.

After each book ended I would try and find something to to quench my book thirst but nothing would do.

I read them all on my kindle, and just purchased the first 3 books in hard copy.

They are books I know I will return to over and over again - if just to feel the flight of a dragon or the night elixir course through my body... or maybe even the friendship between two rangers, a Northman and a Half Elf.

this was the perfect ending for a great series :) I'm not sure I want to read the prequel series but I will wait and see maybe next year

Great series

I hate to see “Echos Saga” end. Or maybe it’s a beginning. I have enjoyed this series and watching all the characters grow and come together. Hopefully, this author will decide to extend some of the main characters stories into their own stories and series. I would like to hear more of Erador and all the young queens, prince and princesses stories, while the Echos characters continue to expand. I certainly recommend.

A very satisfying ending to the series, and I still want to spend more time with the characters.

Epic end to an epic series!!!!

I absolutely loved this book!!! It wrapped the entire series up so well but left it open and me wanting more. I won’t go into details but I honestly can’t remember the last time that I cried tears of joy and sadness all in one book. Even hours after finishing it, I still get saddened by some of the parts in the book.
If you’ve made it this far into the series, then you already how amazing it is and I can happily tell you that this book does not disappoint in any way shape or form.

Epic!

There are very few fantasy books that I would truly call fantasy. Romance ends up taking a front seat, make the novels lose all the epic qualities of a true epic fantasy novel. This series did not disappoint in the least. I lost myself to these characters and their world for about a month, not wanting it to end, yet so glad I didn't have to wait for the next book. I will be a fan for life!

Great book

I have read all 9 books and like the others this book kept me entertained and not wanting to put the book down. I have become familiar with the character, dragons, elves, dwarves and other monsters through these books and as much as I loved this adventure it is sad to know this is the last. Great series and final book.

Move Over Sanderson.

I can not say enough about this series! Spot on! I have always been a huge Sanderson fan, but after coming across Quaintrell, Sanderson is now going to have to share the spot light. Can not say enough about this series and the way they all tie in together. Can not wait to jump into the Ranger Archives!

Well done Philip!!!!

The greatest saga ever written

The Echoes Saga was incredible and by far the best saga slash series I’ve ever read. It’s definitely a must read for any fan of fantasy series I couldn’t put it down.
